A photo
Restoring a coffee table on your own is a rather painstaking, but not very difficult task. If you become familiar with the technology, take into account the advice of experts, acquire quality materials you can give your favorite thing a second life.
Table painting is a very complex and lengthy process, but all you need is a sketch, a marker or paint, and varnish.
Alteration of furniture consists of several stages: removal of old varnish, restoration of a wooden surface, painting or tinting, varnishing (waxing).
How to get rid of the old coating?
You will need:
- cycler or grinder;
- sandpaper;
- putty on wood;
- putty knife.
Restoration of a coffee table begins with the removal of old varnish. The easiest way is to use a grinder, but in this case, maximum care should be taken, as the tool can damage wooden surface. You can use special solvents. Here it is important to calculate the thickness of the layer: the product should only dissolve the varnish, without reaching the tree. If the solvent is absorbed into the surface of the coffee table, then this will complicate all subsequent steps, the materials may not “make friends” with each other, as a result of which swelling, peeling or cracking of the paintwork will occur.
The main materials and tools for decorating a coffee table are: acrylic paint, brushes, glue and pictures.
If the old varnish has many cracks and is worn off in places, then it is easy to remove it with ordinary sandpaper. Take medium-grained paper, moisten it, wrap it around the bar, walk over the surface. When the sandpaper becomes clogged with dust, rinse it in water and get back to work. Under the influence of moisture, the old varnish will soften and be easily cleaned off. After you remove the varnish, sand the surface of the coffee table with fine grit sandpaper. You can clean off the old coating with a scraper or a piece broken glass. In this case, you can not do without work gloves. The varnish gradually chipped off the surface, while care must be taken not to damage the wood. All of these methods have their advantages and disadvantages. Which one to choose is up to you.
After the old varnish has been removed, it is necessary to putty all cracks, chips and scratches. Putty is applied with a spatula, leveled so that it does not protrude above the surface, left to dry completely, then sanded with fine sandpaper. If you plan to tint the table with a stain, then it is better to purchase putty to match the color of the wood.
Toning and painting a coffee table
You will need:
Decorating the table with a mosaic allows you to hide the cracks and stains that have appeared.
- primer;
- acrylic paint or stain;
- furniture wax;
- brushes;
- sandpaper.
Restoration of a coffee table involves painting or toning the product with a stain (wax). First you need to prime the surface: use a special primer for wood, apply the composition with a brush in 1-2 layers with obligatory intermediate drying. If you use a stain, then the priming step can be omitted.
The paint is applied with a brush, for countertops it is more convenient to use a roller or a paint spatula. Hard to reach places painted over with a thin brush. It is important to apply the paint in a thin, even layer - then you can avoid sagging. After the first layer dries, go over it with fine sandpaper. The second time the paint is applied in the opposite direction. All colorful layers must be sanded with sandpaper - then the surface will turn out perfectly smooth, and the stripes from the brush will be invisible.
Restoration of the table can be done with a stain or colored wax. Stain is water-based and alcohol-based, the former gives a softer tone. The stain is applied wide flat brush(flute). You can mix colors with each other, apply one tone to another, brighten the center, darken the edges - it all depends on your imagination. Instead of stain, you can use colored wax, which, when restoring the surface, performs several roles at once. With its help, toning and fixing the result are performed at the same time. When using bituminous wax over the stain, you can achieve a depth of color.
Wax is rubbed with a soft cotton cloth in a very thin layer, while you can not return to the treated area, otherwise dark places may turn out. Some manufacturers recommend melting the wax in a water bath for a large amount of work, in which case it is applied with a brush. After the first layer dries, it is polished with a woolen cloth, then the next one is applied. This is done until the surface is perfectly smooth. If you painted the table with acrylic paint, then it is better to use transparent furniture wax to fix the result.
Decorating a coffee table with gilding
You will need:
- gold or silver potal;
- shellac;
- stencil;
- flat brush.
You can decorate a coffee table with sweat, for example, make golden butterflies or silver dragonflies. For this purpose, you need to purchase a ready-made stencil or make it yourself. On a thick film, draw the outline of a dragonfly, then cut it out with a blade or a thin knife. Attach the stencil to the surface of the table with masking tape. Apply shellac, leave it for a while. The varnish should dry a little, but at the same time remain sticky - then the potal will stick well.
