Greenhouses From Window Frames: DIY Installation. Do-it-yourself greenhouse from window frames Do-it-yourself greenhouse from window sashes
Greetings to all. If there is no money to buy materials for building a greenhouse on your own, then you can use old window frames. Today, in almost all apartments, windows are being replaced with plastic counterparts, so there will be no problems finding such material.
In most cases, old frames are simply thrown away, so you can negotiate with institutions that massively insert plastic windows or with their neighbors.
It remains only to find out the nuances of construction, and then proceed to the creative process. If not all frames are suitable in size, then you can use small sheets of polycarbonate, mounting foam or plastic wrap.
Despite the fact that this option for building a greenhouse is economical, you can create a beautiful and functional structure for growing plants and fruits all year round.
Before construction work you need to dismantle all the accessories. For convenient fastening, the glass needs to be removed for a while. In order not to get confused, it is recommended to mark them with a regular marker. Plus, in this way, cracks in the glass can be avoided.
Paint and varnish with wooden frames must be cleaned, and then treated with a special antiseptic to increase the life of the future greenhouse.
Before you start building a greenhouse with a large area, it is recommended to start with a mini-greenhouse, this will allow you to understand the whole process of building a structure.
Frames are used as a roof, which are fixed on a wooden base. In order to be able to ventilate the greenhouse, its width must correspond to the width of the old frame. In this case, during the day it will be possible to open the roof. The length can be 2-3 frames.
For the manufacture of the frame, you need to prepare 4 beams and boards. Bars are dug in at the corners, after which boards are nailed. To make a slope for the slope of natural precipitation, the front shield should consist of three boards, and the side and rear boards of four. The top board will need to be cut at the right angle. After that, the shields are fastened with self-tapping screws to the dug-in beams.
Since the future design will be small, the glass does not have to be removed.
Mounting process:
- Old frames must be laid across the frame and attached to the high (rear) wall with loops.
- The frames do not need to be fastened together, this will allow them to be slightly opened at any time for ventilation.
- For reliability, you can install a hook on one side.
Stationary greenhouse
To build a solid structure will require more effort and time. Such a greenhouse has a large mass, so it is necessary to prepare the foundation.
- First you need to drive in pegs in all corners, then pull the twine. It is important that the structure is facing south so that the sun's rays always fall on the plants.
- Make a trench no more than 0.5 m deep and 20 cm wide. northern regions the depth can be 0.7 m. As a result, the greenhouse will not freeze through.
- The base is covered with gravel and sand with a layer of 10 cm.
- Concrete is poured on top.
- To raise the foundation a little, you need to make the formwork the next day.
- Leave until dry.
Frame installation
Approximately two weeks after pouring the strip foundation, you can begin to install the frame (stand with strapping). For this, bars and boards or metal corners are used. In the latter case, the strapping must be done during the pouring of the foundation. The side racks are connected at the bottom with bolts.
If for strapping will be used wooden materials, then you need to prepare a beam 10X10, for tying 8 boards, 4 beams 5X5 for side and intermediate racks. Self-tapping screws and metal corners are used as fasteners.
- Fix the beam 10X10 with anchor bolts.
- Using the vertical building level, set the side racks.
- The lower trim is attached with nails. For reliability, you can use furniture corners.
- The distance between the intermediate posts must correspond to the width of the frame.
- Fasten the top harness.
If it is intended to gable roof, then the frame is recommended to be made on the ground, and then put on the structure. The central risers are made of thick wood, and rafter legs and a skate from a 5x5 bar.
roof material
Since the construction of old windows is quite heavy, it is recommended to sheathe the roof with polycarbonate or film. In this case, the roof can be removed in winter period to avoid roof loading. Both materials are fastened easily and simply.
Anchoring window frames
- From the outside, the material is fastened with self-tapping screws.
- To ensure tightness, close the gaps with mounting foam and a strap.
- At the next stage, insert into the glass frame, lubricate the edges with sealant.
- Check the construction according to the building level.
- Fix the hooks on the vents.
