Technology of manufacturing a frame for a window made of wood. How to make a wooden window frame with your own hands We make wooden windows with our own hands
AT last years plastic double-glazed windows confidently replacing wooden counterparts. However, their reliability and technical performance are firmly entrenched, time-tested. In addition, this is a budget way to change the window, especially if you decide to make a new one yourself.
Wooden structures are an environmentally friendly and reliable construction item. Everyone knows about their advantages: firstly, wooden windows “breathe”, secondly, wood is an affordable material, and thirdly, they can be made by hand, without the use of sophisticated equipment.
Windows for summer cottages, outbuildings or verandas can be made independently, having studied the technology a little. During production, attention must be paid to correct calculations window size and geometry. Not only the aesthetic factors of operation depend on this, but also the functionality of the structure.
How to make a wooden window with your own hands
The main point in assembling the details of a new wooden window is a jeweler's precision. If you are unsure of your abilities, then it is better to turn to a professional or order already finished window made in production.
Required tools:
- screwdriver;
- drill;
- glass cutter;
- electric planer;
- a hammer;
- chisel.
Stage number 1. Preparatory work
In order to make a window, you need to create a sketch. To do this, you must clearly know the dimensions of the future window and its functionality, for example, whether it will open or not, the number of sashes and vents.
The sketch is drawn to scale. This is important in order to correctly calculate the amount of material, the location of the bolts and loops, handles and heck. The presented video contains examples of window drawings, maybe you will find here what you need:
In addition, the calculation of the material for this window is carried out. It is better to do the calculation with a margin, in case the part, due to lack of experience, can be spoiled
Important! Decide in advance on the type of window in order to purchase the necessary fittings.
Stage number 2. Making blanks for the window
An important point is the choice of the type of wood. The most popular windows are made of solid pine, in addition, oak can be an alternative.
The board must be prepared for processing, namely dried, not deformed or damaged.
According to the drawing, cut out necessary details, which will later be connected to each other.
In working with a milling machine, a skill is needed, so it would be more appropriate to use an electric planer and an electric jigsaw.
In addition to the array, you can use glued laminated timber as a working material. It has a strong texture and is also resistant to deformation.
To work, you need a board 150x50 mm.
Stage number 3. Making a box or frame
A groove or groove is made in the blank boards, the depth of which is 15 mm, the groove is a recess in the shape of the letter G. We will need to make four identical parts of this kind.
Connect the parts of the box together with wood glue or PVA glue. Holes are drilled in the corners in the finished rectangle and a 3-4 cm rod is hammered in. This wedge provides a reliable connection of parts at a right angle.
The box is ready. It is placed in a window opening and fixed with dowels. Gaps are filled around the perimeter mounting foam.
Stage number 4. Making a window
The frame requires a beam of 6x4 cm. The shape and design depends on the number of compartments, glass and the size of the glazing beads.
There are two types of profile:
- single glass;
- double-glazed.
The single-pane design includes two grooves: one for installation in the box, and the other for glass installation.
Double pane profile - more complex structure, having three grooves, for two glasses and a box.
Usually glass with a section thickness of 4 mm is used, while the size of the bead will be 10 mm.
The base of the frame is assembled from blanks. To make the assembly convenient, the ends of the blanks are cut off at an angle of 45 degrees. And the pre-prepared profile is joined using the tenon-groove method, which ensures reliable adhesion of the parts and immobility of the structure.
You can also consider another reinforcement option - a metal corner. This part is sold at any hardware store. The corners are attached to each corner of the structure using self-tapping screws. Currently, builders have begun to abandon this method, believing that it is not aesthetically pleasing. However, if the window will subsequently be painted with paint, this option may be considered.
Stage number 5. Glass installation
Importance correct calculation the size of the glass is due to the fact that this factor determines the tight fit of the glass to the frame, which is responsible for the thermal conductivity of the window. If gaps are formed during the installation process, then it will blow into such windows.
Important! Measurements of glasses before cutting are made with an accuracy of up to a millimeter.
Glass is cut with a glass cutter, after which the sharp edges are treated with sandpaper.
When carrying out this process, you must follow the safety rules:
- be sure to work must be carried out in gloves with tight rubber coated to protect the palms of the hands from cuts;
- a mask is put on the face;
- the eyes are protected with goggles, as there is a threat of glass fragments and chips.
Working as a glass cutter also has its own subtleties. So, how to cut glass. The movements of the glass cutter on the glass surface should be smooth with a moderate degree of pressure. If you have not applied enough pressure, then the incision will be of poor quality and with further actions, you will get a jagged chip. On the contrary, excessive pressure can push through the glass, and you risk injuring yourself with glass fragments.
A ruler is used to cut glass. The material from which it will be made does not matter. If you don't have a ruler, you can use a straight line.
Important! The length of the ruler must exceed the size of the glass.
After processing with a glass cutter, the canvas is moved to the edge of the table, and lightly pressed by hand. If you have done everything correctly, the glass will break in place of the cutting line. Thus, we cut out all the glass for the window.
