We install interior doors on our own: step by step instructions. Assembling and installing a door frame, hanging an interior door with your own hands Do-it-yourself building a house door installation
Doing the installation of an interior door on your own is not a difficult job. Below is a simple step by step diagram, starting from choosing the interior door you like in the store and ending with self-installation interior doors with step by step photos.
Interior doors can be divided into several types
On the market, manufacturers of door structures offer a fairly wide range of models. Finished interior doors can be made of different materials. The most common types of materials are:,,.
1. fiberboard - door: the frame is made of wood, and sheathed with fiberboard sheets with lamination. The advantages of such doors include: low cost relative to other types, low weight, which makes it possible to deliver them from the point of sale to the house on their own, ease of installation. Given these points, they are popular among buyers, so that their wide range is most often presented in stores.
Of the minuses, one can note the low strength of the fiberboard itself, which is why the door breaks and becomes unusable quite easily, poor resistance to moisture, the door can twist. Therefore, we do not recommend its installation in bathrooms with weak ventilation, this material loves dry rooms.
2. MDF - doors, which are made from this type of material are the most suitable option when choosing the ratio of quality and price. Clear advantages compared to fiberboard doors - high strength and resistance to moisture, more high level soundproofing. The cost of such a door is several times higher than doors made of fiberboard.

3. natural wood- Interior doors made of this material are the most durable. Their price directly depends on what kind of wood was used for their production. doors from valuable breeds wood are used for installation in rooms with the author's design, they will perfectly fit into classic interior. The width of the interior doors is selected according to the size of your opening.

The list of interior doors by type can be supplemented with steel ones, but these types are not very popular among the general population, so they are not included in the article for a detailed description.

Types of door frames for interior doors
The right interior door should be in a reliable box for the door, because its quality will depend on how long the door will last, as well as the design of the doorway of your room. Door frames can be divided into three main types.
1. Fiberboard box. It looks pretty decent, but when choosing a box made of this material, the strength of the entire structure will be questionable. The middle of the box bar sags from its own weight, not to mention the possible deflections from the weight of the door leaf itself. Since the main components in fiberboard, to put it simply, are glue and paper, it must be borne in mind that they are very fragile and not durable. It is not recommended to hang wooden and MDF doors on them because of their heavy weight.
Photo - Fiberboard box
2. Raw wood box. The cost is at the level of fiberboard boxes, but unlike the latter, boxes made from dry profiled timber have a higher strength. Therefore, when choosing between fiberboard boxes and raw wood boxes, we recommend choosing the latter. You also need to consider that you will need additional materials for the final finishing of the box.
Photo - Raw wooden box
3. Laminated wood box. It does not require final finishing, as it is already laminated with paper. And there's one here important point, when choosing such a box, the quality of lamination is very important. If thin paper was used for this, there is a high probability of scuffs, scratches, cracks, the coating loses its appearance. Perhaps a better option would be a box made of raw wood with self-finishing and painting.
Photo - Laminated wooden box
Also, the entire doorway of the interior door may require additional processing after the doors are installed. Everything will whistle from your opening, its size, the location of the door in it, the interior of the room.
For such processing, you can use an additional bar and platbands. Required kits can be purchased at the store. We recommend that you decide on their need after the final installation of the door in order to understand what kind of final finish you need. After all, the purchase additional materials These are additional costs that may not be necessary in the end.
An example door is considered with a fiberboard frame. If you need to install wooden boxes, you need to work on the same steps. Installation will be easier, as wood is stronger than fiberboard.
Step 1. Choice tools and necessary additional consumables. For installation you will need:
- saw;
- electric drill ();
- drills 3 mm and 4 mm for wood;
- drills 4 mm and 6 mm for concrete;
- screwdriver;
- roulette;
- a pen;
- wood screws;
- fast mounting dowels;
- mounting foam.
Step 2. We determine the scheme for fixing the box in the doorway of the interior door.
Photo - Fastener scheme door frame in the opening
The figure shows the scheme of fixing the door frame in the opening. As you can see, the interior door (2) is installed in the box (1), which is fixed in the opening with screws (3). Blow foam between the wall and the box (4). The process is as follows: we install the box in the opening, fix it to the wall, foam it.
Photo - Disassembled door frame and door before installation
If, after installing the door, its threshold cannot be hidden in the floor, for convenience, choose a box without a U-shaped threshold. It does not have a lower crossbar, so you will simply have nothing to interfere with walking.
Step 3. Assembling the door frame.
Photo - The door frame must be assembled for ease of installation
Loops must be attached to the purchased box. The door should have a cutout for the handle, as well as for the door lock of the interior door. We begin assembling the door frame. It is necessary to connect all the parts of the box together and fit the size of the opening. The factory length usually comes with a margin of 5 cm.
The surest option not to make a mistake is to assemble the parts on the floor the way they should be in the doorway. Special attention it is necessary to turn to the metal bases of the hinges, they should stick up so that the door can be hung on them from above.
Choose the opening side depending on the rooms between which the doors are installed. From small rooms, such as a bathroom, a pantry, it is better to open the doors outward, from large rooms into the corridor - inside.
Photo - The correct position of the end strips
We attach the upper bar to the screws. The end strips (1) must lie in line. If there is no line, then the bar lies incorrectly and needs to be deployed.
Photo - Tighten the screws after pre-drilling
Given the structure of fiberboard and the characteristics of its strength, in the box, before screwing in, it is necessary to drill holes with a wood drill with a diameter of 3 mm. We carry out this action so that our box does not crack during the assembly process. For the same reason, screw fixing points should be located closer to the center, away from edges and corners.
Photo - Factory stock box
We will cut off the factory stock of the box (protruding edge). To fit the box, we accurately measure the dimensions of the doorway of the interior door. And we transfer it to the door frame, taking into account the gap minus 1-2 cm on all sides for the possibility of foaming. We recommend that you double-check yourself on the dimensions of the structure several times.

