Penofol is thick. Penofol foil: description of characteristics and properties. Thermal insulation qualities of Penofol
The name Penofol has become so popular that this polyethylene foam with foil is sometimes used where it is not necessary to the detriment of the result with monetary losses. The hype is promoted by sellers who, for the sake of sales, attribute miraculous properties to polyethylene foam. Consider how Penofol is correctly applied, why sometimes owners get losses with this material ....
What is Penofol
Foamed polyethylene with foil is a soft and elastic rolled material, usually from 3.5 to 10 mm thick, for use as a substrate, vapor barrier, wind barrier, insulation layer.
According to the manufacturer, the thermal conductivity of the uncompressed material is in the range of 0.037 - 0.05 W / m ° C. For comparison, for foam - 0.035 - 0.04 W / m ° C - the material is slightly warmer ...
The pasted layer of aluminum foil reflects infrared radiation, preventing it from escaping from a heated house to a cold street. It is also impervious to water vapor.
It is produced with a thickness of 3 - 10 mm more often in rolls up to 36 meters long, with a width of 1200 mm.
The material is very light and easy to process, cut with scissors, fastened with glue, or pressed with screws, crate. Convenience and ease of use, as well as a small price, contribute to popularity and ... misuse.
Types of Penofol
Distinguish:
Thermal insulation qualities of Penofol
It should be noted that when compressed by 2–3 times of the initial thickness, air is partially displaced from the material, and the thermal conductivity coefficient increases significantly. At the same time, a decrease in the layer thickness entails a proportional decrease in the resistance to heat transfer. This means, at least, that Penofol, as a heater, should not be used in a compressed state.
On the manufacturer's website you can find the following values:
- resistance to heat transfer R of the insulation "PENOFOL®" in a design with a closed air gap - 1.175 - 1.362 m2S / W.
Apparently, such a high value for a thin layer of insulation was obtained by adding the resistance to heat transfer of directly foamed polyethylene 5–10 mm thick - only 0.15–0.3 m2C / W, and also adding here the heat saving from the foil (barrier to radiant heat), which completely depends on the radiation power from the inside, the temperature in the room, the presence of heating sources, the degree of radiation absorption by the structures, and also, apparently, also adding the resistance of the “closed air gap” of the structure, which can actually reach 1.0 m2C / W, for example, in a double-glazed window.
Nevertheless, the obvious fact is that Penofol really insulates, it remains only to apply it correctly.
Basic rules for the use of Penofol
Where and how Penofol is mainly used in practice
Experts warn. Large-scale use of shielding with conductive foil can disrupt the natural magnetic background, increase (decrease) electromagnetic intensity, disrupt the operation of transceiver devices, which cannot be called useful and correct ...
Examples of incorrect and dangerous use of Penofol
- Laying Penfol under a cement (reinforced concrete) screed. The foil is destroyed by the alkaline aggression of concrete, the insulation layer is compressed excessively. There is no warming effect.
- The use of Penofol as the main layer of insulation in structures that must be insulated in accordance with the standards - in the floors, in the roof, in the walls. At the same time, users are usually guided by the assurances of sellers that the material replaces "5 centimeters of polystyrene" or "6 centimeters of mineral wool." As a result, without the main insulating layer (in most cases it is economically optimal from 10 cm of effective insulation ...), the structures remain cold.
- Overlay from the side of the living space directly on Penofol, without leaving an air gap, finishing panels, wooden finish, wooden structures, which entails moistening of the finish, the development of mold, rotting of wood due to condensate accumulated on the vapor barrier-insulation. After a year of such operation, according to the owners, Penofol is “black from mold”.
- Laying inside panel structures along the foil side of the electrical wiring.
- Jointing of Penofol sheets with gaps left, which, in addition to a general decrease in insulation, leaves greater air permeability (drafts) in individual structures, which completely eliminates the presence of an insulating layer.
Foam based foil.