For final assembly on wooden details apply sealant. It is better to take a colorless tool so that the window looks aesthetically flawless. Next, apply the glass and let the sealant dry. From above the canvas is fixed with a glazing bead. The glazing bead is a triangular rail that simultaneously presses against the glass and the frame. His task is to fix the glass and hide the seam.
The rail is mounted using thin nails, less often with self-tapping screws if the glazing bead is wide.
Stage number 6. Window installation
The finished window is mounted in the box using self-tapping screws. The gaps between the frame and the box are sealed with mounting foam or sealant. Next, the window sill is mounted in place. You can learn more about the process of manufacturing a wooden window by watching the video:
Making a frame in two parts
When a window is required that will open, the technology changes a little and becomes more complicated. Such a window is made a little differently. In the center, a bar is mounted in a vertical position, which has grooves similar to the frame. The second half of the window is made separately, has a frame a few centimeters thinner. It is attached to the main structure and is a "door".
Making a wooden window is a fascinating and rewarding process. In addition, how nice it is to look out the window, created with your own hands, which keeps your warmth and a piece of your soul.
Wooden windows can be made with your own hands, especially if they are required for summer cottages, verandas, and outbuildings. The work must be done especially carefully in order to maintain the tightness and correct geometry of the structure. It is well known that wooden windows have high heat saving, durability and environmental friendliness. natural material will become durable if you apply competent surface treatment with special means.
It is impossible to achieve such an accurate assembly of elements on your own, which is provided by machines in production. However, making wooden windows with your own hands is qualitatively possible if you follow the technology for connecting parts and basic elements. You will need the following tools: a drill, a hammer, a chisel, a screwdriver, a glass cutter, a milling machine or an electric planer. First, a future window is drawn on paper on a scale and the amount of consumables is determined.
Box manufacturing
A popular type of wood is pine. This is the most affordable, inexpensive and practical material. The best alternative is oak, but for the first time it is better to make a window on your own from a less expensive variety. The board must be properly dried, not have knots, cracks, deformations. Please note that the box will be fixed in window opening and bear the brunt.
If glued timber is chosen as the material of all elements, then the structure will be more durable, since it has good strength and resists deformation.
The size of the board is enough to take 150x50 mm. In the blanks of the box, a groove should be made in the shape of the letter L with a depth of 15 mm. The four parts of the block are interconnected with wood glue, then holes are drilled, a wooden rod 3 cm long is inserted into them. It provides a rigid and fixed connection of the boards at an angle of 90º.
The box is fixedly mounted in the prepared opening, that is, a hole is drilled in the wall, dowels are driven in and fixed with self-tapping screws. The gaps between the wall and the block are sealed with mounting foam. Features of this fastening: the board is mounted without taking into account its mobility from temperature changes.
Window frame manufacturing
To create a frame, you will need a beam of 6x4 cm or more, depending on the design of the window. The shape of its profile is determined by the number of glasses, their thickness, and the size of the glazing beads. Single glass profile has 2 rectangular grooves (for glass and installation in a box). One more groove for the second glass is added to the double-glazed profile. To make a profile shape, use an electric planer or a milling cutter. It is enough to choose glass with a thickness of 4 mm, bead - 10 mm.
A frame is assembled from prepared boards. To do this, strictly in size, you need to saw them along the edges obliquely, that is, at an angle of 45º. The prepared profile will provide a tenon-groove connection, additional immobility is given to it with the help of self-tapping screws. At the same time, you should twist them so that the hats sink into the wood.
Glass preparation and insertion
The correct sizing of the glass ensures its precise fit and the absence of cold bridges. It is advisable to take measurements with an accuracy of 1 mm. Cutting is carried out with a diamond self-tapping screw, the edges are polished with fine-grained sandpaper. Safety precautions when cutting glass:
- work gloves to protect the palms from cuts;
- goggles to protect the eyes from glass chips, dust.
The movements of the glass cutter are carried out along the ruler, the length of which should exceed the length of the glass. Then it is shifted to the edge of the table, pressed with a hand. With a characteristic sound, the glass should break off along the marked line. The glass prepared in this way is put into the window frame for fitting, pulled out. Next, sealant is applied to the grooves of the frame and glass is finally applied. From above, it is fixed with a glazing bead, which simultaneously affects both the glass and the frame. It is fixed with thin nails. Beads can be made wider, then they are fixed with thin screws.
If the window consists of 2 parts, a vertical beam with the same grooves is mounted in the middle to the frame. One half of the window is made separately and has a thinner frame. It is attached to the main frame with hinged hinges, forming an opening sash. A closing handle is screwed to it with self-tapping screws, and a groove is made in a vertical beam with a chisel to close the window.
Final assembly
The finished window, created by oneself, is inserted into the window block and fixed in the grooves. It is attached with self-tapping screws, which must enter the wall through the box. For this, as a rule, a mounting gun is used, with which metal dowels are shot into the wall. All cracks are sealed with mounting foam, after it dries, the walls are plastered. The work is completed with the installation of an ebb and a window sill.
How to make a window with your own hands? If there is a desire, then, knowing some of the nuances, you can easily cope with this task. For example, handicraft wooden windows are in great demand during the construction of summer cottages or covered veranda. Or maybe you are planning to make a workshop? Then for it you will also need wooden window structures.