The protruding surplus is best cut with a hand saw. It is advisable not to use an automatic saw to avoid damage to the coating.

As a result of all the manipulations, we get a U-shaped door frame, ready for installation in the doorway of the interior door.

Step 4. Installing the box in the opening.
We put the box in the doorway. Level up. We check the correctness and evenness of the assembly of the box by hanging the door on the hinges and closing it.
Photo - Checking the position of the box with a level
Photo - Drill diameter 4 mm for wood
The box installed in the opening must be fixed with self-tapping screws. We remove the end decorating strip and drill 7-8 through holes on each side. The distance between the holes is 25-30 cm.
Photo - Drilled box
The wood drill is not designed for drilling walls, we only drill a fiberboard box with it. After that, we again check the position of the box with the help of a level, since it could move during the drilling process. If there are no changes, start drilling the wall. Using a thin concrete drill with a diameter of 4 mm, through the holes in the box, we mark the wall. It is impossible to completely drill the wall through the box, as it can be damaged. The hole diameter is 4 mm, if you make more, then the caps of the self-tapping screws will fall out. Next, we remove the box from the opening and begin to make holes with a drill with a diameter of 6 mm. If the wall is brick, the mounting holes should be in solid brick, and not in the masonry joint, in which the dowels do not hold very well.

Dowels are mounted in the finished holes. We fix the box in the wall with self-tapping screws. For convenience, you can use a screwdriver or a drill with a nozzle for a self-tapping screw head. Do not screw in the screws completely, the deflection of the box is possible. In order to avoid deflection, wedge lining is possible. To check the evenness and absence of distortions, in the process of screwing in the screws, additionally check the box for level.
Photo - Lining wedges
At the end of the installation, the box is checked from the side of the room using a level.