Attach the sweat sheet to the stencil, gently smooth it with a brush, leave it to dry completely, then brush off the remaining gold with a brush, remove the stencil. You can muffle the bright sheen of sweat with the help of antique bitumen, which is applied with a thin layer of foam sponge. The result is fixed with shellac.
In no case should the potal be covered with acrylic varnish, otherwise it will oxidize over time.
Materials for gilding are an expensive pleasure, if desired, they can be replaced with transfer foil for nails and special glue for the body. The application technology is almost the same: first a stencil is attached, the surface is smeared with glue, left for about 5 minutes (the exact time is always indicated on the attached instructions). Then the foil is applied with the rough side down, smoothed with a fingernail, sharply torn off. The result is fixed with an aerosol varnish - then the foil will not wrinkle. As seen from practice table restoration process does not tolerate fuss. A lot of time can pass between the start of work and the receipt of the finished result. But if you approach the matter with all responsibility and thoroughness, your table will turn out no worse than a new one.
Probably many people have an old dining room at home. round table, which, due to its quality factor, is a pity to throw out and in a conspicuous place because of bad looking you won't put. So he stands idle somewhere in the closet or in the attic. In this article we want to show you that an old dining table can also get new life. The main thing is to want, have a little patience, and you will understand that the restoration of a round table with your own hands is quite possible.
Consider the restoration process using the example of an old round wooden table.
First of all, we inspect the table and determine the defects. On our table, for example, there are scratches and cracks. Also, the lacquer layer is outdated, and in some places it has worn off and needs updating. The whole legs do not stagger, so we will not disassemble it.
If your legs dining table shattered, they need to be put in order.
In the case of fastening the legs with screws, you just need to tighten the screws. If the legs are attached to the table with glue and stagger a lot, you will have to disassemble the table, clean all the connections, apply a new layer of glue, reassemble all the parts, fix the table with clamps and leave for a day until the glue dries completely.
grinding
On the next step restoration we will grind the table. For grinding, we need a sandpaper of different grit numbers, and a grinder will make our work easier.
If you don't have grinder must be sanded by hand. Although it is more difficult and longer, it is possible.
So, we take the machine with the sandpaper of the greatest grain size and pass over the surface of the table. Grind gently without strong pressure. For better removal of varnish and leveling the surface after grinding with coarse sandpaper, you need to use a sandpaper of a smaller grain size. And again, carefully grind the surface of the table. In the case of curved parts, they will have to be sanded by hand.
If, after two times grinding, irregularities or old varnish remain on the round table, you will have to grind a third time with zero grit sandpaper. After sanding, it is important to remove all dust from the surface of the dining table. To do this, use a vacuum cleaner and a damp cloth.
putty
In case of severe scratches or dents that have not been removed after grinding, the damaged areas must be puttied. With a rubber spatula, apply putty to the scratches.
After the putty dries, and this is about 30 minutes, we grind the smeared places with a zero sandpaper.
gentrification
At this stage of the restoration, we proceed to painting. For painting, we chose water-based stain and varnish, because they do not have a strong odor and such materials can be used in residential areas. We will also need brushes.
Stain can cover a round table in one or several layers, depending on what color we need at the output. After each new layer, the color of the table will become deeper. Also, after each application of the stain, you need to wait until it dries completely (the time is written in the instructions for paints and varnishes), and only then apply the next layer.
When we got the color we need, we proceed to apply varnish. We apply it carefully, without haste. We collect a small amount of varnish on the brush so that there are no smudges. Leave the painted table to dry completely, for about a day.
After the first application of varnish on the surface of the table, a pile may rise, these are small particles of wood. Therefore, the table must be sanded with a sandpaper zero.
Grinding is better by hand, not pressing hard. Then we proceed to apply the second layer of varnish. Again, leave the table to dry completely.
Dry in a well ventilated area. At home, it can be a terrace, a balcony, a summer kitchen. The main thing is that water does not get on the surface.