Door installation
A door is mounted from the end part of the greenhouse structure. The box is made from high quality timber. As door leaf any available material can be used.
Now you can fill the floor with earth and start gardening.
Do you have old window frames? Make a greenhouse with your own hands (video)
If all the nuances of building a greenhouse from old frames are not clear, then you can read one more instruction.
As noted above, the construction of window frames is quite heavy, so you need to prepare strip foundation. You can use one of the following options:
- Stone. One of the most expensive materials. However, this allows you to build a reliable and solid foundation.
- Brick. Also not a budget option. With proper installation, it can last a long time. Supports wood construction.
- Concrete. Such a foundation is the most durable and reliable. The service life can be several decades.
- Wood. It is a strong material, however, not durable. It will need to be replaced after a few years.
frame
The construction of the old frames is already a reliable frame. The main thing is to follow simple installation rules. To ensure stability, you need to fix the old frames on the base, and then fasten them together, for this you can use one of the mounting options:
- Self-tapping screws and metal corners. This method is the simplest. During installation, the level must be observed. The corner is attached to the inside and outside of the corner with self-tapping screws. This mount is very secure.
- Nails and timber. An easier method. The frame on the inside is knocked down with small bars.
- Wire and clamp. The most budget option. In this case, at the attachment points, you need to make turns with wire. Clamps are used when possible.
Installation
Before work, it is desirable to develop step by step plan to make a greenhouse with your own hands for short term. A crucial step is the installation of the structure on the base. It is necessary to fix all the components on the foundation with fasteners.
A metal corner must be fixed to the foundation anchor bolts or with the help welding machine. Then fix the old frames to it. In addition, the frames must be connected to each other. Work must be done slowly and consistently.
greenhouse cover
Since a greenhouse made of window frames is heavy, it is not recommended to cover it with glass. But if the design has a small area, then an exception can be made.
It is best to use plastic wrap. To do this, make a simple crate of slats or steel wire. Then the film is covered. It is fastened with clamps or clips.

Video 2. Greenhouse 5 meters by 3 meters with an oval roof (frames + polycarbonate). The most budget option
Despite the fact that the greenhouse was made on its own, it must be checked for tightness, reliability, stability, light transmission, ventilation and other parameters.
Now you know how you can use old window frames. After the construction of the structure, you can proceed directly to the planting of crops.
Fresh and organic vegetables are always welcome "guests" on our table. The owners of summer cottages make a lot of efforts to grow "their" cucumbers, tomatoes and peppers. However, hard work alone is not enough. Indeed, in order to obtain high yields, it is necessary to create seedlings suitable conditions for growth and development. Therefore, a greenhouse is an excellent way out - with your own hands you can build a structure from inexpensive and affordable materials.
Today, many people in their homes are removing old window frames, replacing them with convenient and practical double-glazed windows. But such frames can be given a "second life" by using them for the construction of a greenhouse or greenhouse. So, today we will figure out in detail how to build a "house for vegetables" without significant costs.
Greenhouse from old frames: pros and cons
Before starting the construction of a greenhouse, both the advantages and disadvantages of such a project should be taken into account. First about the benefits:
- Affordable project cost. It is enough to collect the required amount of unnecessary window frames left after the repair, and you are provided with the main material. This is much cheaper than using new blocks to build a greenhouse.
- Quick installation. After pouring and drying the foundation, it remains only to assemble the frames into one whole - and the greenhouse built by oneself is ready. This stage will take only a few days, but you should carefully prepare for it.
- Kit available tools . A hammer and nails is all you need.
Useful advice: if possible, it is better to use a power tool - a jigsaw and a screwdriver. If the farm does not have these useful things, then they can easily be rented.
"Cons" of greenhouses from old window frames:
- Ongoing structural maintenance. Old wood dries out, and cracks form through which moisture and other adverse factors from the environment can penetrate.
- Limited service life. If old window blocks were used as raw materials for the manufacture of greenhouses, then their service life is quite short. True, for 5-7 years such a “house” for vegetables and seedlings will definitely serve.
