iPhone SE: detailed specifications and everything you need to know. A detailed review and testing of the Apple iPhone SE Smartphones have one or more front cameras of various designs - a pop-up camera, a PTZ camera, a cutout or hole in the display, a camera under the di
Apple developers did not come up with new design for iPhone 5 SE. Instead they reused appearance fifth model, equipping it with new internal elements. This is a strange step that could be observed for the first time.
One way to interpret this is to suggest that Apple is taking the easy way out and is simply reworking an existing design to produce a cheap smartphone. Another possible explanation is that they are reviving the iconic design of the iPhone 5/5s in an attempt to cater to a group of users who not only want a budget phone but also prefer a smaller form factor. After all, a third of Apple users are still using older 4-inch smartphones.
What immediately attracts attention?
According to reviews of the iPhone 5 SE, the most important feature of the device is the rethinking of the specifications. The iPhone SE features the 4-inch Retina display introduced in the iPhone 5s with a first-generation touch sensor. The device has an identical body, but inside it is equipped with the new Apple A9 chip with 2 GB of RAM, a 12-megapixel main camera and a slightly larger battery.
The functionality limitations of Apple devices haven't changed in years, so they shouldn't surprise anyone - you can't have expandable storage, fast or wireless charging, FM radio, replaceable batteries, and more. The new 3D Touch technology is also missing for obvious reasons, although you can still use Live Photos. Reviews about the iPhone 5 SE usually do not attribute the above to the disadvantages of the device.
Apple iPhone SE review
As you'd expect, the iPhone 5 SE comes in a fairly compact box filled with a Lightning cable, an A/C 1A plug, and a well-packed pair of headphones.
The dimensions of the device are 123.8 x 58.6 x 7.6 mm, which is fully consistent with the size of the iPhone 5s. The gadget weighs 113 grams. Compared to the new 4.7-inch iPhone 6s, the SE model is 1.5cm shorter and 1cm narrower.
Design and build quality
Keeping the old design means having a first generation Touch ID and an older FaceTime camera (1.2 MP). In addition, there is an issue with bezels that make the phone look dated by today's standards. This is repeatedly mentioned by the reviews of the owners of the iPhone 5 SE.
There's one more thing worth mentioning: the iPhone 6 comes with a water-resistant design that allows it to avoid damage when submerged in water for up to 40 minutes. In contrast, the iPhone SE in such a situation will instantly "die", which is confirmed by many online videos.
The front of the iPhone 5 SE is covered in ion-strengthened glass (that's the usual version of Gorilla Glass protection) with an oleophobic coating to read fingerprints. The body frame is metal, like most of back side.
The front of the SE is mostly occupied by a 4-inch Retina display. On top, you can find a headphone slot, a FaceTime camera, and a couple of sensors. At the bottom is the Home/Touch ID button with a steel ring. The retractable nano-SIM slot is located on the right. On the left side are the volume keys.
At the top of the iPhone 5 SE is the power/lock key, also made of metal. The audio jack, speaker grille, main microphone (also behind the grille) and charger port are on the bottom.
The back side of the SE is familiar to all fans of this brand of smartphones. As in past models, there is a 12-megapixel camera, a dual LED flash with a second microphone and, of course, the Apple logo. The camera functionality is the same as on the iPhone 6, with the ability to record 4K video. This is happily noted by many reviews of iPhone 5 SE users.
Screen
There are many opinions that have been expressed by users about the old 4-inch Retina display. Skeptics will incessantly mention the super-small screen, large bezels, low resolution, while the opposite camp of consumers praise the multitude of colors and clarity in sunlight, as well as high brightness. Thus, customer reviews of the iPhone 5 SE regarding the screen vary greatly.
The display of the device uses a 4-inch IPS panel measuring 640 x 1136 pixels, offering a density of 326ppi - classic Retina specifications. The resulting contrast of 1:804 is not that remarkable, mainly due to the low black levels. By comparison, the 4.7" screen on the iPhone 6s has the same 326ppi, but a less bright screen with higher contrast.