Well, our round table after restoration is ready. And he looks much better. Such a table is not even ashamed to put in the living room. And, most importantly, we carried out all the repair work at home with our own hands. minimal cost from the family budget.
Loose legs, damage to the table top in the kitchen or in the living room are not uncommon. Over time, the fasteners weaken, and due to accidental mechanical damage, the surface may get cracked, chipped or worn. You can restore the attractiveness and integrity of the furniture, you can carry out a high-quality restoration of the table with your own hands. Below in detailed master classes we told how to restore a plastic, wooden (varnished or painted) and glass table. Having studied the exact instructions, you can easily carry out the work and, moreover, it is interesting to decorate old table to give it a new look. No special tools are needed for restoration: almost all of them can be found in the arsenal of a modern owner. But for restoration and decoration, you will need to separately select special materials and compositions.
Restoration methods
Define best option table restoration will be helped by familiarization with modern methods of its repair, as well as the view obtained after processing. You can cover items like this:
- Using conventional brushes (to create a perfectly even surface or create a smooth transition from one color to another by mixing paints directly on the countertop with a small brush).
- Through nets, tulle, stencils (to obtain patterns and stylized spots on the surface).
- Craquelure compositions (allows for antique styling, to give the surface the appearance of cracked paint).
You can also wrap tables. different types films, pasting paper materials. All of the above options are more applicable to wooden furniture, but some of them are also suitable for the restoration of plastic products.
The main stages of the restoration of a wooden table
Restoration of a table natural wood requires a careful approach to each stage of recovery. This is the only way to do the work with your own hands correctly and return the furniture to its original appearance (or even make it better). Direct restoration is carried out according to the following scheme:
- Selection of the necessary materials and tools (working with everything ready will be much easier than buying the necessary materials during the restoration process).
- Carrying out the primary repair of the entire structure (this stage concerns the restoration of the integrity of the product: for example, for a dining table, the work will consist in repairing the frame, for writing - in repairing the frame, shelves, drawers).
- Removal of old coating, restoration of wood.
- Primary processing and decoration of furniture.
- The final stage for the auxiliary protection of the created decor.
All of these steps will be appropriate for minor damage to old tables. If large cracks appeared on the surface of the countertop or the edges of the array began to break off and crumble, then the work will take much longer and may not bring the desired result.
Necessary materials and tools
To safely and properly restore an old table, you will need to prepare the following tools and materials:
- Protective equipment (glasses, mask, gloves).
- Sandpaper (fine + coarse) or grinder (with fine and coarse abrasive wheels).
- Painting tools (brushes, rollers).
- Protective compositions for wood (high-quality impregnation to protect wood from moisture, decay, pests, blueing).
- Coloring and auxiliary compositions (selected paint for repainting wooden furniture or stain, primer, varnish).
- Fasteners and tools for repairing an old table (screwdriver, screwdriver, self-tapping screws and screws, liquid nails, furniture glue).
Finishing can be carried out not only with varnish, but also with wax. The advantage of this composition is the ease of recovery: a scratched area just needs to be re-treated with wax.
preliminary repair
Carrying out the primary repair involves restoring the strength of the entire structure of the table. Therefore, you need to start recovery by identifying problem areas. For example, at a table with loose legs, they should be removed, inspect the attachment points ( common cause this phenomenon are considered chips on the thread). If necessary, damaged areas should be glued with furniture glue. If the problem is the drying of the glue with which the individual parts were glued together (for example, in the area of the dowels connecting the legs and the shelf of the coffee table), then you should remove old glue and plant the details on liquid nails. In the case of transforming dining tables, it may be necessary to restore the table height adjustment mechanism. Usually the problem with the poor running of the mechanism is solved by simply cleaning the parts and lubricating them.
Removing the old coating
When the primary repair has been carried out, and the furniture has been restored to its former strength and reliability, you can begin to remove the old coating. Work can be done in several ways:
- Mechanical.
In this case, the cleaning of old varnish and paint is carried out using abrasive sandpaper or a grinder. Initially, a rough cleaning is carried out: peeling pieces of varnish and paint are cleaned with coarse or medium-grained sandpaper. Then, with a finely abrasive sandpaper, a more accurate removal of residues is carried out. The main thing is not to overdo it in work and not remove upper layer tree.