Note! Old window frames suitable material for the construction of a greenhouse for a "home" personal plot. However, for growing, for example, cucumbers, on an "industrial" scale, it is better to choose a metal profile or steel pipes. Of course, this will cost much more, but the design will turn out to be more reliable.
Greenhouse from window frames for teapots
Before proceeding with the construction, you should consider important details. For example, should you do wooden frame Or can I skip this step? This will depend on the thickness and configuration of the assembled window units. With a significant thickness of the frames, it will be possible to completely do without a frame.
Stocking up on materials:
- Rubble and sand- for the foundation of the future structure. Of course, it is possible to build a greenhouse from window frames without a foundation, but the reliability will be questionable.
- Boards and timber of different sections- on wall posts 50 x 100 mm, on corner posts - 100 x 100 mm.
- fittings- nails, door and window hinges, locks and handles on the door, steel cornice, antiseptic for wooden surfaces. When constructing a roof from a sheet of steel, this material will also have to be purchased.
- Old frames.
Required tools:
- a hammer
- screwdriver - can be electric
- a circular saw
- chisel
- drill bits for wood
- level
- square
- roulette
- piece of cord
- polyurethane foam
- screws
DIY greenhouse - drawings
Any construction begins with the design of the future structure. However, in our case, you just need to assemble the structure from ready-made modules. We carry out the following preparatory work:
- We lay out the window frames on a flat piece of land, choosing details for the side and end sides. We achieve the most ideal compatibility of "puzzles".
- We measure and record the results of the layout.
- Doing detailed drawing on paper indicating all the parameters and dimensions of the parts.
- We are preparing three more drawings - the foundation, the frame and the roofing part of the future greenhouse from window frames.
How to build a greenhouse from window frames with your own hands - a step-by-step guide (with photos and videos)
So, after acquiring and preparing all necessary tools you can start work.
Step #1. Choosing a place for a greenhouse
The site for the building should be chosen taking into account the fact that the plants will need the maximum availability of sunlight. Therefore, there should not be capital buildings nearby or tall trees blocking sunlight.
If you are planning to build a greenhouse from film frames, then you should choose a site that is not blown by strong winds. Otherwise, the microclimate of the structure may be disturbed, which will adversely affect the plants inside. However, even a glazed greenhouse is not recommended to be placed in a windy area - in order to avoid stress.
The soil must be dry and dense, since subsidence and subsequent deformation of a wooden structure are possible in a humid and swampy environment.
Step #2. Foundation for greenhouse
The selected area needs to be cleared - remove debris, uproot roots, weeds and stumps.
We transfer the dimensions of the future greenhouse to the site and drive in small stakes around the perimeter, between which we stretch a cord or rope. Now in each corner and near the sides you need to dig small holes up to 0.5 meters deep - at the level of soil freezing. Pour crushed stone (soy about 10 cm) into the pits and tamp.
Now the formwork is next in line - we insert an asbestos-cement pipe (diameter 10 - 15 cm) into each pit, level it, insert the reinforcement. The structure should be reinforced in position with bricks and then poured with concrete. Assembling on the foundation lower crown from a bar and fasten with iron plates.
If it is planned to build a greenhouse from window frames without a foundation, then it is enough to simply make a strapping from a bar and lay it on the ground. For the purpose of waterproofing, you can use roofing material, in which the bars are wrapped (pictured).
As a rule, the concrete dries completely after a couple of weeks. After that, the plane under the greenhouse around the entire perimeter of the foundation can be laid out with bricks. Thus, a flat area is obtained, which greatly facilitates subsequent assembly.
Step number 3. We assemble the frame of the greenhouse from window frames
The assembly of the structure is carried out in the following sequence: installation of pillars and a frame made of timber, to which we attach window frames.
Important! If you plan to use timber for the frame, and not boards, be sure to consider their thickness. After all, a too thin beam simply cannot withstand the weight of the entire structure and at any moment can fall apart like a house of cards.