Step 5. Installing the door on the hinges.
How to install an interior door? It is enough to put the door on the hinges
If this is a fiberboard door, given its weight, it is possible to do it alone. After its installation, we will try to open and close. In the closed position, the gaps between the box and the door should be about 3 mm.
Photo - Check for gaps between the box and the door
Photo - Closing and opening the door - easy, without distortion
The lock is inserted into the interior door. As well as installing a handle.
Step 6. Filling the seams with mounting foam.
An important step is to fill the gap between the wall and the box with foam. It must be carried out with installed door. In the process of drying, the foam increases its volume. If you overdo it with its quantity, it can pull out the screws, bend the box and the door cannot be closed. You will have to cut everything and start the installation again.
Photo - Cardboard in the gap between the door and the box during foaming
Foaming seams is the easiest job. The vertical seam is filled from below. You need to be careful about the amount of filling. Foam is able to increase its volume when dried. Therefore, it is necessary to fill the third part of the space between the door frame and the doorway of the interior door. Excessive consumption may damage both the box and the structure as a whole, since the foam can get on the front of the box and the door and spoil their appearance. Complete hardening of the mounting foam occurs within 24 hours, the required temperature is 20 degrees.
Photo - Finishing a wide opening with plaster
If a wooden door frame is installed, possible option finishes can be stucco slope (1). Cement-sand plaster will favorably emphasize your choice of doors from natural wood. But it is not recommended for fiberboard boxes, as they are not compatible with the high humidity of materials used for plastering.

Step-by-step installation of interior doors, not counting the preparation time, will take about three hours.
Do-it-yourself assembly and installation of interior doors is a very serious and responsible business. Therefore, in this article, in order to independently assemble, install and save money, we will analyze step by step such a topic as assembling and installing interior doors with our own hands. After all, not everyone can independently assemble and install the box and doors correctly. Calling a specialist will cost you a pretty penny, and if the house is new and you need to install more than, say, 10 doors, you can generally go broke.
The most common on the market, among ready-made interior doors, are doors made of natural wood, MDF and fiberboard.
MDF doors consist of wooden frame sheathed with laminated sheets of fiberboard. This is one of the cheapest types of doors and also the lightest. But the strength of such doors leaves much to be desired, and besides, they are afraid of moisture, because of which it can be “unscrewed” a little. So if you want to put such a door in the bathroom, then you should first think carefully.
Interior doors made of MDF are more durable, resistant to moisture and have better sound insulation in relation to doors made of fiberboard, respectively, and their price is slightly higher. Well, as the saying goes, "you have to pay for quality."
Interior doors made of natural wood, as you may have guessed, are among the most durable and expensive types of interior doors. And their prices depend on what kind of wood they are made of.
They are also divided into types according to.
Types of door frames for interior doors.
Fiberboard boxes, like doors, are not very durable, respectively, and their price is also low. Due to their fragility, heavy doors such as MDF and wood cannot be hung on such boxes. Since the boxes are made of fiberboard, then the doors should be made of the same material.
The door frame made of dry raw profiled timber is accordingly much stronger than the previous ones, and the price is higher, although it needs finishing with your own hands.
The door frame made of laminated wood is similar to the previous one, except that it no longer requires processing. However, when buying such a box, you need to pay attention to the quality of lamination, if the layer is too thin, then it is more susceptible to physical impacts, and this is the appearance of scratches and scuffs, cracks may appear and subsequently fly around.
Preparatory stages before assembling and installing interior doors with your own hands.
First you need to dismantle the old interior door, remove the old door frame and remove ill-fitting cement. If there is such a need, then level the doorway with various dry mixes, of which there are a huge number on the market, for example, Teplon.
If, after removing the old door frame, too large chips remain at the doorway, then to level them, you can fix the board to the slope that needs to be leveled, it will act as if it were a formwork, and hammer potholes along it and along the walls. After the solution has hardened, you can carefully remove the board. You can fix it with the same dowel-nails or with spacers. After leveling, you can proceed to putty, if there is such a need.
Do-it-yourself assembly and installation of interior doors, the main stages.
Do-it-yourself installation of interior doors usually begins with assembling the box, installing hinges, and after that we install the box in the doorway, anchor it and foam it. Install door leaf, an additional element if necessary, and finally the installation of platbands. If the door frame has a threshold, then the door must be folded to it.

