Choosing a hot water fan heater and its principle of operation
In the modern world, the market offers a wide range of various heating and climate devices, with which you can control and adjust the temperature in the premises. Unfortunately, most of these systems are designed for a small area, as they have a significant consumption of fuel or energy.
Therefore, for industrial premises, which often also need to maintain certain climatic conditions, a water fan heater has been created.
The water heating system enjoys low efficiency in relation to the time spent on heating the room. Hot water radiators take a long time to heat the air to a certain temperature. In addition, this system does not form local zones of increased heating, which are often needed by some enterprises, such as service stations or car washes, where quick drying of some parts is necessary. In connection with such circumstances, it is recommended to use a water heater, which includes two heating systems at once - water and air.
Hot water heater
How it works?
A fan heater with a water heat source creates air currents with a large fan, providing a high return of thermal energy. The role of the heating source in the fan heater is played by hot water, which comes from central heating systems. And to distribute heat from the radiator, an installed electric fan is used, which pumps warm air into the room.
More clearly, the operation of this system can be imagined as follows: an ordinary, familiar to most, water heating battery, placed in a special box and equipped with an efficient fan. Through the openings in the front panel, hot air enters the room. Thus, all the received heat is spent as much as possible and purposefully.
In addition to economic benefits, such industrial water fan heaters are also convenient because their installation and maintenance do not require additional knowledge or the involvement of special skilled craftsmen. The principle of operation is clear and accessible even to non-specialists.
What are the advantages and what are the specifics?
Unlike most of the most common methods of space heating, heating with a fan heater has a whole list of positive qualities:
Wall-mounted water heater
- Efficiency of consumption of received heat . The heat coming from the battery does not rise up to the ceiling and is not spent on heating the walls, as in a conventional heating system, but immediately warms up the lower layers of the air in the room. Therefore, the return from such a radiator is felt from the first minutes.
- Possibility of local heating . The heat coming from only one side of the protective box can be used purposefully. This makes it possible to increase the air temperature in a certain place in the room, for example, to speed up drying, defrosting or to heat individual objects faster.
- Operational safety . Optimum utilization of the generated heat makes it possible to be satisfied with moderate temperature heating of the batteries. Therefore, the operation of heating fully meets all the requirements and standards of fire safety. And the presence of a protective box eliminates the possibility of getting burned or accidentally igniting objects that have fallen on the radiator.
- Possibility of heat distribution . Blinds installed on the front panel form uniform air flows in the right direction.
- Adjustable power and intensity . In such heating systems, in addition to the power range of the heater itself, it is possible to change the intensity of the supply of warm air flow. Therefore, even using equipment of low power, it is possible to successfully heat a sufficient area of the room.
Overview of the most popular models
Now fan heaters are produced with a capacity of 2 to 90 kW, while the heat supply in one hour can reach tens of thousands of cubic meters. Such a variety of models makes it possible to choose the most efficient and cost-effective heating option for a house, apartment, office, garage or any industrial premises.
According to the type of housing design, floor and wall fan heaters are distinguished. Based on the name, it becomes clear how they are installed and fastened.
- Wall-mounted using a special, durable console that holds the device in a vertical position.
- Floor models may not have a fixed installation site, and if necessary, move freely around the room.
Another distinctive feature of some models of fan heaters is the presence of two circuits. Such devices can perform both traditional heating of premises, and perform the function of an air conditioner, cooling the air. To do this, one circuit is connected to hot water, and the second - to the cold water supply system. Double-circuit devices are somewhat more expensive than conventional ones, but such an overpayment is fully justified by saving the cost of purchasing additional equipment.

Where are heaters used?
Based on the principle of operation of such heating devices, it is possible to determine the most effective areas of their application.
- Heating large rooms. It can be shopping and exhibition centers, sports complexes, shops and warehouses, showrooms, car dealerships and more.
- Seasonal and periodic heating of industrial premises. Some workshops are not equipped with a heating system due to the peculiarities of the work schedule, but in which sometimes, nevertheless, it becomes necessary to warm up the air. For example, in a car dealership for drying parts after washing or drying parts after painting. Directed flow of warm air is necessary for the speedy drying of washed carpets or car seats. Sometimes additional heating of warehouses with special climatic conditions is required, for example, in cases of a sharp drop in winter temperatures or an excessive increase in humidity.
- Heating of rooms not connected to a common heating system. Most often it is the basement and basement floors, garages, greenhouses and more.