For complex insulation of residential and non-residential buildings, the following are used: synthetic materials: expanded polystyrene, foam plastic, polystyrene, other polymeric products, including penofol. The technical characteristics of the latter are quite good. Unlike its counterparts, which accumulate heat in themselves, and then return it to the room, it reflects thermal radiation. As a result, the level of thermal permeability of the building is reduced several times. Another advantage of this insulation is fire safety. It is possible to perform wall insulation with penofol from the inside and outside. Neither the weather conditions nor the possible aggressive environment will harm him.
What is penofol?
Penofol is a foamed, foil-coated polyethylene with a closed cell structure. Today you can buy the following types of this material:
- A - the foil is applied only on one side, which reduces the cost of purchase;
- B - the foil is applied on both sides. This increases the resistance of the material to physical stress;
- C - foiling occurs only on one side, while the second is covered with a resistant, adhesive composition. This simplifies the use of insulation in hard-to-reach places;
- ALP - foil on one side. A polyethylene film is applied over the aluminum layer. Used in agriculture;
- R - upper, reflective layer has a relief structure;
- NET - is characterized by increased vapor barrier, and therefore is used when laying pipes for heating mains, water utilities;
- AIR is indispensable for thermal insulation of ventilation wiring.
Cushion thickness may vary.
Penofol is characterized by the following:
- ultra-low thermal conductivity, which ranges from 0.037 W / m ° C to 0.052 W / m ° C;
- reflectivity of the surface of thermal radiation from 95% to 97%;
- low water absorption 0.35-0.7% per 1 cubic meter;
- low vapor permeability 0.001 mg/m h Pa;
- high level of sound insulation - over 32 dB;
- compressive and bending strength - 44-74 kg / m. cube
It is very convenient to insulate the walls with penofol from the inside and outside of the building, since it does not create additional loads on the ceiling. Material weight 44-74 kg/m. cube (weight depends on the type of thermal insulation). Actual and floor insulation penofol. After all, the material is not afraid of temperature changes (the operating temperature range is from -60°C to +100°C).
Penofol and floor
It is necessary to leave a ventilated gap.
Thermal insulation of the floor wooden house . Insulation of the floor with penofol in a wooden house is carried out along the logs. Material types A and B can be used for this. The installation method depends on the type of thermal insulation chosen. About complex we have already written earlier.
Method using type A insulation. Work progress:
- surface preparation;
- choice of timber;
- organization of vapor barrier;
- laying the lower tier lag;
- installation of the main insulation;
- laying penofol;
- second tier lag;
- clean flooring.
The previous coating is completely removed to the foundation. The surface is cleaned of debris, dust. To do this, it is advisable to use an industrial vacuum cleaner.
Penofol, as an independent, thermally insulating material, cannot protect the building from heat loss. That is why it is used in combination with the main insulation, for example, foam, mineral wool.
The height of the beam should be commensurate with the height of the selected main insulation plus 5 cm to organize a ventilated gap. In most cases, bars of 100 mm by 100 mm or 100 mm by 150 mm are suitable, where the first value is the height, the second is the width of the product. If necessary, the height is grown. The length is chosen arbitrarily. Experts recommend choosing the length of the timber in accordance with the size of the room. Otherwise, the logs will have to grow, which will adversely affect the stability and strength of the structure.
Joints are glued with special adhesive tape.
Vapor barrier can be a polyethylene film or a special membrane. In some cases, type B penofol is used. Previously selected bars go on top of it. They are laid across the width of the room in increments of 35-40 cm. At the same time, they indent from the walls by 1-2 cm. It is needed to compensate for the thermal and operational expansion of the lag. Between the last log and the wall, a gap of 1-2 cm is maintained, regardless of the step of laying the bars.
The main insulation material is mounted by surprise. In this case, there should be no gaps between the lags and thermal insulation. Penofol is laid on the insulation with a foil layer down. Floor insulation with penofol in a wooden house is not overlapped. It will be bad for him protective functions. Only an overlap of about 10 cm is made on the walls. The joints between the sheets are glued with adhesive aluminum tape. Further, on top of the foil material, a second tier of lag is organized, along which there is a rough floor and a fine finish.