First, we measure the width of the window frames. Along the perimeter of the foundation, we measure the segments, the length of which exceeds the width of the frames by 5 - 7 cm and mark these places. At these points, we fix the standing ones from a bar of the same height. Then, over the pillars, we stretch the thread along the level in order to correct the tops. If there are protruding parts, you need to cut them down.
We take a bar and lay it horizontally on the "tops". Thus, "cells" for window frames are obtained. Now you need to install the frames, not forgetting the door and the window, and securely strengthen all the details.
With the help of mounting foam, we close the gaps between the modules and the rack ones. Professionals advise dry foam to be puttied or painted, which will avoid drying out.
Step number 4. Making a roof
The roof can be shed or gable - let's focus on the first option. To begin with, we lay the boards on the wall trim under the support of the rafters. At the same time, it is important not to forget to mark the slots for installing the inclined roof beams of the greenhouse from the frames.
We put racks in each corner of the side wall - this is how a slope is created. Between the racks we lay a bar on which we fix the front roof board. We put the side boards into the roof and attach to the front board with screws. Under the rafter boards, we make grooves in the extreme board, for which we use a template (the letter “P”, cut out taking into account the width and height of the nest).
Now we stretch the cord and check that all the beams of the rafters are in the same plane. We place on top roofing- it is desirable to make it from cellular polycarbonate, glass or film.
Each of these materials has its own advantages and disadvantages. If you build a greenhouse from frames under the film, then such a structure will not exert an excessive load on the foundation. True, polyethylene is required to be periodically watered with water to knock down dust and dirt. As a coating, many prefer polycarbonate. It remains to attach the door and the ventilation window and the design is ready.
Greenhouses from window frames: photo
There are many different greenhouses - small, large, single-sided, double-sided, arched. The photo shows different variants designs.
As you can see, a do-it-yourself greenhouse from window frames is not such a difficult construction (even for "dummies"). It is important to carefully study all the details and carefully take measurements. And, of course, stock up on patience and tools - and things will definitely work out! After all, such a greenhouse can be equipped with a heating system, water supply, light and other amenities. Good luck with your work!
How to make a greenhouse with your own hands from old window frames?
The short summer season is sometimes accompanied by cool weather and prolonged rains. However, the desire to good harvest, regardless of climatic conditions, is preserved by all summer residents. . A properly organized greenhouse is able to accumulate heat and maintain the desired microclimate inside the space.
Some people turn to specialists in this matter to create a greenhouse, the rest boldly get down to business and build a structure with their own hands. When performing work independently, other technologies are also used. However, such a greenhouse from old frames is considered the most simple option, it is quite simple to build. Glass, by its properties, is better suited than film for a greenhouse with vegetable crops. It not only allows the rays of the sun to penetrate better into the greenhouse, but also keeps it inside longer.
Important points during construction
Let's dwell on some details that are important to know in order to build a greenhouse from old wooden beams right:
- Apart from suitable place for construction on suburban area, the dimensions of the greenhouse also determine the dimensions of the existing old window frames;
- If you need a reliable design that is designed for long-term operation, it is better to make the frame of the greenhouse capital. An excellent option for creating a solid foundation, will be brickwork. The roof for the greenhouse can be made separate removable element, which is dismantled for the period of winter and snow loads. If the brick version for the frame does not suit you, you can build a base using boards;
- When building a greenhouse from unnecessary old windows, the upper part of the frame can be made with one or two slopes. To tilt the roof in both directions, you must first lay a ridge beam in the middle. If a shed greenhouse is planned, its location should contribute to maximum sun exposure during the day. Such a condition will favorably affect the condition of the plants;
- If there are a lot of old windows, it is better to make the entire frame completely from them, because such greenhouses from frames let in much more light, contributing to the active development vegetable crops during the growth period. However, you need to be careful not to damage the integrity of the mounted glass in the side part;
- Do not forget that your building must be airtight. In addition to the fact that the assembly of the greenhouse requires accuracy and precision, care must also be taken to eliminate gaps between the elements. Do-it-yourself filling of seams can be done with the help of sealants and special putties. The better the space is isolated from the inside, the better for the plants;
- Provide a few props that can support window frames at a time when you need to work in the greenhouse, caring for vegetables;
- Choose a place for a greenhouse from old window elements as calm as possible. It is desirable that a water supply to the building be provided for convenient irrigation. A great option is to build a greenhouse by connecting it to another existing capital structure;
- If the frame is made of wood, take care to protect the structure from the rotting process. Before you mount the frame, you must first distribute the roofing material around the perimeter, and impregnate the lower part of the supporting structure from the boards with resin. Subject to these measures, the base of the greenhouse made of window elements will last a long time;
- In order for the service life of a greenhouse made of old wooden beams to be obviously impressive, it is better to build a brick base to support the frame.