And if you try and use high-quality materials, you can make a window for a house or apartment. The main thing is that your future device meets the requirements of good tightness and perfectly correct geometry. In addition to saving money, you will get a window that is warm, durable and safe for human health.
You can increase its service life if you use various formulations to securely protect wooden surfaces from negative influences.
Of course, you are unlikely to be able to compete with factory production, since with handmade assembly accuracy suffers a little. But subject to the technology relating to the joints of the details of the window structure, it is quite possible to obtain a high-quality result.
Question solution: how to do plastic windows do-it-yourself, requires professional equipment and certain skills, so it is not available to everyone. Let's look at how to make a window with your own hands using available materials, such as wood.
Preparatory stage
To work, you will need a number of tools that you need to prepare in advance. It:
- screwdriver;
- glass cutter;
- a hammer;
- drill;
- chisel;
- electric planer.
After all the necessary tools have been prepared, you need to take measurements and make a large-scale drawing of the future window structure. Based on its performance, you can easily calculate the amount of material that will be needed to manufacture the system. When preparatory work come to an end, you can proceed directly to the manufacture of the box.
The wood that is most often used to create a do-it-yourself window is pine. It is affordable, practical and affordable. Of course, a window made of oak will be both stronger and more durable, but if you decide to make it yourself for the first time, then it is better not to experiment with expensive materials.
- The quality of the source material must meet the following requirements: well dried, free from damage and other defects such as cracks or knots. When choosing a material, keep in mind that the future box will be located in the opening and it will have all the main load.
Some experts advise using glued laminated timber for the manufacture of windows. It is believed that this design has increased strength and copes well with various influences that cause deformation.
You will need a board, the size of which corresponds to the value of 150x50 mm. On the details of the box, you need to make grooves resembling the letter G in shape, their depth should be about 15 mm. All four blanks of the future box must be connected to each other using wood glue.
After that, it is necessary to make holes and place a wooden rod in them, the length of which is at least 3 cm. This way will ensure that the connection is reliable and it will meet the necessary requirements for rigidity and immobility.
The installation of the box in the window opening is carried out in such a way that it is motionless. To do this, it is necessary to drill holes in the wall and drive dowels into them. Self-tapping screws are used for fixing.
All gaps formed between the window frame and the wall must be treated with mounting foam, which acts as a sealant. Please note that the installation is carried out without taking into account the mobility of the boards, which is possible when exposed to temperature changes.
Do-it-yourself frame device
To make a frame yourself, you will need to purchase a beam with a section of 6x4 cm. You can also use a large beam, it will depend on the design of your future window.
The profile shape of the frame will depend on how many glasses are planned to be used, their thickness, as well as the size of the glazing beads.
- If the profile will have one glass, then you will need two rectangular grooves, which are necessary in order to place the glass and subsequent installation in the box.
- If the profile is double-glazed, then you need to make another groove. To make a frame profile yourself, you will need either an electric planer or a milling cutter. Standard option glass thickness corresponds to a value of 4 mm, and a glazing bead to 10 mm.
After the boards are prepared, you can start assembling the frame. For this purpose, the boards are sawn in accordance with the dimensions at an angle of 45 degrees. The connection should be in the nature of "thorn-groove". To increase the immobility of the entire structure, it is also necessary to use self-tapping screws.
Please note that they are screwed in in such a way that the caps do not protrude above the surface of the tree and are recessed into the wood.
Glass work
Particularly important in this stage of work is the exact determination of the size of the glass. This will allow you to ensure a snug fit, therefore, will save the design from possible cold bridges. Measurements are taken, taking into account values up to 1 mm.
To cut glass, you will need a diamond glass cutter. The end parts of the prepared glass must be processed with sandpaper. And yet, it is very important when working with glass to comply with the basic safety requirements. These include:
- use of protective gloves. Thus, you protect your palms from possible cuts;
- eye protection is also mandatory, since the ingress of glass chips or dust into them can cause a minimum of discomfort, a maximum of serious damage.
When working with a glass cutter, the cut is made using a ruler along which the tool is guided. It is necessary that the ruler be longer than the length of the glass being cut.
After that, the glass is moved to the very edge of the table and pressure is applied by hand. Ideally, it should break strictly along the line drawn by the glass cutter.
The cut glass must be tried on to the window frame, making sure of the right size and pulled out.
Now all the grooves of the window frame, in which the glass will be placed, are treated with a hermetic composition and only then the glass itself is placed there. For additional fastening use a bead. It helps to fix the glass in the frame. Its fixation is carried out with the help of thin nails. If you use wide glazing beads, then their fastening will be possible with the help of self-tapping screws.
With the option of a window consisting of two parts, it is necessary to mount a bar of a vertical nature in the center of the frame, equipped with grooves of the same nature. Half of such a window must be run separately. Note that it is narrower than the first one. Its fastening to the frame of the main character is carried out with the help of loops. As a result of these actions, you will receive a sash that will open.
The last stage of installation work
After the window is completely ready, it must be inserted into the box and securely fixed. Fastening is carried out using self-tapping screws that pass through the box through. For this purpose, you will need a mounting gun and metal dowels.