A stapler or building brackets for fixing are suitable if the balcony is insulated with penofol.
Thermal insulation of the concrete base. If it is impossible to insulate a wooden floor with penofol without organizing double logs, then everything is much simpler with a concrete or cement base. The main requirement is a perfectly even rough finish. For residential and administrative buildings the presence of an additional layer of thermal insulation under the rough floor screed is mandatory. The next condition is the ventilation gap. It should be above the foil part of the penofol. Otherwise, condensation will accumulate on the foil, which will adversely affect the protective properties of the thermal insulation pad.
Logs are placed on top of reflective insulation.
Experts tell how to insulate the floor with penofol correctly according to concrete base. All work is carried out in several stages:
- rough floor screed;
- installation of penofol;
- metal frame device;
- organization of the second layer of penofol;
- clean flooring.
Penofol is laid on top of the rough, concrete floor screed. Here it is advisable to use type C material, since it already has an adhesive on one of its sides, it is easier to work with it. Penofol is mounted end-to-end on the floor, an overlap of 10 cm is made on the walls. All seams are glued with foil tape. Further organize metal carcass on which the second layer of penofol is laid. On top is another metal frame. It will act as a support for the rough and finish flooring.
If the insulation of unheated premises or buildings that are used only in the warm season is carried out, one layer of penofol is enough.
Penofol and roof insulation
Penofol is placed with a reflective surface inside.
The main requirement for insulating the attic and ceiling of the house is good vapor barrier. In the absence of such moisture, which accumulates indoors, will penetrate into the insulation material. This phenomenon is explained by the difference in steam pressure inside and outside the building. Gaseous water, accumulating in the insulation layer, leads to a deterioration in the technical characteristics of the latter. As a result, over time, you have to replace the entire thermal insulation pad. In the worst case, moisture strikes wooden floors and beams of the house. They rot and lose their strength.
When organizing a vapor barrier, the presence of a ventilated gap is mandatory. After all, there is always the possibility of moisture penetrating into the upper layers of the insulating ceiling cushion. Air gap will allow the collected condensate to be removed from the heater. When the ceiling is insulated with penofol, there is no need to make a ventilation gap between it and the main layer of heat-shielding material. Penofol has a low vapor permeability. In addition, this product is coated on one side with an adhesive substance, which simplifies the installation process.
Attic insulation with penofol also has its advantages. If outdoor work is carried out, then penofol can replace the waterproofing barrier, plus additional thermal insulation of the attic space is provided. Inside the attic, penofol is installed below the insulation, protecting the latter from water vapor. The use of penofol also helps to reduce the thickness of the layer of the main thermal insulation material. For example, a layer of penofol 4 mm and mineral wool 100 mm are equivalent to a layer of mineral wool 200 mm.
Only original material can provide complete protection of the building from heat loss. How to choose the right penofol is described in the video:
Insulation of building envelopes
With external insulation, the reflective surface looks towards the street.
Thermal insulation of external walls with penofol has a number of advantages. This is an additional protection of the building from heat loss. This material is a high-quality vapor barrier on the way of gaseous water. Penofol can act as a hydrobarrier. When the house is insulated with penofol from the inside, in addition to heat-reflecting and vapor barrier properties, it performs the function of effective sound insulation.
The nuances of external insulation. Is it possible to use penofol insulation for outdoor work? The use of this material for thermal insulation of the outside of the building causes controversy among experts. Some are categorically against penofol, considering it ineffective in the fight against precipitation. Some blame the appearance of mold on the walls, the outer side of which is covered with penofol. According to the manufacturer, all of the above problems can occur if the installation is carried out incorrectly and the instructions for using foil thermal insulation are not followed.
Typical mistakes when installing penofol:
- incorrect location of the reflective surface;
- lack of a ventilated gap;
- organization of closed ventilated gaps.