Such a heating option as the installation of a water fan heater is much more efficient, economical and safer to operate compared to other modern heaters.
And the only condition is the supply of hot water and the ability to connect power to the fan.

Choosing a hot water fan heater and its principle of operation
In the modern world, the market offers a wide range of various heating and climate devices, with which you can control and
Radiators of water heating, or simply batteries used in centralized heating systems, distribute heat throughout the rooms according to the principle of passive convection.
This approach is not very rational in terms of heat loss, especially if the battery is in the corner of the room.
For this reason, there are convection radiators equipped with a fan that improve the distribution of heat throughout the room, accelerating the circulation of air between the sections of the battery.
In this master class, I will show you how to pump an ordinary battery to a convector one with your own hands.
Step 1: Fan Assembly
I took 4 fans Brushless DC Cooling Fan 7 Blade 24V 120mmx120mx25mm.
This type of fan is very quiet and was well sized for my battery. A connection of 4 such fans is enough for my pipe in length.
Fan specifications:
- 7 plastic blades
- speed 1600 rotations per minute
- airflow 58 cu. ft/min
- noise 38 dB.
- power supply: direct current 24V, 0.20A
These fans cost me 1200 rubles with delivery. Structural strength is provided by cable ties that go through holes in the corner of each fan and tie them together.
Step 2: Connecting the wires
The fans use standard 2-pin connectors like motherboards. They hold copper cables well. You can also combine the 2 connectors with a small piece of cable by inserting one into the back of the second.
This will help reduce the number of cables connecting the fans to the power supply. The power supply is connected by a 2-wire AC cable on one side and DC cables from the fans on the other.
The photo does not show the switch and the standard plug on the end of the AC cable. I took the power supply like this - 24V Universal Regulated Switching 25W Power Supply.
Step 3: Checking the operation of the fans
I connected the fans and checked their operation before installing under the battery.
Step 4: Legs and other finishing touches
I supplied my fans with 4 legs from a corner cut into 15 cm pieces. Then I just put the section under the battery. As a result, I got excellent heat distribution throughout the room, using almost silent fans, consuming a total of 24 watts:
Fans: 4*0.2A*24V=19.2W
- energy consumption: 80% of the total supply
- total power: 19.2/80%=24W
This is how I upgraded my standard hot water heater to a convection radiator.
To date, a large number of different heating and air conditioning systems have been created that allow flexible regulation of the conditions of the internal environment in the premises, as well as its maintenance. But most of them are effective only in small areas at home, or have an extremely high level of energy or fuel consumption when heating industrial premises and creating a certain microclimate in them. Therefore, especially for such cases, industrial heating systems were developed, one of which is water fan heaters.
Traditional water heating systems are characterized by low efficiency in terms of the time it takes to warm up a room. Hot water central heating radiators take several hours to warm up a room completely, and their use does not create hot spots that are needed for some activities, such as car washes or service stations to quickly dry something. or car engine parts. Therefore, the best option for working premises of this type are water fan heaters, which combine the basic principles of two heating systems, water and air.
Operating principle
The principle of operation of a fan heater with a water source of heat is in many ways similar to the principle of operation of a heat gun, in which hot air is accelerated by a powerful fan, creating a heat jet and ensuring high work intensity. In the case of a fan heater, hot water plays the role of heating heating, and it comes from the central heating system, therefore, in terms of additional costs, such an apparatus requires only electricity to ensure the operation of the fan, which expels hot air outside.
Such a device makes the heating of working premises the least costly and troublesome, because, to put it simply, a water fan heater is a standard hot-heating battery placed in a special protective box and equipped with a powerful fan. Therefore, for the operation of such an apparatus, it is not necessary to obtain additional knowledge and master complex safety precautions, because individually all the components of a water heater are familiar to most people in everyday life. Also, no additional knowledge and skills are required to create an industrial heating system from fan heaters, it is enough just to roughly imagine how the temperature is distributed in the room and you can do everything yourself.
Fan Features
Of the features, one can separately note the protective box, which protects from direct contact with the radiator itself, therefore, when working with such an apparatus, it is almost impossible to get burned. Also, the box does not allow hot air to spread, which allows directional heating of individual sections of the room and creates local areas with a high temperature where you can quickly dry any tools or household items.