The gaps present after assembly are processed with mounting foam. After it has dried, you can start plastering work.
Like any other window, a wooden one requires the installation of a low tide and a window sill. On this independent production window is coming to an end. Good luck!
Thinking about replacing windows? Do not rush to buy popular plastic, because in Europe wooden windows are considered to be of better quality. In the domestic market, wooden euro-windows are much more expensive than plastic ones, but you can make an excellent quality wooden window with your own hands. As a result, it can even be cheaper than factory plastic.
Selection and preparation of wood
The main requirements in windows are imposed on the profile, so it is necessary to choose high-quality wood for wood. Windows can be made from different types of trees. Mostly pine, oak and ash. For elite windows, modrina or even more valuable breeds are used.
For beginners, it is better to take pine, in case some part is damaged. Pine is cheaper than other species.
Making a window profile from a whole wooden beam unprofitable: too much waste is obtained and the product becomes too expensive. In addition, glued laminated timber is a 100% guarantee that the window will not dry out or deform from moisture.
For window profile choose glued laminated timber from 2 or 3 layers. What is glued timber? These are 2-3 boards glued together. Modern high-quality glue gives the tree additional strength.
Preparatory stage
To make the work go easily and quickly, it is better to prepare in advance a small set of tools for window production:
- Electric planer;
- chisel;
- Screwdriver;
- Drill;
- glass cutter;
- A hammer.
To make a window, of course, it is necessary to take measurements and draw a future product.
How to make a window from glued laminated timber with your own hands? First, you should cut a solid beam into planks. Only those blanks that are sawn radially or near-radially are suitable for the window. What does it mean? If you saw a tree trunk in half, and then cut it into boards perpendicular to the cut, then the boards cut from the central part are worth taking. Of course, we do not accept boards with defects. You can return to them later by cutting out knots, cracks and resinous areas.
Selected boards are glued together and dried. Their optimal length should be no more than 6 meters. When gluing, they should be placed so that the fibers along the beam are directed in different directions. This will get rid of the effect of residual stress in the wood - the timber will not twist.
Many firms buy ready-made glued beams from carpentry workshops. You can do the same.
For durability, all wooden parts must be treated with special solutions before the window is assembled.
Installing the window frame
The board of the box should have a size of 15050 mm. On all the details of the box, it is necessary to cut grooves in the shape of the letter "L" with a depth of approximately 15 mm. In this case, the grooves of one board must be aligned with the grooves of the other. After that, the box must be assembled by connecting the boards with wood glue. After the glue has dried, through holes are drilled at the joints, into which small wooden rods need to be hammered. This will provide the box with a strong and reliable connection.
The box in the window opening must be securely fastened. To do this, we drill holes in the wall and hammer dowels into them. The box will be attached to the dowels with self-tapping screws and fastening strips. We blow out the gaps between the box and the wall with mounting foam. It will act as a sealant.
To rainwater flowed freely from a wooden profile, the angle of inclination of its horizontal planes should be 15 degrees.
After installing the window, do not forget to plaster the foam: under the influence of the sun, it loses its properties over time and collapses.
Making a window frame
The frame of a standard window is made from a bar with a section of 64 cm. The shape of the frame will depend on how many glasses you intend to install in it and on the thickness of the glazing beads. For each glass you need 1 rectangular groove. Plus one groove is required for installation in the box.
When all the grooves are selected, we begin to assemble the frame. To do this, we cut the boards obliquely at an angle of 45 degrees. And again we apply the technology of spikes and grooves, as in the case of the box. We give additional rigidity to the structure with self-tapping screws.
How to install glass?
To cut the required glass, the measurement must be taken very accurately. Even 1 mm of error will create a cold bridge. We cut the glass sheet with a diamond glass cutter, and grind the edge with fine sandpaper. We draw a line with a glass cutter using a ruler, which must necessarily be longer than a sheet of glass. Having outlined the fault in this way, we hold the glass with one hand, and with the other we press a little on the cut off part. In this case, the glass should break off neatly and evenly along the intended line.
The first time we put the glass in the frame for fitting. If it fits well, we apply sealant (silicone) around the perimeter and insert the glass permanently. The final touch is fixing the glass with glazing beads and thin nails. If you chose wide glazing beads, you can fasten them with small self-tapping screws.
How to make a window with your own hands with an opening sash? A vertical beam will have to be installed in the center of the frame. It should also cut the necessary grooves. The part of the window that will open is assembled separately. It will have a slightly thinner frame that will attach to the main frame. On the casement be sure to install the handle and cut out the grooves with a chisel for all the necessary accessories.
I decided to make two large window frames for the veranda, consisting of 8 cells with 40x30 cm glass. I also decided to change the frames in the room, to make them better. In total, I got 5 frames of three different sizes. I did them for 4 days - February 27, March 5, 9 and 10.
First, I will tell you the technology of manufacturing the frame. I don’t have machines, so I used an improvised tool - a saw, a jigsaw and an electric planer. The frames consist of two fastened rails, one of which is 1 cm larger than the other, 2 cm in the middle. Thus, I do not have to “choose a quarter”.