In terms of color rendering, the iPhone 5 SE scores well with average DeltaE 2.3, which means an almost fully calibrated screen. The maximum deviation - 5.2 - is in whites that look a bit bluish, but it's not noticeable without an external breakpoint.
Battery Life
The battery inside the iPhone 5 SE is slightly larger than previous models at 1,624 mAh. Apple's iOS 9 platform introduced a low power mode that you'll be prompted to turn on when the battery drops below 20%.
According to reviews of the iPhone 5 SE, the battery performs very well in all tests: it can handle about 12 hours of 3G calls, 13 hours of web browsing, or 14 hours of video playback on a single charge.
Connection
iPhone 5 SE comes with a lot of wireless features. The smartphone supports fast LTE signal (up to 150 Mbps) with wide band coverage. Regular 2G and 3G connections are also reliably covered by the many supported network bands.
The device supports all existing Wi-Fi a/b/g /n/ac standards. AirPlay is the only way to accurately display your screen content on your HDTV, but you need to have an Apple TV set-top box to do this.
Some apps will let you cast screen content through Chromecast or Smart HDTV, but compatibility may vary. Optional local connectivity includes Bluetooth 4.2 LE. There is also support for NFC, but its functionality is limited to Apple Pay only.
The iPhone 5 SE uses the proprietary Lightning connector for wired data transfer and charging. The device does not have USB On-the-go or USB host support, but you can pair a Bluetooth keyboard with your phone if you need such a peripheral.
To transfer just about any content, you'll depend on syncing your smartphone with Apple's iTunes software on your computer. Reviews about the iPhone 5 SE 32 also differ in this part. A nice feature is that the device can connect wirelessly via Wi-Fi. The downside is that the paradigm of syncing content between computer and phone is pretty old - the same as the first iPod. It requires you to first add your content to your iTunes library.
Apple iOS 9.3
The controversial iPhone 5 SE runs preloaded with iOS 9.3, although a firmware update to 9.3.1 is already available. The new phone does not have 3D Touch hardware, so some core features are missing from the OS. However, this functionality is still nothing more than a publicity stunt without any real value to the user. Reviews about the characteristics of the iPhone 5 SE do not indicate this circumstance as a drawback.
Apple iOS 9.3 introduced a new night view and an enhanced note-taking app, while iOS 9 only introduced a new news app and support for public transport timetables with maps. Mail and Messages got an update and there's a new system font. The Siri assistant has become more extensible, and the Spotlight Search service has expanded its range.
Screen interface
As usual, all applications are on the desktop, you can group them into folders. The now familiar docking station is present, which can accept up to four shortcuts. System icons, color scheme and transparency - everything looks the same as in iOS 8. The photo of the iPhone 5 SE, reviews of which are discussed in this article, allows you to verify the above.
The lock screen hasn't changed either - it has a camera shortcut and shows all your notifications.
The Control Center, which is pulled out from the bottom of the screen, retains the same layout of toggles, shortcuts, and media controls. Notification Center launches from the top and has the same tabs as before - "Today" and "Notifications". There are no new widgets or notification options in this version.
New task manager
Spotlight search has been improved since iOS 9. You can access it by scrolling down from anywhere on your desktop or go to the leftmost window. According to reviews of the iPhone 5 SE 32 GB, this service has been upgraded even more and can now perform simple calculations and conversions. It also supports sports score search and weather forecast information. And finally, you get shortcuts to make a call or send a message to any of the contact results in Spotlight search.
Voice Assistant
Siri has also been improved. In addition to all the cool stuff the smart assistant could do, it can now view your photos and videos based on dates, locations, and album names. It supports custom reminders from requests you've made in Safari, Mail, Notes, and Messages, and has also received support for public transport navigation.