Special shutters on the front side of the device provide a uniform distribution of the air flow. Additional safety is ensured by the fact that the operating temperature range of such a heater is quite modest, so it does an excellent job of heating the room, but there is no risk of fire and burns if touched by hands. The degree of heating of the water battery itself is not enough for spontaneous combustion even if foreign objects made of cloth or paper get inside the box.
Models and their differences
Models of such devices differ from each other mainly only in size and power, both the heating element and the fan. The power range is very wide and can vary from 2 to 90 kW, when creating an air flow with an intensity of one to several tens of thousands of cubic meters per hour. Thanks to this variety, many models with low power are quite suitable for use at home, since in any case they provide significant savings, because electricity is consumed only to ensure the operation of the fan.
Therefore, a small fan heater with a water source of heat is best suited if standard devices are not enough to heat an apartment or office in winter, since even a large number of such devices will not create a high level of electricity consumption. Moreover, it is thanks to the saving of resources that it is possible, if necessary, to buy a larger number of devices in the event of a breakdown of some part or other unforeseen situation.
According to the design of the housing, fan heaters are divided into two types:
- floor;
- wall.
Wall models are equipped with a special mounting console, which allows you to adjust the vertical position of the device and direct the hot air jet in the right direction. There is nothing complicated in the installation of such fans, it is enough just to fix the console on the wall with anchor bolts and connect the water circuit to the device itself.
With minimal technical knowledge, this can be done by hand, without calling a specialist. Floor options do not require fixing and fasteners, they only need a connection to the water supply, so they can be installed in any part of the room and, if necessary, easily moved to another place. The price of wall and floor models practically does not differ and is determined mainly by power, and not by design features.
Some industrial models can be connected to both hot and cold circuits at the same time. A water fan heater with two circuits can work both for heating and cooling a room or a separate part of it. The cold circuit is connected in the same way as the hot one, from the central water supply. The price of such models is slightly higher, but it is better to buy just such a device than separate heating and cooling systems.
Scope of application
- Water fan heaters are most often used to heat large rooms, since in any case, several devices are required so that warm air is distributed evenly, for example, in a store, so it is most advantageous to install just this type of heater.
- When it is necessary to quickly heat up an industrial room to a certain level or dry it, for example, wet-cleaned carpets or car seats. Conventional water radiators of the central heating system require at least one to two hours to fully warm up the atmosphere of the room, while they cannot provide intensive drying if necessary.
- A fan heater with a water source of heat is excellent for permanent heating of basements, as they often have an increased level of humidity due to climatic features or deficiencies in plumbing systems located in the basement. Therefore, in such premises, permanently operating devices are required that provide a low level of humidity, and a water heater meets these requirements as well as possible, as it belongs to the most economical types of heaters.
Among the disadvantages of such devices, one can note only their low mobility and the limited industrial scope of use due to the need for a hot water supply in a heated room. But, by and large, most modern heaters have disadvantages of this kind, which are able to provide the desired temperature throughout the entire volume of the room, and not just in one local area.
At the same time, the versatility and cost-effectiveness of such devices compensates for all possible inconveniences associated with their connection and operation, as they play the role of not only permanent heaters, but also make it possible to quickly dry both the entire room and its individual sections or any objects, so they can also be used as a dryer.
High performance, reliability, design safety, combined with unpretentiousness in use, as well as ease of installation, which is easy to do with your own hands, make fan heaters one of the best types of heaters for industrial and mass use. Due to the large power range, you can buy such a heater not only in the production room, but also at home or in the country.
The engine cooling fan is a special device that provides airflow to the radiator and the heated engine of the car by constantly and evenly removing excess heat into the atmosphere.
Engine cooling fan - device types
The design of this mechanism, which is often called a radiator fan, is quite simple. It provides for the presence of one pulley, on which four or more blades are placed. In relation to the plane of rotation, they are mounted at a certain angle, due to which the intensity of air injection increases (below we will tell you exactly where the fan blows).
Also in the design there is a drive. It can be: hydromechanical; mechanical; electric. The hydromechanical type drive is a hydraulic or special viscous coupling. The latter receives the required movement from the crankshaft. Such a sleeve is partially or completely blocked when the temperature of the silicone composition filling it rises.
The temperature increase itself is caused by an increase in the load on the vehicle's motor, which occurs with an increase in the number of revolutions of the crankshaft. The fan turns on at the moment when the clutch is blocked. But the hydraulic clutch unit is activated when the volume of oil in it changes. This is its fundamental difference from the viscous device.