I cut all the slats from the “inch” board. I had the best boards 25x100x3000 put aside. With a planer I bring the thickness of the board to 20 mm. Next, with an electric jigsaw, I saw it along the slats of the desired width.
For 8 glass frames I needed 50, 40 and 20 mm.
Wood window frame manufacturing technology
For other frames, another 70 and 60 mm. With an electric jigsaw I saw a board with a margin, if 40 mm is needed, then I saw 45 mm. I cut off the excess with a planer.
When all the details are ready, I assemble the frame on the table.
In the same way he made frames for the room. The only condition is that the window opening in the room already exists and has its own size, so we had to “dance” under it.
In the summer, I will sort out the frames and glue the PVA joints with glue. After installing the glass, I will coat all the joints from the side of the street with a transparent sealant. I will also treat the frames with an antiseptic.
How good are these frames?
- They are easy to make.
- They cannot be dismantled from the street, since they are screwed to the box from the inside.
- It is impossible to remove the glass, because the glazing bead is nailed from the side of the room.
- The glass is small, even a child will not be able to get through it.
Why did I decide to replace the old windows that I made and which are already there?
Firstly, they are not made very well - there are large gaps between the slats.
Secondly, I used decorative roundness, which is good from the street, but bad from the house, because they take away the light (the light opening becomes smaller in area).
In the new frames, the glass opening is only 1 cm smaller on all sides than the size of the glass, namely, by the width of the glazing bead 1 cm.
The old windows will go to the veranda and the barn. There will also be a frameless window-wall on the veranda. I have already thought over the technology, it remains only to implement it.

Arched wooden windows.
How to make an arched window
Many of my readers and subscribers are interested in the question of how to make an arched wooden window? In this article I will talk about my experience, and give examples of the work of other masters. This will allow you to get acquainted with the theory and get an answer to the question of how to make an arched window.
Before we start studying this topic, I want to say that arched and round windows are used very rarely and for us, "home craftsmen", are not of particular interest in terms of earnings. However, to be a professional in the window theme - this material is simply necessary for mastering.
We will not analyze the design of the entire arched window, but consider only the arched element of the window, which is the main one in arched windows.
There are several ways to make a window arch, and it depends on the equipment of your workshop with the necessary tools. We'll take a look at some of the main ways.
First of all, I recommend making a template for the future arch from a thin dense material (better, from 3-5 mm plywood). This template can also be useful for working with a manual router. The arch can be made from finished glued timber (see below)
and from separate blanks with a thickness of 27 - 28 mm, laid and glued together according to the principle of brickwork.
The sketch shows a structure consisting of separate blanks, let's call them lamellas, glued together both ends and planes. The ends of each lamella are sawn at a certain angle and perfectly matched to each other.
The order of assembly of such a structure is as follows:
- We lay the first row of lamellas with the ends, previously lubricated with glue, to each other.
- In a similar way, we lay the second row of lamellas on the first row, on the plane of which it is also necessary to apply a thin layer of glue.
- The upper third row of lamellas is laid in the same way.
Thus, a kind of three-layer “pie” is obtained, which must be pressed from above with a load or compressed with clamps to the surface of the table until the glue has first set. At the same time, it is very important that the joints of lamellas glued together in one row do not coincide with similar joints of conjugated rows. Further processing of the glued workpiece is carried out according to the template. The outer end of the workpiece, unlike the inner one, can be processed not very accurately relative to the template, since it will adjoin the wall of the window opening, but you will have to work with the inner side most scrupulously.
A router mounted on a milling table with the spindle up or mounted above the working surface of the milling table with the spindle down will help us with this. It's even better if you use milling machine using a thrust ring or other devices.
Now I will tell you about another way to make an arched window element and, in my opinion, it will be more accessible for manufacturing in a “home workshop”. First, we look at the sketch, according to which I will explain the manufacturing procedure.
The profile bar consists of three layers. The left sketch shows the end of the profile that must be used to make a deaf arched transom, and the right sketch shows the beam profile for making an opening transom. The red line marks the layers from which the beam is glued.
In this case, it is necessary to glue each layer of the future arch from the prepared lamellae. I recommend making a template for each layer, since they have different widths and only their outer radius is the same.
How to make a wooden window frame with your own hands
The lamellas of each layer must be glued together with the ends using any method available to you: a plug-in spike, a micro spike, etc.
Then we process each glued blank according to the template of the corresponding row. After that, we apply a milling cutter and make it where a fold is required. It remains to glue all these blanks into an arched beam in the appropriate order. When gluing blanks into a beam, clamps must be used.
In exactly the same way, we make an opening sash into an arched transom. It looks like this (picture on the left).
The ends of the arched element of the window are connected to the vertical or horizontal parts of the structure with a tenon joint or with a “moustache”. You are already familiar with this connection of window details from my book How to Make a Modern Wooden Window.
Now let's take a look at some arched window designs that are more common than others. Personally, I divide them into two categories. Wide - more than 1 m and narrow - up to 1 m. The thing is that the width of the arched window affects its filling. It is necessary to cut a vertical or inclined (depending on the design) impost into wide windows of an arched structure (even into a blind window). This strengthens the window structure from possible vertical loads, gives the window a unique design, divides a large gap
windows on the possibility of installing several glass packages, which greatly facilitates the work.