IOS 9 brings new active help available system-wide, more or less dependent on Apple on Google Now. DND mode has been available on iOS for a long time, but now there is a new feature provided by iOS 9.3 called Night Shift. It changes the display temperature at night to reduce eye strain. Reviews about the iPhone 5 SE mark this as a positive feature of the device.
Hardware power
The iPhone SE has an outdated look, but its hardware has been updated. It is equipped with the latest Apple A9 chipset, which is equipped with a 1.84GHz dual-core Twister processor, PowerVR GT7600 six-core graphics, and 2GB RAM. According to user feedback, the A9, combined with the lower resolution (than the iPhone 6), makes the device very powerful. Separately, it is worth noting the graphics performance. SE uses a six-core PowerVR GT7600 GPU, which allows you to run even high-capacity games on the screen.
Telephony and messaging
The Phone app hasn't changed much - it doesn't support smart dialing, but offers integration from social networks. The blacklist is also available for those who need this feature. FaceTime is naturally available for all compatible iOS devices, allowing the user to make free voice and video calls to any other device that supports the service.
Apple also offers Wi-Fi calling on this device. If both subscribers support this service and it is turned on, the call will not be made via the cellular network, but the connection will be made via the Internet. This improves sound quality and also saves money.
The same goes for iMessage - after enabling it, the user can send free text and multimedia content, including voice messages, to any other Apple gadget.
- The display is a rectangle with rounded corners. The diagonal of this rectangle, excluding rounds, is 5.85 inches (for iPhone 11 Pro, iPhone XS and iPhone X), 6.46 inches (for iPhone 11 Pro Max and iPhone XS Max) or 6.06 inches (for iPhone 11 and iPhone XR). The actual viewing area is smaller.
- All stated battery specifications are subject to network settings and other factors; Actual hours may not match those shown. The battery has a limited number of charge cycles. Any announcement by Apple causes a storm of discussion, from very positive to sharply negative. And the release of the iPhone SE completely caused a resonance on the network: someone predicted huge sales for him and rejoiced at the appearance of an updated compact smartphone, while someone, on the contrary, was perplexed how they dared to release such an old model with a new filling and to whom it could even be need? The truth traditionally lies between two extremes, and now we go directly to the review itself.

The smartphone comes in a compact box traditional for Apple, the equipment is standard, except for the headset that has changed over the years. Separately, I would like to note that unpacking Apple equipment is always an aesthetic pleasure: everything is neatly folded, there are no stupid blisters, each part of the kit is easily removed and immediately ready for use.
Appearance, materials, controls, assembly
The design of the iPhone SE has not changed much compared to the 5s, except that an additional pink color has appeared. She was the one I tested. No matter what anyone says, but Apple has no problems with the design of their smartphones, so all their devices since the iPhone 4 look really cool.
Pleasantly hand-cooling aluminum, glass inserts on the sides, glass on the front side, neat power and volume buttons. The "five" had an excellent design, and I do not consider it a minus to keep it for the SE version. Think about how many years Apple has been using the good looks of their MacBooks.
Let's briefly go over the control elements, since they have not changed in comparison with the original five.
Front side. Upper part - earpiece mesh, front camera, light and proximity sensors
Under the screen - a fingerprint scanner
Left end. Volume buttons and switch for silent mode
Upper end. Power button
Bottom end. Speaker, 3.5mm headphone jack and Lightning connector
Tray for nanoSIM
Several important clarifications. Nowhere is it exactly indicated which generation of Touch ID is used in the iPhone SE, as far as I know, it is slower than in 6s / 6s Plus, but much faster than in my iPhone 6, such a paradox. The speaker has excellent sound quality and volume margin, the smartphone can be perfectly used as a portable speaker. And the edges in the iPhone SE have become matte, they are more resistant to scratches, let me remind you that in the original "fives" this element was glossy. And a little fact about the assembly: I was the owner of the iPhone 5s, the power button dangled a little, unfortunately, the SE also inherited this problem.