So, the insulation is always laid with a reflective surface towards the heat source. That is why type C material (with an adhesive on one of its sides) is not used for external thermal insulation. In this case, penofol, foiled on both sides, is relevant. It features low thermal conductivity due to double reflection of thermal cure. This allows you to reduce the thickness of the main insulation.
The ventilation gap must be made between the finish and insulation, and not between the foam and the wall.
The second nuance is the mandatory presence of a ventilated gap. Otherwise, the walls of the house accumulate condensate in themselves. This explains the appearance of mold inside the building. The next nuance is the choice correct brand material. The wall is insulated from the outside with foam type R, which implies a relief structure of one of the foil sides. It is the relief structure that makes the thermal insulation resistant to precipitation, thereby extending its service life.
When the roof is externally insulated with penofol, this material is used both as a vapor barrier and as a hydrobarrier. Penofol fits between interior decoration attic space and the main insulation. ventilation between them. The second layer goes on top of the insulation and under the main roofing material. There must be draft inside the ventilated gaps, that is, air must enter under the cornice and exit on the ridge of the house. Only in this way can condensation be prevented, maximum thermal protection of the roof and drying of its rafters.
The feasibility of using penofol
Penofol is not only a modern thermal insulation material. It acts as a hydro and vapor barrier, significantly increases the life of the building, protecting it from the effects of precipitation. The action of penofol is based on the reflection of thermal radiation, and not in its absorption. This is what distinguishes the above product from other heaters.
Is it possible to insulate the ceiling with penofol? How effective is the use of this insulation in the attic? Penofol is versatile, and therefore suitable for thermal insulation of any part of the building. Is it possible to insulate the floor with penofol in a wooden house without disturbing the air exchange of the building? Penofl won't hurt wooden frame, if during its installation take care of the presence of ventilated gaps. They prevent the formation of condensate, contribute to the removal of excess moisture vapor to the outside of the building, and also act as additional thermal protection.
For the insulation of residential and non-residential buildings, various building materials are used. Penofol is also used as a heater. Consider what this material is, what are its advantages and disadvantages.
What it is?
Penofol is a two-layer heat-insulating building material, which can be made from one or 2 layers of foil applied to the base layer of polyethylene foam. Depending on the type of product, the density and thickness of the foam may vary. The utilitarian and inexpensive insulation is in great demand among buyers, because it has high performance characteristics.
A layer of foil, the thickness of which is 20 microns, provides penofol with excellent heat-reflecting qualities.
Such a heater is used in everyday life and industry as the main insulating material or as an auxiliary heat-insulating layer.
Penofol is used as the main insulating material in cases where it is necessary to insulate a room with normal heat loss and where there is a powerful source of heating (bath, sauna, floor heating system in a wooden house). As an additional insulating building material, penofol is used to create complex heat insulation in residential and industrial premises, while such premises must be equipped with vapor barrier and waterproofing.
Advantages and disadvantages
The use of penofol has its advantages:
- The small thickness of the material allows you to create reliable thermal insulation of the room.
- Installation of building materials does not require special skills and special tools. Working with such material is much easier than with other types of heaters.
- The material is environmentally friendly, which makes it possible to use it for food storage.
- Fire safety. This building material belongs to the class of fire-resistant materials.
- Convenience during transportation. The thickness of the product allows you to roll the insulation into a roll, which allows you to transport it in the luggage compartment of the car.
- Excellent soundproofing. Mounting penofol over the frame of building structures provides good isolation of extraneous sounds.
Penofol has not only positive qualities. There are also disadvantages of using this building material:
- The heater is soft. Because of this, this product is not suitable for finishing plastered walls. With light pressure, the material bends.
- To fix the insulation, special adhesives will be required. It is not recommended to nail it to the surface, because in this way the penofol loses its heat-insulating qualities.
What material is better?
As you know, the transfer of heat from product to product is transmitted 3 ways:
- heated air;
- thermal conductivity of materials;
- radiation - the transfer of heat from one product to another occurs with the help of electromagnetic waves of the infrared spectrum.