In the construction of narrow arched windows, I try not to cut the impost to divide the arched window gap into separate sections. In such cases, I make a thin slab on the outside of the window, which cuts into the overlap of the arch bar, and on the inside, a decorative grille is made that repeats the pattern of the outside of the arched part of the window and at the same time acts as a glazing bead for fixing the double-glazed window in the window structure. good example the right figure can serve.
How to make a round window
A round window is made in the same way that we discussed above. The only difference is that for the manufacture of the arch we used a certain shape of the arch, and to make a round window, we need to make blanks corresponding to half the circumference of the size of the window being made.
We also glue the blanks from lamellas, with ends. The workpiece glued and processed according to the template should be exactly half the circle. In the first layer of the future window of such blanks, of course, there should be two, which will make a circle. In the same way, we make the details of the remaining two layers. We collect each layer, consisting of two semicircles, on a dry one and lay it on top of each other in the sequence we need.
Do not forget to shift the joints of the lamellas of one layer relative to the joints of the adjacent layer, i.e. top or bottom. Only after careful adjustment can one begin to glue the semicircles together. As you can see, everything is not as scary as it seemed.
Friends, I'm waiting for your impressions in the comments at the bottom of the article. Don't forget about the "Commentator-Leader" contest.

1. Take a well-dried planed board, it will avoid window warping or shrinkage. Make a box for a wooden window. For its manufacture it is allowed to use boards with a section of 50x150 mm. On the board, make a groove so that in profile the board has an L-shape. The resulting comb will contribute to the tightness of the window.
How to make a wooden window yourself
Use an electric planer for this work.
2. After that, in accordance with the size of the window opening, cut the board into 4 parts and combine them together. It’s cooler than anyone to make such a connection using a straight spike and a straight groove. In order to make such a connection, it is necessary to cut a spike on one board (which will have horizontal arrangement), and on the other - a groove. This work can be done with the help of a saw, hammer and chisel, or use manual cutters. After that, coat the joints with wood glue and assemble the box. When assembling, it is important to ensure that the parts are connected at an angle of 90 degrees. To ensure a rigid connection, drill a hole in the end and insert a wooden pin smeared with glue into it. At the corners to the ends, install window metal corners in order to strengthen the box. Later, after the glue dries, the box is ready.
3. Now it is necessary to make a window frame, for which a beam with a section of 50x50 mm is used. The sequence of its manufacture is the same as the boxes. Make a profile using manual router or an electric planer. In order for the frame to open and close easily, a gap between the frame and the box of 1-2 mm is needed.
5. Insert the glass, install the hinges on the frame and box. Everything, window frame handmade is ready. When a wooden window is assembled, it must be strictly processed and painted in order to protect it from moisture.

Note!
Do-it-yourself wooden windows can be used on verandas, balconies, in a bathhouse, i.e. where the wooden window will act as a barrier against environment. Consider the manufacture of a single-leaf wooden window with your own hands. Now let's look at the design of a wooden window. The window consists of a box, which is attached to the window opening and the frame itself with glass. The box can be made from boards, say, with a section of 50x150mm.
Useful advice
Consequently, without special equipment, it is unlikely that it will be possible to make a frame out of wood, like the one sold in stores. But for rooms in which there are no special requirements for windows, it is absolutely permissible to make frames with your own hands. Let's see how to make a window frame with your own hands, in a home workshop. To begin with, let's take a swing at the production of a primitive, single-leaf design. Everyone knows that wooden frames over time, they dry out, losing their shape.
Do-it-yourself metal shutters on windows - types and manufacturing technology
Do-it-yourself metal shutters on windows
Metal shutters are the most preferred option for protecting a residential building or utility room from breaking and entering.
Unlike wooden shutters, metal is a more durable material, which greatly affects the safety of the window and property inside the house.
Such a solution has many positive aspects, since metal shutters are extremely difficult to crack. In addition, such shutters can be harmoniously combined with the facade of the building and fit perfectly into the surrounding architecture.
It is best to think over the protection of windows from penetration, it is best even at the first stages of construction, because in this way it will be possible to choose the most optimal installation technology.
Modern iron shutters are available in a variety of variations - the designs differ in the number of leaves, their size, as well as the way they are decorated. In most cases, the sash frame is made from shaped pipes, to which a steel sheet is welded.
In any design, shutters must be installed in such a way that moisture does not penetrate to the walls and window frame. Water entering through the cracks in the products will lead to the development of fungus or mold, which will gradually destroy the materials.
Metal shutters - the easiest way to protect your home from burglary
The problem is solved not only by ensuring the tightness of the seams, but also by the use of drains that remove moisture to the side.
If the house or country house is not planned to be used during the cold season, the best option removable metal shields will be used. Fastening of such products is carried out using easily detachable threaded connections.
Since there are no fasteners on the street side of the structure, metal shutters for summer cottages are almost impossible to open. The only drawback of metal shields is their high weight, but this does not apply to products made of aluminum and other light alloy metals.