Sequential steps in the construction of the structure
Preparatory stage:
- Measure all window frames you have. Most often, the elements of old frames differ from each other in size;
- Knowing the dimensions, you can understand which option for the distribution of elements along the frame is the most optimal. If all the elements for the greenhouse are the same, the difficulties in their distribution will be minimal;
- Fix your solution after the calculations on the drawing, at least schematically. Thus, you do not have to do the same work several times, remembering the final version. On the drawing, fix the front door and the places reserved for the beds, mark the distances between them. Don't forget to make handles later. .
Determine the optimal location
The choice of location must be approached very carefully, since the competent placement of the greenhouse on the site is one of the main components of a successful harvest. In order for the sun to warm up the soil of the greenhouse from the window frames for as long as possible, choose a site next to which there will be no tall shrubs and trees. It is also desirable to move away from the buildings on the site, which cast an impressive shadow. The area under the greenhouse must be protected from drafts caused by the wind.
The plot of land under the greenhouse should be flat. The orientation for the placement of the structure is from north to south. Choose loose soil for greenhouse installation. Avoid intimacy ground water when placing the structure, it is better that the soil is moderately dry.
We mount the base with our own hands
It is quite simple to build a foundation for a greenhouse from old frames, since this structure does not create much pressure on the base. The foundation can be tape, for this, a recess in the ground is arranged along the perimeter of the greenhouse and poured with a concrete mixture. Also, the base is made of brick and wood. Brick and concrete options are more durable.
There is a base made of metal, it is also used for the greenhouse frame of window elements. Such a foundation is mounted strictly under the supporting pillars.
is the level match. Control this parameter with a special device.
Preparing window frames
This stage implies the dismantling of unnecessary parts from frame elements: fasteners, hinges, window handles, etc. Next, sand the surface of the frames, removing the old layer of paint. Under these conditions, the new paint will be distributed evenly and forms a reliable protective layer that prevents the process of decay. Additional processing of wood from rodents will not be a superfluous event.
We mount the frame with our own hands
Before installing window frames made of wood, it is necessary to build a frame for the future greenhouse. Its construction is not particularly difficult, it is necessary to be guided by the dimensions of the drawing, when preparing bars of the desired size. The assembly of elements among themselves is carried out by means of special screws and nails.
Fastening elements to the frame structure
In order for the structure to turn out to be stable and last for many years, it is better to mount the frames with the help of screws and self-tapping screws. These fasteners are not more reliable than nails, however, they can reduce the likelihood of glass damage. The space between the elements is sealed with sealants or mounting foam, depending on the size of the gaps. Thus, in the greenhouse will be observed the necessary conditions space tightness.
roof structure
The best option is a gable roof with a ridge beam arranged along the greenhouse. . It is better not to use the material for the greenhouse roof, choose more lightweight material. An excellent solution would be a polycarbonate roof, its cost per footage of the upper part of the greenhouse structure is quite acceptable.
Greenhouse on personal plot is not a luxury, but a necessity. But what if the budget is extremely limited? Even in this case, a greenhouse can be built - with your own hands: it will not be difficult to build from old frames.