Consider some differences between penofol and other heat-insulating materials.
Most thermal insulation building materials ( mineral wool, isolon, penoplex, tepofol) prevent one of the types of heat transfer. hallmark foil material from other types of insulation is that it has a complex effect: polyethylene foam is an obstacle to convection, and thanks to aluminum foil, the thermal reflection index reaches 97%.
Penofol can be compared with only one group of heat-insulating materials - isolon. Comparing isolon and penofol, there is no significant difference in the quality and method of their use. To determine the winner, you need to look at the availability and price category of a particular building material. The only advantage of isolon is that the assortment has been expanded with sheet building materials, the thickness of which is from 15 to 50 mm.
Penofol is mounted with glue, and fixation of the penoplex is carried out by means of self-tapping fungi. Also, foil insulation does not accumulate heat, but rather reflects it.
Mineral wool is attached only to vertical rails. The price category of penofol is much less than that of mineral wool.

- S-03 30000x600 mm (18 sq. m);
- S-04 30000x600 mm (18m2);
- S-05 30000x600 mm (18 sq. m).
Kinds
There are 3 main types of penofol depending on the production technology, dimensions and technical characteristics:
Type A
Polymeric insulating material of various thicknesses, the foil is applied only on one side of the building material. This type of heater is popular in the complex insulation of building structures; it can also be combined with some heaters: glass wool, mineral wool.
Type B
Insulation covered with foil on both sides. Thanks to this design, the material has the maximum effect of warming.
This type of insulation is used for thermal insulation of attic load-bearing structures, waterproofing of basements, floors and walls. The foil material laid under the roof prevents heat from entering the room.
Type C
Self-adhesive penofol, which is covered with foil on one side, and on the other, a thin layer of adhesive composition coated with a film is applied to it. Depending on the dimensions of the product, it is used on almost any surface, which saves time. Before starting work this building material must be cut into strips of a certain size.
Regular penofol (types: A, B, C) has a base of white color, and for penofol 2000 it is blue.
There are several more types of penofol that are not in great demand among consumers.
Type R
One-sided insulation, which has a relief pattern on the foil side of the insulation. It is similar to type A penofol, but is mainly used as a decorative special element for interior decoration.
There is penofol without a foil coating, which does not have the appropriate type, but the builders call it a substrate for a laminate (linoleum).
This type of insulation has a low cost, and is mainly used for thermal insulation of floor special coatings.
Heaters with a narrow direction:
- ALP- material laminated with polyethylene film. It has high reflective properties. It is applied to warming of incubators.
- NET- this type of insulation is similar to type B, it is produced in narrow rolled sheets. It is used for isolation of pipelines.
A novelty in the field of manufacturing polymeric insulating materials is perforated foam. Such a building material is able to breathe, because it has a large number of micro-holes. Often used to insulate wooden structures.
Dimensions
Penofol is produced in rolls of various lengths, the maximum value of which is 30 m. The width of the web varies from 0.6 to 1.2 meters. The thickness of the material depends on the type of penofol. Standardized material thickness: 2,3,4,5,8,10 mm. In rare cases, materials with a thickness of 40 mm are made.
Foil material, whose thickness is 1 cm, has high level soundproofing and retain heat much better. Insulation with a thickness of 5 mm, which has high technical characteristics, is very popular.
Penofol is produced in rolls. The standard length of a rolled sheet depends on the thickness of the building material and is 5, 10, 15, 30, 50 m.
Application
The scope of application of penofol extends not only to internal insulation but also external. Also, this type of insulation is used for thermal insulation of residential premises, civil and industrial production:
- country house or apartment in a multi-storey building;
- roof;
- ceiling coverings;
- attics and attics;
- basement and basement structures.
- underfloor heating system (water, electric) and roof insulation;
- facades of buildings;
- water and air pipes;
- insulation of refrigeration facilities;
- ventilation and air duct system.
Sometimes foil material is pasted over the wall where the battery is located. This is done so that the heat is not absorbed by the wall, but goes inside the room.