Separately, it is worth mentioning X-ray protective types - such products are required for installation in X-ray diagnostic rooms. Such products are made of thick sheets of metal with additional shielding inserts.
Types of metal shutters
Deaf structures are the most difficult to crack, even with the right tool for this.
Among modern iron shutters, two types of products stand out:
- Solid or deaf structures;
- Blinds.
All features of the first type have been described above. Among other things, metal shutters on the windows are equipped with stoppers and trim.
External fastening can only be present in the presence of slopes, when windows and walls are not in the same plane - in this case, a frame is placed on the outside.
For summer cottages, you can install removable blind shutters - such protection can be removed in the summer. Elements of deaf shutters are protected not only from breaking, but also from external influences.
Improve appearance and further enhance the anti-corrosion resistance can be due to the use of a primer and paint coatings. A solid surface can also be decorated with forged elements - in this case, the degree of protection will remain at a fairly high level.
Solid metal products can have from one to three flaps
Summing up the intermediate result, the installation of solid structures is carried out if:
- Protection of the house from daylight and the eyes of passers-by is required;
- You need maximum protection for buildings in which you will be absent for a long time;
- Do you want to provide the best protection home at minimal cost.
Shutters-blinds are completely similar to solid structures, except that lamellas are used instead of solid steel sheets, forming a translucent blind structure.
Of course, such products are not as reliable as solid ones - however, cases of their hacking are not very common. The slats allow air and daylight to pass into the room even when the shutters are closed.
As in the case of solid structures, constituent parts lattice are profile pipes with a section of 4 × 2.5 cm. The main parts of the product are already hung on this frame.
Together with the shutters, the kit includes architraves, locks, locks, as well as devices to avoid accidental closing of the shutters. Lamellas on lattice types of products are arranged in such a way that moisture ingress between them is completely excluded.
Bivalve louvered metal constructions
Metal shutters will be preferred in the following case:
- A high degree of protection of window openings is required;
- You are going to be in the house and do not want to feel uncomfortable due to the lack of natural light;
- Do you want to give your windows a unique look?
For a detailed comparison with protective exterior window blinds, you can read individual material and make a conclusion which design will more successfully fit into the exterior of your building.
locking device
The locking mechanisms are located on the inside of the house, on the outside there is just a blank smooth surface.
Locks for mechanisms are similar to the locks used in the construction of safes.
The locks also have protection against accidental closing of the doors. The number of locking devices starts from two - top and bottom. If necessary, you can install additional mechanisms.
Production of metal shutters
For the manufacture of solid structures, it is best to use galvanized steel in sheets.
Steel doors can be ordered not only in specialized workshops, but also in workshops for the production of metal doors.
If complex metal decoration is not required, then you can make shutters with your own hands.
To do this, you will need the following blanks:
- 50th corner for loot;
- Sheet of galvanized steel 2-3 mm thick;
- Corner, channel or square pipe to reinforce the structure.
Before starting work, it is important to accurately align all dimensions. Do not use indirect calculations, be sure to measure each size directly - you will need the values of the vertical and horizontal sides of the window sill, slopes, diagonal lengths and angles.
Corner 50×50 mm
The contour frame is welded from a steel corner. Next, the steel sheet is cut to the desired size and attached to the prepared frame. Fastening is carried out either by welding or by self-tapping screws for metal.
In the case of self-tapping screws, the fastening step should not be more than 50 mm. When the sheet and frame are fastened, it remains to process all the adjunctions silicone sealant. Please note that the composition must be resistant to low temperatures and moisture.
For each sash, it is necessary to make stiffeners - they are mounted horizontally or in the form of a cross.
Holes for hinges are drilled on the vertical parts of the frame. The hinges themselves are fixed with bolts or self-tapping screws. From the side of the slopes, it is preferable to use anchors.
If necessary, you can install metal sheets from the inside - for this it is better to use aluminum shutters, so the total weight of the product will noticeably decrease.
How to make window frames yourself
The design and process of their installation is in many ways similar to those of steel counterparts.
Estimated purchase price
When purchasing suitable products, it must be taken into account that the installation cost is 15% of the total cost.
The cost of metal shutters depends on the number of sashes, the area of window openings, the number of components, the presence of painting, as well as ordering a professional installation.
It is worth noting that if a sash with an area of less than one square meter is required, then you will be required to pay for the whole square meter.
Blind shutters from one sash cost from 2200 rubles per square meter, double-leaf shutters will cost at least 3500 r / m2, solid louvered shutters from 3100 r / m2. Single-leaf shutters-blinds - from 3800 r / m2, double-leaf - from 4200 r / m2.
It should also be taken into account that two hinges (350 r/pc.) will go to each sash, and it will also be necessary to use latches (simple - 350 r/pc., end - 550 r/pc., crab system 1000 r) and locks (500 r / piece).
A metal casing costs from 750 rubles, anti-closers - 350 rubles, painting will cost 350-1850 r / m2, depending on the chosen coating.
Installation work is usually estimated at 15% of the total cost of all products.
If you are considering whether or not to install window shutters, the photos will help you make a decision. Modern shutters can not only protect your home, but also give window openings complete and aesthetic appearance.