Assembling the door frame of the interior door with your own hands.
1. First of all, you need to choose a flat surface, it can be either the floor or a couple of tables shifted towards each other, and lay something soft, cardboard packaging from the door is also suitable. We put vertical bars (stand, hinge and porch) from the door frame with the porch to the top and put the door leaf into them. Now we need to "adjust" both standing ones so that there is a gap of 2-3 mm between them and the door leaf. To make it easier, you can use pieces of cardboard to maintain the gap, inserting them between the canvas and the stand.
2. Now we need to cut the ceiling, top crossbar to size. To do this, we apply a crossbar to our lying standing and canvas from above, align it “flush” with one of the standing ones and mark the length. It remains to saw off the bar at the mark. If you have a laminated door frame, then you need to start sawing from the laminated side. If you do the opposite, you can chip the laminate and ruin the look.
3. Again we apply the crossbar to the uprights and the canvas, and mark the dimensions of the protrusions of the porch for sawing on the upper crossbar or on the standing ones. A hacksaw is best suited for sawing, as it has smaller teeth and a thinner web, so the laminated surface will not chip off. It is best to cut not according to the mark, but next to it. While sawing, be careful not to touch the laminated surface below. When the cuts are ready, the extra protrusions are carefully removed with a chisel.
4. We apply a lintel to the pillars and fasten them with self-tapping screws, two on each side. Usually, the upper ceiling bar is attached to the stand-by wood screws with dimensions 4 * 75 and 4 * 50. Of course, it is initially desirable to drill holes slightly smaller than the diameter of the self-tapping screws, especially for boxes made of fiberboard. Now we also need to observe a gap of 3 mm between the lintel and the top of the canvas, again, you can use pieces of cardboard.
5. Just in case, let's check the diagonal, and if everything is fine, then we proceed to sawing off the standing ones. You need to saw them off so that there is a gap of about 10 mm between the floor and the canvas, there should also be a gap between the floor and the standing 1-2 mm, to ensure thermal expansion floor covering. In general, for interior doors without a threshold, it is customary to leave a gap between the floor and the canvas of 5-10 mm, this is necessary to ensure air exchange, and a gap of 10-15 mm is left at kitchen doors. Here it is needed for a sudden gas leak, since the gas is heavier than it falls to the floor, and when the door is closed with a small gap, the kitchen will quickly fill with gas, and for it to explode, it is enough to turn on the light, and with a normal gap, it will spread throughout the apartment, thanks to which a leak can be identified by smell even before the critical volume.
If you have a door frame with semicircular sections of the porch, then a rectangular joint will not work, since the joints will be very noticeable, in such cases the joints are made at an angle of 45 °. To make such connections, you will need a miter box.
When assembling and installing door frames and interior doors with a threshold, such as entrance or bathroom doors, the threshold is installed in the same way as the lintel. The only difference is that after installing the top crossbar, the posts are sawn off 3 mm longer than the door leaf in order to maintain the gap.
Installation of hinges, awnings, on the box and the interior door.
Before installing the hinges (hinges), you must first determine where the doors will open, outward or inward, and in which direction, to the left or to the right. Accordingly, we select the left and right loops. If you turn on figurative thinking, and imagine that the door opens on you to the left, then you need “left” hinges, if in right side, then "right". The hinges consist of two parts, cards, one of which is screwed to the door leaf, and the second to the frame.
Where the door will open, into the inside of the room or out, depends on the premises where the doors are installed. If the installation of interior doors is carried out in small rooms (pantry, bathrooms, balcony, loggia), then the doors should open outward, in large rooms the doors usually open inward.