Now a lot of people are changing the old wooden windows on new ones - plastic. In the vast majority of cases, old windows, along with glass, are sent to a landfill. This rubbish is great. construction material to build a greenhouse from frames with your own hands.
If you choose windows of the same size, then the construction will not be difficult at all. If they are of different sizes, then you have to try a little.
From old window frames, you can build both a permanent and a temporary greenhouse.
Temporary building
Old window frames are wooden, so they will not last very long - 6-8 years. In order to build a temporary greenhouse out of them, you do not need a special foundation.
It is enough to put a brick or wooden beam under them so that they do not rot too quickly. Our step-by-step instructions will help you assemble a temporary shelter.
Procedure
- We take out all the glass from the windows and clean them from tatters of old paint. We clog all the windows that we do not plan to use.
Advice!
To slow down the process of decay, it is worth proliferating the tree or painting it with oil paint.
- Unscrew all metal parts(latches, hinges, etc.).
- We calculate the dimensions of the future building based on the number of frames available.
- We mark with the help of pegs and twine the boundaries of the future building.
Advice!
Don't forget to check the markup.
The diagonals of the rectangle must be equal.
- We dig in bricks along the twine so that the upper edge of the brick is raised above ground level by 2-3 cm. We choose the digging step in such a way that each frame lies on three bricks.
- We assemble the frame of the structure from a bar 50x50 mm. The height of the frame must be at least 170 cm. To reduce the cost of construction, you can use a dry board with a thickness of at least 30 mm. The supporting posts of the frame should be located so that they meet the joints of the windows.
- Attaching perimeter windows. It is necessary to nail them to the frame as often as possible in order to increase the strength of the structure.
Note!
We install the frames with the vents outward so that they do not open with the wind.
- Making a roof frame. Since we have a greenhouse without a pillow, it is not recommended to cover it with the same windows with glass, so as not to increase the weight of the structure. There can be two options for roofing - from a film or from polycarbonate. We have the most budgetary structure, so we do not consider the option with polycarbonate.
The roof can be either single-pitched or double-pitched.
- Shed. For its device, we increase one side row of frames up by 60-100 cm, depending on the width of the building. You may have to cut the frames and knock them together windows of the right size.
Note!
The height difference for a film greenhouse should be approximately 25-30 cm for each meter of run length.
After that, you can lay the cross beams. They can be made from a single bar with a section of 50x50 mm. You can also splice the disassembled parts of the windows, but then you will need to install props.
Note!
The installation step of the rafters should be such that it is convenient to pull.
For example, if the film is meter wide, then the installation step of the rafters is 90 cm.
- Gable. On top of the finished frame from the frames, we lay the crossbars from a bar 50x50 mm. From the same beam we make roof rafters, which we nail to the crossbars. The height difference from the roof ridge to the walls should be 50-70 cm. At the top, the rafters can be connected to each other by trimming windows.
Note!
To prevent the frame from moving apart under the weight of the roof and precipitation on it, it may be necessary to install supports under the transverse beams.
- We hang entrance doors , the benefit of a variety of loops and latches remains a sufficient amount.
- Carefully seal all cracks. Building foam will be used, silicone sealant and even ordinary clay. In the latter case, the clay should be mixed with fluffy tow as a binding filler.
- Insert glass into the side walls. If there are not enough glasses, then these places can be clogged with polyethylene or polycarbonate residues.
- We stretch the film on the roof.
In order for the film to sag as little as possible, the order of its stretching should be as follows:
- We cut pieces of film along the length of the roof with a margin of 40 cm;
- If necessary, cut the pieces along;
- We roll out the first piece on the roof in such a way that the film hangs equally on both sides;
- We nail one edge through the slats (glazing beads, shingles);
- We stretch the film from the middle to the edges with a twist around the next rafter and fix it with carnations or a stapler;
- The operation is repeated with the following pieces.
- We fix the side edges of the roofing film through the rails.
A temporary greenhouse from old frames is ready. This design is unsuitable for use in the winter, so the film must be removed from the roof for the winter. Otherwise, not only the film may break through, but the entire structure may fall apart.