Penofol is in great demand among motorists. With the help of such a heater, soundproofing and soundproofing of car bodies and trucks(cabin "KAMAZ").
For domestic needs, three types of penofol are used: A, B, C. The scope of this material as a heat-insulating building material is very extensive: walls, ceiling, floor, insulation of concrete surfaces, loggias, insulation of wooden and frame buildings.
Work on mounting penofol with your own hands can be done with ease without the involvement of specialists, The main thing is to follow the safety instructions.
On the floor
Before proceeding with fixing the insulation, it is necessary to prepare the base of the floor with a concrete screed. For this purpose, apply liquid solution cement, which is poured onto the surface and leveled.
The following actions are associated with the selected type of penofol:
- If penofol type A is used, then fixing glue is applied to the foam plastic in an even layer, after which the penofol is fixed.
- If type C foil material is used, no adhesive is applied. This type of material is already equipped with an adhesive solution on the back of the building material. To prevent the waterproof adhesive solution from drying out prematurely, it must be covered with polyethylene. Before starting work, the plastic film is carefully removed, and then the foil material is laid out on the foam.
The building material is laid in such a way that the foil overlaps the walls (about 5 cm), and the resulting joints are glued with aluminum insulating tape.
It is necessary to lay the insulation with the foil side from the floor, i.e. inside the room. This will ensure reliable noise and vapor barrier of the material. Upon completion of the installation, the protruding parts of the foil are carefully cut off with a mounting blade.
When installing a warm floor system, there are 2 main types of installation: the use of a log or a concrete screed. Logs are used if a wooden floor will be mounted on top of the insulation. In this case wooden logs installed along the floor over the heating elements.
The horizontal mounting of the beams must be controlled using the building level. Then a mount is performed on top of the lag wood flooring. Thus, the foil material will heat up and give off heat from below to the wooden coverings.
The second variation is to mount the underfloor heating system under the tiles. In this case, the heating special elements are covered reinforced mesh and filled with concrete. For this type of installation it is necessary to use foam type ALP.
for walls
For warming internal walls type B foil material is used. Its installation is more complicated, unlike other types of penofol, but this insulating material is able to create the most effective thermal insulation of the room.
To improve sound and heat insulation, ventilation gaps are made between the wall and the insulation. Insulation with one-sided foiling is easily glued to the wall or heavy insulation material (styrofoam).
Material with a double-sided metallic special coating is mounted as follows:
- Using dowels, you need to fix the bars on concrete wall(thickness 1-2 cm).
- A layer of foam type B is mounted on them using screws or mounting brackets.
- A plasterboard product is laid on top of the insulating building material, which is fixed to the rails with self-tapping screws. In order to leave gaps for ventilation, they are installed on top of the insulating material wooden bars, the thickness of which is similar to the previous rails. Then the drywall is fixed.
To avoid drafts, the joints of the foil product must be glued with a damper tape. Instead, you can use penofol, which is cut into strips of the required width.
For ceiling
Insulation of ceilings inside the room begins with fixing a thin layer of foil material on the base coat. Screwed onto the primary insulating layer wooden slats, which are the frame for the main insulating building material. On top of the rails, the main heat-insulating layer is fixed by means of a construction stapler or screws. If it is necessary to install a third layer of insulation, then its installation is carried out similarly to the previous variation.
To create conditions for decorating the building, drywall is installed on the last layer of insulation. Do not forget to treat the joints of the material with silicone adhesive or construction tape.
For balconies, loggias
After a careful study of the technology of insulation of ceilings, walls and floors, the implementation of thermal insulation in rooms such as a balcony will not cause difficulties. In this case, the material must be laid on the rafters, and the fastening should be carried out using brackets. The main thing is that the insulating material for the balcony does not have a lot of weight, otherwise an accident may occur.
Use in a wooden room
The technology of mounting penofol is no different from other types of heaters. But it is necessary to take into account the fact that fixing penofol on wooden surfaces both outside and inside, performed only in summer time, and it is desirable that several hot days pass before starting work.