- Chemical.
Exist special formulations designed to remove old varnish and paint from wood. They are applied with a brush on the furniture. Then, after 20-30 minutes, they are removed with a brush (already together with the corroded old coating).
Remove dust from the cleaned wood and treat it with antiseptic impregnation. Drying of the impregnation is usually about 24 hours. Such work should be carried out both for furniture made of natural wood, and for products made of chipboard, MDF.
Repair of cracks and chips
In order to qualitatively repair the table, and not just refresh it, you should take care of competently getting rid of chips and cracks. To work, you will need a brush, wood putty (preferably as close as possible in color to the color of the wood), fine abrasive sandpaper. The following master class will help to carry out the work correctly:
- From damaged areas (chips and cracks), carefully sweep the dust. If pre-treatment with an antiseptic was carried out, then this work can be omitted.
- Using a soft rubber spatula, "close" chips and cracks with wood filler. It is necessary to invest the composition as deeply as possible in order to completely close the formed recesses.
- Carefully remove excess putty: level the surface of the areas to be restored.
- After the putty has dried, go over the treated areas with fine abrasive sandpaper.
Preparation for finishing: priming
Before decorating the restored table and decorating it, the surface should be primed. This requirement applies to both the countertop and the frame itself. To work, you will need a shellac, acrylic or alkyd primer: they are suitable for covering wood. Direct priming is carried out as follows:
- A small amount of primer is applied to the surface of the table (processing is initially carried out in sections), distributed rubber spatula. It is advisable to distribute the composition as carefully as possible in order to obtain an even layer. After covering individual sections, you need to align all the transitions so that there are no drops.
- After the first coat has dried (usually takes 1 to 6 hours), apply the second coat and wait for it to dry.
- On top of the dried primer, carry out grinding for high-quality leveling of the surface and the elimination of any differences.
Ways to give the final decor
Unusually, you can paint or decorate a table without the involvement of specialists - with your own hands. This work can be done in different ways:
- normal coloring;
It is carried out using paint on wood and a brush. The composition is evenly distributed over all surfaces.
- staining with curly rollers;
For coloring, you will need paint on wood and a roller, on the surface of which there are three-dimensional patterns. The application of paint is carried out in one motion, then the roller is rearranged to its width.
- decoupage;
Decoupage glue is applied to the surface of the table, prepared paper elements (solid sheets or cut out elements) are glued.
- dyeing through tulle;
Over a prepared surface (simply primed or painted with White color) unfold ironed tulle. Spray paint is sprayed on top. The tulle is carefully removed so that the pattern is not smeared.
- staining through a stencil;
A stencil is made from cardboard (or a ready-made one is bought). The stencil is applied to the table, and the tabletop is painted through the cut out template. A popular option for highlighting the perimeter, corners or center of a table.
- multicolor staining.
Several paints with similar colors are used (for example, from light to dark). Paints different colors applied broad stripes. Then, with a brush, smooth transitions are carefully made between them.
Final coating with varnish or wax
To fix the result of decoration and additionally protect the table from damage, moisture will help its finishing - with varnish or wax. Modern varnishes have fairly good wear resistance, and can be used for coffee tables (which are rarely used) and kitchen tables (which are used daily). Wax provides the most reliable protection, so it is mostly used for processing tables in the kitchen. Lacquer is applied with a brush in 1 layer. The drying time of the composition depends on its characteristics and characteristics (it may take 18-36 hours for complete drying). Wax paste is applied with a swab or a dense brush. Liquid wax is distributed with a brush over the entire surface of the table (tabletop, legs). Hard wax is melted before application, then spread with a brush (“rubbed” into the surface). But keep in mind that hard wax may include chemical additives.
What material to glue
If painting the table after restoration is not suitable, you should pay attention to modern ways pasting furniture. These include:
- Film wrapping.
The film is peeled off from the paper base and applied (glued to the table). It is necessary to gradually separate the film and additionally iron its glued parts (for example, with a rubber spatula) to remove bubbles. Along the edge of the tabletop, you can additionally blow the film with a hairdryer for better fixation and also iron it.