In order for the structure to successfully withstand the winter, a more serious approach is needed. The price of a capital structure is higher, however, strength and reliability are many times higher.
Capital structure
In order to build a capital greenhouse from old window frames, a foundation is already needed. A greenhouse made of frames, standing on a concrete pad, will last much longer, especially if you take care of the tree. Such a structure can already be covered with polycarbonate, and the roof can be made from the same window frames.
Sequence of work
There is nothing special in pouring the foundation for such a structure, so we will not dwell on it in detail. For a small greenhouse, a concrete cushion with a width and depth of a shovel will suffice. For greenhouse bigger size, for example, 3x6m foundation depth - 45-50 cm, width 25-40 cm.
The edge must be raised above the ground by 10-15 cm. Pieces of the corner should be immediately concreted into it along the long sides for the subsequent fastening of the frames.
The corners should protrude from the concrete by 5-10 cm.
The foundation hardens for about a week or two.
After that, you can proceed directly to the construction:
- We lay out of brick at the corners of the foundation square columns 170-180 cm high. The same columns can be laid out on the long sides of the building so that 2-3 frames fit between them.
- We prepare the frames for construction in the same way as in the case of a temporary structure.
- In the middle of the brick columns, we make the upper and lower frame trims from a 50x50 mm timber or a board with a thickness of at least 30 mm. We fasten the lower harness to the foundation corners.
Note!
The beam of the upper trim should lie on top of the posts, and the lower one should lie directly on the foundation.
- We assemble the side and end walls of the greenhouse in the same way as in the temporary shelter option.
- The roof is arranged in a similar way. In the case of a shed greenhouse, the side posts should be increased to the required height.
- If the roof is made from old windows, then the distance between the roof rafters should be such that the glazing frames fit between them with a slight interference.
- Next, we hang the door and close up all the cracks.
- In order to make it convenient to walk, the central passage in the greenhouse can be deepened by 15-20 cm.
Summary
Thus, with skill and a minimum amount of money, a greenhouse of this kind can be built. To begin with, you can try to build a temporary structure, and then think about a more capital one.
For more information, watch the video in this article.
You can always buy ready-made greenhouses freely in specialized stores. But, they are expensive and not many gardeners can afford to purchase them. There is only one thing left, to build a structure with your own hands.
If you can’t find the discarded frames, then you can negotiate with the workers or the manager from the metal installation company plastic windows. After all, the happy owners of new plastic windows simply throw the old ones into a landfill. Why not use old unnecessary frames. It should, for starters, choose a place where a new greenhouse will be built on a personal plot.
What you need to pay attention to:
- Good illumination;
- Mandatory orientation from North to South;
- Dry dense soil;
- Windless area;
- The site must be flat;
- Lack of groundwater.
Next, you need to pre-prepare the old window frames. It is necessary to remove or cut off those areas that are clearly rotten or have mold on them, remove all fittings, remove all old paint from the frames with a scraper or a building dryer.
Be sure to remove all glass (in order to avoid damage to the glass, in case of impacts during installation of the structure).
It is necessary to treat the wood with an antiseptic to protect it from rot, mold and dirt, strengthen all the windows, if they are not needed in the new greenhouse design, restore the wood of the frames.
Installation of a greenhouse from window frames
Very often, in the yards of multi-storey buildings, you can see a lot of discarded wooden window wounds. Residents are replacing old wooden frames with plastic frames. But when they throw them away, the residents do not even realize that this is a valuable building material for summer residents. From these frames you can build an excellent greenhouse, and it is necessary when growing seedlings and early fruits.
Where to begin:
- Make a careful measurement of window frames;
- Draw accurate drawings of the future greenhouse;
- Collect tools.
The first thing to do at the beginning of the construction of such a greenhouse is to measure all the existing old window frames. It is necessary to know this in order to accurately arrange the available stocks.
On the drawing, it is necessary to indicate the place for entering the greenhouse, the exact location of the beds and the passages between them, for their maintenance.