Dimensions
The dimensions of the new iPhone SE are perhaps one of the most interesting parts to discuss. To be honest, I have already lost the habit of such compact smartphones, I don’t even remember when I tested something of similar size (probably it was the iPhone 5s). You can safely write about this smartphone that it is convenient to use it with one hand, and it is also much lighter than most of the five-inch models we are used to.
Compared to iPhone 6
Screen
Let's start with the positives. The display has excellent viewing angles, brightness range and excellent behavior in the sun. I also really like how the automatic brightness control works, however, this is the advantage of all iPhones. Of course, there are better screens, but the display capabilities of the iPhone SE will be enough for most users.
Of the shortcomings, I note some yellowness of the screen. If you compare it directly with the iPhone 6, you can see that the SE is noticeably yellow, but if there is no example for comparison, then you won’t even pay attention to it.
Is it convenient to use a device with a 4-inch screen in 2016? On the one hand, Apple did everything to improve the interaction of the owner with the display: the icons are arranged as tightly as possible, the scale of the application interface is slightly reduced compared to Android to fit more information, etc. And with SE, you can easily type text with one hand.
But the shortcomings with its size still could not be avoided, they are especially noticeable when reading articles through a browser (without a separate mode, you can only read sites in landscape orientation) and when typing. One of the reasons why I didn't like the iPhone 5s is that the display is too small, and when typing with two hands (which is more convenient for me), your thumbs almost intertwine into a tight knot.
Operating system
The device is running iOS 9.3 and is constantly updated on latest versions ON. You can find a detailed review of iOS 9 at the link below.
I would like to note that lately iOS has been working worse on devices older than a year (take my own iPhone 6, for example), but there were no problems with speed and stability on the new iPhone SE.
Performance
And although the iPhone SE looks like a complete copy of the 5s on the outside, inside it has the same chipset as the latest iPhone 6s and the same 2 GB of RAM. And this, of course, significantly affects performance. In addition to being significantly faster than 5s in the interface, the SE is much better at handling any, even the most productive games. However, when working with the latest SE, it gets pretty hot, so you won’t be able to play for a long time, however, the small display does not have this.
Offline work
One of my first iPhones was the same iPhone 5s whose successor is the SE. Exactly two things annoyed me about it: a small screen, due to which I periodically missed the letters and wrote with typos, and a short battery life, due to which the smartphone was discharged by the middle of the day.
In the case of the SE, I was pleasantly surprised by its battery life, in my opinion, it lasts even longer than the iPhone 6, a difference of 10%. You can safely count on three hours of screen activity at maximum brightness with a mobile connection and sync enabled.
Camera
From the iPhone 6s, the smartphone inherited not only performance, but also the same camera, which, I can not help but notice, does not stick out of the case! The image quality is comparable to the same 6s, this is a very good level, although inferior to the top-end Galaxy S7 or LG G4, but for most users, the camera's capabilities are enough for the eyes. There are iPhone cameras and another nice feature is their simplicity. You don't have to try hard to get a good shot, you just point the camera, hit "take" and you're done. But the front camera remains 1.2 MP, which for some will be a disadvantage. But Retina Flash is supported when the screen acts as a flash. Below are examples of photos and videos taken on the iPhone SE and the same shots on the regular iPhone 6 for comparison.
iPhone 6 | iPhone SE |
Wireless interfaces
The interfaces in the smartphone are a complete gentleman's set, all new Wi-Fi standards and most LTE “bands” are supported, so even when roaming you can use fast Internet.
Conclusion
There are no complaints about the quality of speech transmission, you and your interlocutor hear each other perfectly, no interference if the network catches steadily.
In retail, for the iPhone SE 16 GB they ask for 38,000 rubles, the 64 GB version will cost you 48,000 rubles. For this money, you get an external copy of the iPhone 5s, but with the insides of the iPhone 6s. In fact, the very option that some users and a number of our commentators dream of. If you are also one of them, then I can safely recommend you the iPhone SE for purchase.