- Decor countertops with tape.
Decorative adhesive tape of different colors can be glued to the tabletop in strips, forming squares. From above, you can additionally glue a transparent film (according to the example indicated above) for reliable protection tape from damage and peeling.
- Pasting the tabletop with stickers.
Ordinary stickers in the form of patterns, animals, flowers or products are great for table decor. They should be glued to a previously degreased surface of the countertop. Additional protection is not needed for the stickers: they stick quite well and can be easily removed if necessary.
Methods for restoring a glass table
The glass table, even with very careful operation, can be covered with scratches, “scuffs”. Especially if it is included in the lunch group and is used daily. On your own, with minor damage to the countertop, you can restore the glass surface using the following compositions:
- colorless (transparent) varnish: due to penetration into cracks, it will somewhat level the surface, but is a temporary solution and requires very careful application;
- GOI paste: allows you to get rid of minor scratches, before use it is heated according to the instructions on the package and then rubbed into the damaged areas with gentle circular movements;
- soda: diluted to a mushy state and, in a similar way, like GOI paste, rubbed into damaged parts;
- toothpaste (not gel): with its help, the tabletop is polished, due to which the shine returns to the glass, and micro-scratches and scuffs disappear.
In the presence of large chips and cracks, it is recommended to completely replace the countertop yourself or hand it over to specialists for repair. A detached frame can be easily restored by carefully removing dried glue and applying a new adhesive composition. Loose screws in case of screwing the countertop to the frame are recommended to be replaced with new ones.
How to update a plastic table
Majority plastic furniture over time, it loses its original attractiveness, even if used at home (not on a balcony or country house) conditions. For example, due to minor mechanical damage, it can become covered with scratches, scuffs. But constant exposure to sunlight can cause the plastic to burn out, yellowing it. You can update these tables in two ways:
- Repainting.
The best option for products with flat countertops. Initially, the plastic surface is treated with fine abrasive sandpaper, then degreased, coated with a primer. The final step will be the coating of the product with spray paint.
- Decoupage.
The best solution for tables with curly ledges or recesses. Initially, with the help of finely abrasive sandpaper, the entire countertop, frame is cleaned. Then degreased. Napkins (or paper, thin newspaper) selected for decoration are glued onto decoupage glue. After the glue dries, the product is covered with a transparent varnish.
Ideas to update your coffee table
To update the look of a coffee table, it is not at all necessary to completely repaint it. You can simply highlight its individual parts or emphasize its shape. To the most interesting options relate:
- Pasting with a custom sticker.
Under the size of a rectangular table, you can order a sticker with the image of a cassette (for a round one you can have a vinyl record, for an oval one - a cut pear or melon). Stick the image on the cleaned surface.
- Staining with stain.
The variety of wood stains allows you to completely change the color of wood, make it brighter or darker, or completely lighten it. Staining under the patina of protruding elements, carved decorations will help to complement this decor. For work, it is recommended to take gold or bronze paint.
- Decor craquelure.
Remodeling the antique table will completely change its appearance. Initially, it should be painted in a color that will help highlight the veins. It is not necessary to decorate it with "cracks". You just need to apply craquelure varnish, which will ensure the appearance of these cracks.
How to update a countertop
A separate update of the tabletop and decorating it with decor allows you to give even a very old table an original design look. The most interesting options for this design include:
- Laying out the mosaic.
A mosaic is laid out on a cleaned surface, on a special solution, thereby forming patterns or an abstract pattern. Then the seams between the mosaic are overwritten.
- Decor with ceramic tiles.
For large tables, you can use not only a small mosaic, but also large tiles. The work is carried out in a similar way, but the finished decor will have a certain pattern (or be monophonic).
- "Picture" under glass (for rectangular and square countertops).
A frame made of timber is stuffed or glued around the perimeter of the tabletop. Sand is poured inside the frame and shells are laid out (another option is to lay out photos, letters). Glass is placed on top of the frame.

Table top decoration
There are many ways to update a table. To change its design, it is enough to decorate the countertop. It is a detail of the table, the first striking, and the overall impression of the interior of the room largely depends on its appearance.