Some standard sizes buildings - the beds must be equipped with a width of 1 m, and the passage between the beds is approximately 80-100 cm, and the height of the greenhouse should be more than 1.70 m.
How to build a greenhouse with your own hands from window frames
The first thing that is needed for the greenhouse is the construction of the foundation, because the old window frames are quite heavy. Most often, they build a strip foundation. First, the dimensions of the greenhouse are outlined, according to the diagram. Then they dig a trench to a depth of 42-53 cm deep. We strengthen the formwork from wooden boards.
So that the boards can be easily removed from the concrete, they must be wrapped with polyethylene.
Wire reinforcement is laid down the trench. Let's prepare a solution of sand, gravel, cement (M200-400) and water. After solidification, carefully remove the boards, and it is necessary to allow the foundation to gain strength (3-4 weeks). When constructing the foundation, it must be borne in mind that it will be ready only in a month.
Steps to remember when building:
- We arrange a strip foundation;
- We install the bars as the main frame;
- We build the main part - we fix the old window frames;
- We are building a roof.
The voids between the foundation and the ground must be compacted with wet sand, and the simplest waterproofing must be made from above - a roofing material tape or bitumen. Next stage- this is the installation of a frame for a greenhouse from harvested wooden frames. We assemble everything according to the drawing. First, you need to build a framework. It is made from a wooden beam. Saw off a bar a certain amount and the required length. Between themselves, the timber is fixed with self-tapping screws and metal corners, the frames should also be fixed to the timber, using self-tapping screws. But it is even better if the main racks of the frame are vertical racks that will be strengthened earlier, at the stage of pouring the foundation. Any cracks and openings must be sealed, the structures do not need drafts.
The last stage of construction is the construction of the roof. It can be single or double. Everything is simple here. If there are few materials, then it is necessary to build shed roof. And if there are enough old wooden frames, and gardeners have some means, then you can take a swing at gable roof or even a more expensive option - a roof made of polycarbonate sheet. The greenhouse roof assembly is a hermetic connection of glass or a polycarbonate sheet, or simply a dense polyethylene film with a frame and timber, since if excess moisture gets inside the greenhouse, plants may suffer due to mold and rot. After all, the glass is inserted into the frames.
But there is another option - homemade greenhouses. The most important thing in this option is the installation of wooden beams frame of the future structure. Along the entire perimeter, the vertical bars are connected and thus additionally reinforced with each other by long wooden planks. These boards will also be the walls for the greenhouse. Boards are fastened to the bars with self-tapping screws with metal corners.
Then we attach old wooden window frames, previously prepared, to the frame of the future greenhouse. They are hinged so that you can easily open the greenhouse or, in general, remove the frame entirely.
Elite greenhouse made of plastic windows
Recently, during the construction of new modern apartment buildings, which are already rented with metal-plastic windows, but not of very good quality. The owners of new apartments most often try to get rid of low-quality plastic windows. Often, after the delivery of a new house, you can also see quite decent plastic window. For a window to an apartment, it is clearly not suitable, but for the construction of a greenhouse - just right.
The building has the following stages:
- Foundation;
- Frame made of wooden beams;
- Fastening frames of plastic windows to the bars;
- Roof construction;
- Debugging of plastic windows.
A greenhouse is a simple matter, even for dummies. It is necessary to carefully measure the old window frames and, based on existing materials, draw a drawing of the future greenhouse, and strictly follow this plan. Well, and most importantly, the construction of a greenhouse is not a one-day job.
The bonus of the built greenhouse is early vegetables and greens, and proven seedlings of excellent quality.
Do-it-yourself greenhouse from window frames (video)
This type of greenhouse has been the most sought after and popular among amateur gardeners for many years. This building looks very nice on the site. And if around the greenhouse a little work on landscape design, then it will turn out not only a functional structure, but will delight the eyes of its owners. It should also be noted that access to plants, with this type of greenhouse, is very good and convenient. It is accessible from all sides and is very successful and functional.