It is impossible to insulate the building if the tree is saturated with moisture and swelled. After installing the insulation layer, moisture will remain inside, which will lead to rotting of wooden materials.
What to glue?
Correctly chosen adhesive solution for foil material is not yet a guarantee of a successful installation. For high-quality connection of materials, it is necessary that the surface to be glued be carefully prepared. All defects, irregularities, various debris must be eliminated.
To improve adhesion, materials made of metal, concrete and wood can be treated with a special primer solution.
Concrete floors and walls are leveled, cracks are sealed, and metal products are treated with an anti-corrosion agent.
Glue for foil insulation can be both specialized and universal. You can also use liquid nails, double-sided tape, a thin layer polyurethane foam. The choice of adhesive depends entirely on the purpose of the surface and its further use.
The adhesive composition must correspond to the performance of the insulating material:
- permission for indoor use;
- the toxicity of the solution should be equal to 0;
- high sticking resistance;
- the adhesive must withstand temperatures in the range of -60 to +100 degrees.
If the insulation is performed from the outside, then the adhesive solution must be resistant to water vapor and liquids.
In order for the penofol to be securely glued to the surface, the adhesive must be applied to the side that does not have a foil layer. The adhesive solution is applied evenly, without gaps. The edges of the panel are carefully coated with glue so that the foil material does not peel off during operation.
Before proceeding with fixing the penofol, you need to wait 5-60 seconds for the glue to dry slightly. This ensures better adhesion to the products. Penofol is pressed to the surface, holding, smoothed with special care.
If the insulation is glued in pieces, then the joints are additionally glued.
The time of the Stone Age and wigwams has been erased by millennia of technological progress. People began to insulate their homes from the moment they had insulating materials. At first, materials of plant and animal origin were mainly used as insulation. Those days are long gone, and technology has made it possible to use synthetic materials without harm to human health. Scientific research in the area building materials led to the invention various kinds heaters. One of them is a material called Penofol.
What is Penofol?
Penofol is a heat-insulating material of the latest generation. This multi-layer reflective thermal insulation consists of two or three layers: the main component is foamed polyethylene, the role of the second layer on one side or on both sides is pure aluminum foil. According to its technical properties, aluminum is a metal with low thermal conductivity and with a reflection effect, and reflection increases the thermal protection of any structure.
Penofol combines the thermal insulation properties of air bubbles, which are “pressed” into polyethylene foam by the self-extinguishing method, and the reflective abilities of the aluminum coating, in this case, heat is retained up to 95%. Therefore, the material stops heat loss in three possible ways: radiation, thermal conductivity and convection.
Main properties, characteristics and scope
Penofol perfectly performs the role of a vapor and heat insulator, and all this is due to its technical properties. This material can be used without any restrictions for work inside residential premises, as it is environmentally impeccable. In addition to the main protective properties, it has no less impressive hydro, sound and wind insulation properties.
Retains its technical properties in the temperature range from - 65°C to + 110°C.
The use of thin aluminum foil as an outer layer makes it possible to obtain an almost complete reflection of thermal energy, with a heat reflection coefficient of up to 98%.
Thermal conductivity, depending on the types of material, and there are three of them: type A, B and C, ranges from 0.037 to 0.052 W / m ° C and the stability of these digital parameters depends on three physical states:
- in dry form from a temperature of 20°C,
- from operating conditions A at a temperature of 20 ° C,
- from operating conditions B at 20°C.
What are types of Penofol A, B and C
- type A - with aluminum foil foiling on only one side of the product
- type B - with foil coating on both sides of the foamed polyethylene
- type C - with polyethylene foam foiling on one side only and a layer of self-adhesive material.
Another important property of the product is small specific gravity from 44 +/- 10* kg/sq.m. up to 74 + / - 10 *, these data correspond to a thickness of 4 mm.
The compressive strength of Penofol, regardless of the thickness and type of coating, is not less than 0.035 MPa.