Mechanical is understood as a drive performed by a belt drive from. On modern cars, it is practically not used, since considerable power of the internal combustion engine is expended to rotate the fan (the motor gives off too much of its strength). But the electric drive, on the contrary, is used very often. It consists of two main components - the control system and the fan motor of the engine cooling system.
The control system monitors the temperature that the car's engine has and ensures the functioning of the cooling mechanism. The drive motor is connected to the on-board computer. The control circuit of a standard electric actuator consists of:
- ECU ();
- a temperature sensor that monitors the temperature of the coolant;
- air flow meter;
- a relay (in fact, a regulator), at the command of which the fan turns on and off;
- crankshaft speed sensor.
The actuator in this case is precisely the electric motor that provides the drive. The principle of operation of the voiced circuit is quite simple: sensors transmit messages to the computer; the electronic unit, where the signals enter, processes them; After analyzing the messages, the ECU starts the fan controller (relay).
Many cars of recent years of production in their design do not have a regulator, by whose commands the fan turns on and off, but a separate control unit. Its use guarantees a more economical and truly efficient operation of the entire cooling system (the unit always knows where the fan is blowing, at what angle it is located, when it is necessary to turn off the device, and so on).
Cooling Fan Diagnosis
Neither the most innovative electric motor with high power, nor the ultra-reliable unit or control regulator is able to completely protect the cooling system from breakdowns. Considering that a failed cooling fan that blows in the wrong direction, or does not rotate at all, can become the culprit of engine overheating, it is necessary to constantly monitor its normal functioning.
Timely repair of system components will save your car from many troubles, but here it is important to correctly determine the cause of the fan failure. In other words, you first need to find a problem for which, for example, the crankshaft speed controller or the control unit or the electric motor does not work. Diagnosis of fan malfunctions can be carried out by any driver, focusing on the following recommendations.
The check should begin with the dismantling of the connector (plug) of the temperature sensor and its examination. In cases where the sensor is single, you need to take a small piece of ordinary wire and close the terminals in the plug. With a working fan, the control unit or relay should give a command to turn it on when closed. If the device of interest to us does not turn on during such a check, this means that it needs to be repaired or replaced.
In the presence of a double temperature sensor, the principle of verification changes slightly, and is performed in two stages:
- Close the red and red-white postings. In this case, the slow rotation of the fan should be fixed.
- Close the red and black wires. Now the rotation should speed up significantly.
If rotation is not observed, the fan will have to be dismantled and a new device installed in its place. If the radiator cooling fan is constantly running (blowing without interruption), there is a possibility that the sensor for turning it on has failed. It is easy to verify such a suspicion. It is necessary to turn on the ignition, and then remove the wire tip from the sensor.
If the device does not turn off after that, you can safely buy a new controller (sensor) to turn off the device. Situations when the radiator cooling fan is constantly running are not uncommon, and now you know how to solve such a problem. It also makes sense to check the fuse in cases where you doubt the performance of the mechanism described in the article. It is done like this:
- from the positive terminal of the battery, power is supplied to the red-black or red-white wiring in the fan connector;
- from the negative terminal, a charge is applied to the brown wires.
If the regulator or the unit did not respond (the device did not turn on), check the temperature sensor wire (all connectors and plugs on it). It may be necessary to make simple repairs to the cable (e.g. insulating it, replacing the plug). If it's not the wire, then you will have to purchase a new fan, as yours is broken.
Do-it-yourself dismantling, maintenance and repair of the cooling fan
A decent level of cooling of the radiator and engine of the machine is achieved only when the fan is periodically checked for various minor breakdowns and contamination. It is not difficult to regularly perform such a check and use a brush to clean the device from dirt and dust.
The principle of dismantling the fan is simple: the ground wire is folded from the battery; disconnect all, without exception, the wires that are suitable for the node in question; unscrew the device mounting bolts. Now you can slightly move the fan shroud and look at its condition. Such an inspection allows you to identify a lot of breakdowns and perform:
- Stripping and replacing wires: their poor contact is often the cause of inadequate fan operation.
- Repair of brushes (or rather, their replacement): this element of the system fails more often than others, as the brushes wear out very quickly, collecting all the dirt from the road.
- Elimination of a short circuit or a break in the rotor windings: sometimes they are in working condition, but they do not function well due to accumulated dirt on them. Solving this problem is not at all difficult - just soak a rag in solvents and carefully clean the windings (if necessary, special cleaning brushes can also be used).