I remember very well how uncomfortable it was for me to use the iPhone 5s because of the small diagonal of the screen, however, I was surprised to find that I got used to the SE much faster. Honestly, I did not feel much discomfort when using this small smartphone. But after returning to the iPhone 6, I realized that I had no particular desire to use a device with a four-inch display in 2016, everything was too small, and I never typed text with one hand.
And now a question for you, dear readers: would you buy an iPhone SE? And to be more honest, I’ll clarify: what if a similar device came out on Android, for example, a four-inch Galaxy S7 Mini stuffed with a full-fledged flagship or a small compact Nexus/Xiaomi/Meizu?
Congratulations to all lovers of small screens, 4-inch iPhones! On March 21, 2016, Apple updated its line of 4-inch iPhones with the new iPhone SE. This means we have a choice. We may not buy big iPhones with 4.7″ or 5.5″ screens just because they are recent models. If you don’t like a big screen and the good old “five” has always suited you, then today you can buy a new, fresh 4-inch iPhone SE with modern and up-to-date hardware inside.
The most important thing is that people who went with the iPhone 5 have already encountered problems related to the software. For example, the “night mode” function from iOS 9.3 is no longer supported by the “five” and, apparently, it is not a fact that the iPhone 5 will support all functions. Those. Apple is gradually phasing out support for the 5, and by purchasing the iPhone SE we get the most up-to-date device with the latest processor, which will support all the functions, all the new ones. iOS versions the next 5 years. Yes, we will even sell or ditch it earlier :)
Colors and body
The first thing you immediately want to pay attention to is the presence of a new color in the Apple iPhone line and, also, in the line of 4-inch iPhones - Rose Gold (Rose Gold). At one time, Apple introduced this color in and now decided to equip the next version of the iPhone. The new color is popular and already three devices from all Apple products have it. I'm really sure that soon we will wait and.
The shape of the iPhone SE identically repeats the shape of the iPhone 5S, so all cases from your fives will roll. They just took any of our 4-inch iPhones and stuffed modern, up-to-date hardware into it. Updated, in other words. Well, rightly so, because the iPhone 5S has a rather beautiful, convenient, comfortable, generally optimal shape and all it lacks is the relevance of the filling.

What is the processor in the iPhone SE
The iPhone SE processor is the current A9 chip, which is currently in the iPhone 6S. Also, the A9 chip has an M9 coprocessor that provides contactless access to Siri - now you can just say “Hi Siri” and it will be activated. No more holding down the home button.
How much RAM is in iPhone SE
Luckily, the iPhone SE has 2GB of RAM, just like the iPhone 6S. So no lags. The phone works quickly and without brakes. he definitely won't. Even faster than the iPhone 5S and even slightly better than the last 6S. Although at the presentation, Apple showed that the new iPhone SE is on par with the iPhone 6S in terms of performance and exceeds the speed and power of the iPhone 5S by 2 times. And the graphics chip is 3 times faster than the iPhone 5S.
How much memory is in the iPhone SE
The iPhone SE received 16 GB and 64 GB of its own memory. Yes, only two models will be available. However, already this topic with 16 GB infuriates. In 2016, putting so much, and even with the support of shooting 4K video, is not interesting. Well, it is clear that this is a marketing ploy and that they follow the concept of the iPhone 6S. Maybe everything will change with the release.
What OS does the iPhone SE run on?
The iPhone SE ships with iOS 9.3 on board. And, accordingly, it will support iOS 10 and subsequent new ones, up to iOS 13.

That's it for the iPhone SE review. In general, a good device. Especially for those who don't like big displays on phones. Worthy replacement for iPhone 5, iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C. And the price is very pleased. This is the most affordable iPhone in the world today. Modern filling, in the form of an awesome camera, like in the iPhone 6S, a powerful and fast processor, a beautiful rose gold color, makes this iPhone the best among 4-inch iPhones, modern and relevant.