All these properties made it possible thermal insulation material Penofol take its rightful place not only in the construction industry, but also in the domestic sphere. It is used as a heat insulator in residential, industrial and other types of buildings for insulation of ceilings, roofs, floors and walls.
Given the scope of application - inside and outside of structures, it is simply an ideal product for thermal insulation application. At the same time, the small thickness and weight at high rates of thermal protection make it possible to reduce the lost volume of the insulated room and not to clutter up the framework of structures with excess weight.
ATTENTION! To get the maximum effect from the use of a heat insulator, the following rule should be observed during its installation: on both sides there should be an air space fifteen to twenty millimeters thick.
The use of the material in baths and saunas can significantly reduce the time of heating the room to the required temperature and increase the period of maintaining the temperature of the created microclimate.
Penofol release form
The material is produced in the form of a canvas, rolls of fifteen meters.
The thickness of the produced foil cloth is from 4mm to 15mm.
Depending on the structure of the foamed polyethylene and the number of reflective layers of aluminum foil, there are several modifications of the heat insulator Penofol.
Penofol modifications
Using a knife, the rolled heat-insulating material is cut into individual parts and then assembled into a finished system. The joints are glued with sealant and then reinforced with aluminum tape. All mating parts are also made in the same way. Penofol can insulate the most complex structures where conventional insulation is not possible to work. This gives good savings when using it for these types of work.
All the above data show that Penofol is in demand modern material for indoor insulation work.
Thermal insulation materials are widely used for insulation of various elements of buildings. Penofol is often used as a heater. It not only helps to prevent heat loss, but also reduces the absorption of moisture, and also protects the room from noise.
Description and technical characteristics of penofol
Foil penofol refers to reflective thermal insulation. It should be noted that all the pores of the material are closed, and polished foil is located on one side. Due to this, the product has increased heat saving performance. Separately, it is necessary to mention the hydro and vapor barrier characteristics. These properties make it possible to reduce the cost of insulation and speed up construction work.
There are several varieties material:
- penofol A: this material is used to insulate walls and various engineering systems;
- penofol B: a product in which the foil is located on both sides, is intended for insulation of interfloor ceilings, as well as various partitions;
- penofol C: this variety has a layer of glue on one side and a foil on the other, thanks to which penofol C is optimally suited for installation in hard-to-reach places under adverse conditions.
It is worth mentioning the main specifications this heater:
- thermal reflection 95–97%;
- thermal conductivity coefficient 0.37–0.51 depending on the variety;
- water absorption 0.3–0.7% of the total volume;
- possibility of use at temperatures from -60˚С to +100˚С.
Advantages and disadvantages
Many people prefer the foil penofol shown in the photo because of the large list of its advantages.
Naturally, in foil penofol there are a number of shortcomings.
- The material is not strong enough. For this reason, it cannot be finished with plaster or wallpaper.
- Some people use staples to fix the insulation, however, in this case, the thermal insulation characteristics of the material may deteriorate. Accordingly, for fixing it is worth choosing a special glue. Alternatively, you can purchase a roll of penofol, which has a self-adhesive base.
- To really avoid heat loss, it is recommended to combine penofol with other heaters.
Application
Due to its versatility, the material is suitable for thermal insulation of apartments in multi-storey buildings, country cottages and small summer houses. It can also be office centers, industrial premises, hospitals, baths, warehouses and trade kiosks. In addition, with the help of penofol isolate the wagons, shield heating radiators and wrap ventilation or water pipes.
The material is used alone or combined with other materials. Thanks to this insulation, it will be possible to insulate the walls, ceiling and floor. Many professionals use foil foam to process air ducts, as well as hoods.
When using penofol, special equipment is not needed, which is an important advantage. You can also work at any time of the year. In order for the insulation to keep well and not lose its characteristics, it is important follow simple guidelines.
Penofol recognized as an excellent thermal insulator. It can be safely combined with other heaters and installed without the help of professionals. Such a finish will help maintain an optimal microclimate in the room for a long time.