Sometimes it is necessary to change the electric motor (for example, when the fan does not start when the engine is well warmed up). Repair of this important part of the cooling device, unfortunately, is not carried out.
Where does the cooling fan blow?
In this article, we cannot ignore the question of where the mechanism we are interested in blows. That is what users ask experts and fellow motorists in dozens and hundreds of forums dedicated to vehicle maintenance. Actually the answer is very simple.
The very purpose of the cooling device and the principle of its operation described above tells us that it blows exclusively on the engine, sucking cold air through the radiator.
If in your car the air flow is directed not to the motor, but to the radiator, this only means that the fan was connected incorrectly after maintenance or repair work. Most likely, they simply confused the terminals. You should install them correctly, and never again wonder where the fan should direct the flow of cooled air.
Homemade fan radiator for water heating
Vadim Shulman
Last year, with my own hands, in half an hour I increased the power of the heating radiator by about 1/5. That is, from a battery of 10 ribs, 12 is obtained. Or you can "make" all 15 battery ribs, it depends on the flow of water through the battery.
I already wrote about this "invention" last year in the post What to do if the apartment is cold in winter on the SAMru.org forum.
Several explanations-examples of increasing heat transfer from radiators: fans in a computer, a fan in a car stove and in an air conditioner, a fan electric heater. The last example is the most obvious, without a fan - it does not heat at all :(
The principle is known - when blowing a heated body, heat is carried away by air. That's what the heating needs :) The main thing is that the heat is carried away in the right direction.
Pay attention to ultra-compact water heating radiators, which are usually installed not in central or local heating systems, but in local heating with heat pumps. They are ultra-compact because the radiators themselves do not have excess power in fanless, natural convection mode. When it is necessary to heat the room at full power, the radiator fans turn on.
If not for the noise from the fan, it would be possible to use fan heating all the time. However, the last thing - to build up batteries in the heating season, will not end well. About this story - in the article.
I needed homemade additional heating temporarily.
But there is nothing more permanent than temporary.
This heating system is still alive and
waiting for peak heat loads.
As you can see in the photo, a pair of fans ("coolers") from a computer with a total power consumption of 6 watts (a smaller one - from a conventional power supply in a computer, a large one - from a server rack) are put on ... bamboo "kebab skewers" tied to 12 -volt battery 7 ampere-hours from UPS with adhesive tape. He closed half of the sections ("cans"), now it is a 6 volt battery and "3.5 amp-hour". To use this random property of the battery, see the end of the article, about the silent mode of operation.
This "design" was placed under the "German type" plate battery of the Turkish production "Baykan" and it drives the air up, helping the natural convection of air through the battery. Moreover, it drives so efficiently that the accordion between the plates with channels for water gives off heat "to the end" - it cools down to 33 degrees Celsius at a water temperature at the inlet to the radiator of 68 and at the outlet of 46. The temperature was measured by contact - with a multimeter thermocouple, on brass nuts to the battery of polyethylene-aluminum heating pipes. This is the second and last battery in the autonomous heating system.
When the fan is off at the battery inlet 62 deg. Celsius, at the exit 38, on the internal harmonica - 45 degrees. But this does not indicate the heat output of the heating radiator, because the flow of water through the radiator is not known. The heat carrier water circulates from the fireplace to the batteries according to the gravitational principle, without a circulation pump. Precisely speaking, the flow of water (flow rate) depends on the temperature of the water in the water jacket of the fireplace and the temperatures in the rest of the pipeline-radiator system. And roughly speaking, the water flow rate depends on the temperature difference between the water in the fireplace and in the battery.
With such non-motorized heating, if electricity goes out for a long time, we will not be left without electricity at all without heating. About blackouts - .
And the temperature of the air coming out between the radiator plates is about 33 degrees, both with and without a fan. Only with a fan, the number of cubes of heated air is greater.
Please note that the temperature of the internal accordion radiator between the plates with water - as well as air - is +33. "Accordion" is at the bottom of the radiator, at the cold air inlet.
In general, the fans are quite good at extracting and blowing heat from the heating radiator.
More "about the device" of a fan attachment to a heating radiator to increase heat transfer - heating power.
The fans are powered by an ordinary power supply with an output voltage of 12 volts. If you need a silent mode - I turn on through the ballast resistance (light bulb 12V 5W) - both battery charging and fans. Or battery power.