Today, plastic windows have almost replaced wooden ones. Of course, the production of the latter has not completely stopped, it can even be stated that it is gradually expanding, and in the very near future its renaissance can be expected, however, wood windows have already moved into a higher price category.
Products that are in no way inferior to plastic, but significantly superior in environmental friendliness, and are much higher. For reasons of economy, many are interested in how to make a window frame with their own hands and whether a self-made window can become a full-fledged replacement for a manufactured product.
Preparing for production
It should be said that it will be possible to make a box and a frame with high quality, first of all, for someone who knows how to handle carpentry tools and approaches the work with due responsibility.
Most beginner home craftsmen will not be able to make a window frame with their own hands so that it is not inferior to the factory one, but at first you can make a window for a summer house or a workshop, in other words, hone your skills on “minor” objects. Often there windows are small, single-leaf or deaf. If you do not give in and resolutely approach the matter, it will turn out that everything is very simple.
The window consists of only 4 elements:
- wood;
- glasses;
- fasteners;
- accessories.
The main difficulty lies in the fact that to create it you need:
- selection of suitable material;
- accurate marking and high-quality processing of workpieces;
- accurate window assembly.
Figure 1. L-shaped box profile.
If the arguments "for" outweighed the arguments "against", then you can start making your first window frame with a frame.
For work you will need:
- pine board 150 x 50 mm;
- pine bars 50 x 50 mm;
- wooden dowels;
- drill;
- wood saw or circular saw;
- mallet;
- planer or its electrical equivalent;
- manual milling machine or chisel;
- window corners;
- self-tapping screws;
- square, tape measure, pencil;
- wood glue.
The primary task is to acquire sufficiently dried and even wood. Choose pine, as it is an inexpensive and easy-to-work material. Boards and bars need to be dried for another 10-12 days without any acceleration of the drying process, but under a canopy to hide them from rain and sunlight. If the material needs to be finished, process it with a planer.

How to make a box
Figure 2. Profiles for a window with one pane and for a window with two panes.
First, a window frame is made. Its height and width should be 4-5 cm less than the opening. This will facilitate its installation and subsequent thermal and waterproofing. When marking on the boards, use a square. Make a selection under the frame in them with a milling cutter or an electric planer, as the diagram shows (Fig. 1). Cut the boards to the desired size.
The connection of the verticals and horizontals of the box is done in a "thorn groove" (the spikes are cut out on the crossbars). When making spikes and grooves, be careful, as the strength of the entire structure depends on your accuracy. When marking and trimming box parts, consider the dimensions of the sample made on the blanks. Spikes and grooves are cut out with a router, but not everyone has it, so you can use a hacksaw, mallet and well-sharpened chisels.
Assemble the box on a workbench or other flat surface. Check the corners with a square. Measure 2 diagonals, if both lengths are the same, the box is assembled correctly. Pull the box with self-tapping screws and drill 4 holes for the dowels.
Unscrew the screws, disassemble the workpieces, grease the spikes, grooves, dowels with glue and reassemble the structure together. Insert the dowels, once again check the squareness of the box and tighten it with fasteners completely. You can strengthen the structure with window corners. Leave it aside for now.

Frame manufacturing
The window frame has a more complex profile. How it looks in cross section is shown by the following diagram (Fig. 2). A sample of 15 x 20 mm is made under the box. Samples 10 x 14 are for glass and bead. The dimensions of the frame must be less than the internal dimensions of the box by 1 mm on each side. This will compensate for the swelling of wood with high humidity.
If the tongue and groove joints and the installation of dowels in the manufacture of the box were a desirable condition, since it can be rigidly fixed when installed in a window opening, then these structural elements are mandatory for the frame. The opening sash is subjected to more intense loads, and its lack of rigidity can lead to skew.
As you can see from the diagram, the bars can be prepared for either double or single glazing. Make an appropriate selection on them and cut the bars according to the selected dimensions for the width and height of the frame. Prepare the spikes and grooves. Assemble the frame into one piece. Checking the correctness of the assembly is carried out in the same way as in the manufacture of the box. Make holes for the dowels, disassemble the frame and grease all contact surfaces with glue. Assemble the frame, check the corners, hammer the dowels with a mallet, tighten the frame with self-tapping screws.
It should be added that the fasteners should be screwed into pre-prepared holes of a diameter slightly smaller than the cross section of the self-tapping screws.
Wood is impregnated with drying oil or other compounds.
The frame is inserted into the box. After that, it is checked how correctly the whole structure is assembled. Canopies are installed, surfaces are painted, glass is inserted and bead is stuffed. The box is fixed in an opening without a frame. It is hung after fixing the box.
The simplest way to make a window is described, but the task will not become more complicated if, when making a box, in its lower crossbar from the outside you make a selection to install a low tide (then moisture will not get into the space between it and the board), and from the inside - for the window sill boards (this will provide additional rigidity for fastening the window sill).
It can be added that the frame profile can be assembled from plywood strips of different widths and thicknesses. Between themselves, they are glued and tightened with screws. This method is useful for those who do not have necessary tool for wood processing.