The easiest way to decorate is to repaint it. A more complex option is surface painting. You can imitate it by applying the decoupage technique. Inexperienced craftsmen can also use a similar method of finishing countertops.
Ways to transform the table
Before starting the restoration of the table, it is better to study the ways to restore it and choose the least expensive and simplest technology. Methods for updating a wooden table and furniture made from wood-based materials do not always coincide. General rule for all types of countertop decoration is the preparation of the surface for finishing. Any coating must be in reliable contact with it.
Self-adhesive film - the laziest way
Reworking an old table with your own hands can be done using a self-adhesive film. It imitates a mosaic surface, stone, wood structure, etc. The film can be used to change the design of a recently purchased countertop. Applying the material to the prepared surface takes several minutes.
The base under the film should be as smooth as possible. This method of decoration is best used when finishing lacquered surfaces and countertops made of laminated chipboard. It is desirable that they do not have chips, cracks and swelling. To veneer the countertop, you need to do the following:
- Stick the film on a cleaned, fat-free, dry surface, gradually freeing it from the protective layer and spreading it over the plane with a soft cloth. It is important to avoid the formation of wrinkles and air bubbles.
- Remove small swellings by piercing the film with a thin needle.
The material is easy to cut, because marking lines are applied on its back side. The size of the film coating is made slightly larger than the dimensions of the countertop. In this case, the film can be tucked under it. The ends of the decorated board are often covered with melamine, PVC or ABS edging tape.
A damaged substrate needs to be repaired before the film is applied. Irregularities must be puttied, sanded and primed, however, surface uniformity after such work is not easy to achieve. An additional application of paint and varnish will help to align it.
Decoupage: a new look from napkins
The original countertop will turn out if its design is changed using the decoupage technique. In the restoration of the table, decoupage napkins are used. A wide range of such products is available today.
Before updating the table, the top and side surfaces of the tabletop are freed from the old coating. Varnish, paint, drawings, etc. can be removed with a grinder. Then the base is cleaned with fine-grained sandpaper. When creating a background for the selected pattern, an acrylic primer and acrylic paints are used. The coating must be applied in 2-3 layers in order to smooth the surface as best as possible. After drying, each layer is sanded and sanded. Then they do this:
- the napkin is released from the protective layer;
- its front side is applied to a plastic film or file, leveled and moistened with water from a spray bottle.
- the pattern is pressed against the base and leveled by moving the roller over the film, preventing the formation of bubbles and wrinkles;
- it is carefully removed, and the tabletop with images is covered with decoupage glue or PVA;
- varnish is applied to the dried surface.
In decoration, the blend is often combined with craquelure. This technique allows you to give the table an antique look. A simple finish looks like this:
- The prepared countertop is evenly covered with a layer of water-based (acrylic) paint. It is applied with a flat brush.
- A layer of PVA glue is also applied and dried.
- Paint contrasting with the first layer is applied and dried with a hair dryer. Hot air will crack the coating.
- Decoupage napkins are applied to the surface. The tabletop is varnished at least twice with a colorless varnish. Each next layer is applied after the varnish has dried in the previous one.
Tile decoration
Do-it-yourself restoration of an old table in the kitchen can be done with ceramic tiles, mosaics or porcelain stoneware. The surface of the tabletop will become watertight, but a heavier table will need a strong support. It is better to replace the chipboard base or cover it with a sheet of OSB or plywood.
A reinforcing mesh is applied to the primed plane. An adhesive is applied to it. After laying the tiles, the seams are overwritten. The decoration is completed by finishing the ends with plastic or wooden planks.

Painting is not only done by artists. It is permissible to apply drawings to the countertop using stencils and an airbrush. You can paint both unpainted wood and a surface covered with paint and varnish material. In painting it is better to use acrylic paints.
Painting in different colors
In a similar decoration method, you can use paint, fragments of self-adhesive film and decorative tape. They create a multi-colored surface of thin parallel stripes.
When painting, it is recommended to use masking tape. Tape can mark the boundaries of areas of a particular color or protect them from unwanted ingress of paint of a different shade. The final leveling of the surface is achieved with a colorless acrylic varnish.