1. Now we mark the hinges on the box and the door leaf. Generally, there should be 200mm from the top of the top loop to the edge of the fabric and from the bottom of the bottom loop to the edge. We take out pieces of cardboard from the vertical slots between the canvas and the uprights (we don’t touch the honeycomb of the upper crossbar and the door of the cardboard), move the canvas to the side where the lock will be. We insert the loops into the enlarged gap, measure them, and mark their locations with a pencil. For the convenience of work from below, the standing ones can be carefully fastened with a wooden plank, a bar.
2. After marking, we take the canvas out of the box, put it carefully on the edge, apply the loops to the marked places and draw them around the contour with a pencil.
3. Then you need to make a sample for hinges with a depth of one hinge card, with a well-sharpened chisel or cutter. Since the selection for loops cannot be corrected in the future, you need to work carefully. When working with a chisel, you first need to walk along the contour of the future loop, while retreating 1-2 mm inward and try not to cut deeper than the thickness of the loop card. When sampling wood for sheds, you need to regularly try on a sample map to control the boundaries and depth of sampling.
4. We apply the hinge cards to the selected places and fasten them to the door, initially drilling holes for the screws so that the canvas does not crack. The caps of the self-tapping screws should be flush.
5. Now you need to cut the hinges onto the standing ones, for this we put the canvas back on the box and check the marking places on the box, we also make a selection and fasten the second card (part) of the loop. It is only necessary to carefully insert into the door frame due to the fragility of the structure, so it must be held well, it is not advisable to lift it. You can embed the hinges into the floor before assembling the box, making all the necessary measurements and markings for this, or after installing the door frame in the doorway.
Many advise installing three hinges on the door, the third is placed either in the middle or between the middle and the upper hinge (hinge) about 50 cm from the top of the door leaf to reduce the load on the upper hinge. Because over time, under the weight of the door leaf, the screws screwed into the upper hinge begin to break their seats and the door sags, and various attempts to strengthen the upper hinge do not help. Therefore, experienced craftsmen recommend installing three hinges at once, and it will be difficult to find the same one later.
If you want to simplify your work or are afraid to spoil the door with the frame, then you can install overhead butterfly hinges that do not need to be tapped, but there is one thing, it is not advisable to install them on doors weighing more than 40 kg, but for budget (laminated, veneered) they are perfect.
Do-it-yourself installation of the door frame in the opening.
Before starting installation, you need to make sure that the doorway is clean and there is nothing superfluous in it. If the opening is very wide, then it can be reduced by installing one or two beams at the installation sites of the standing ones, the width required to the missing size.
During the installation of the door frame, you need to make sure that the transverse is horizontal, and the vertical ones. We fasten the upper part of the box with wedges at the junction of the standing and transverse, if the opening is much wider than the door frame, then bars can be installed. To fix the lower part, you will need a bar, 6 mm more than the width of the door leaf in order to maintain the gap, it will play the role of a temporary lower cross to wedged the lower part of the door frame. We expose the standing ones strictly vertically, check them with a level, put the lower spacer and burst them with wedges. You can check the box diagonally.
When the door frame is exposed and aligned, we fix it.
We fix the door frame with dowels or anchors. If the walls are brick or concrete, then first in the standing rooms you need to drill holes with a drill for wood at the places where the hinges are attached, and on the opposite standing room, to fix the box, it is drilled at the place of the porch. Just in case, we again check the level of the door frame and if everything is as it should be, we put a drill on concrete with a diameter of 4 mm and carefully through the drill holes we outline the location of future holes for the dowels. After that, the door frame can be removed, we put a drill on concrete with a larger diameter of 6 mm, drill holes for dowels or anchors, insert them, and then put the door frame in place.
In the resulting holes we place screws, dowels, but they need to be driven only halfway. It is recommended to check again the correctness of the installation with a level and, if necessary, adjust it correctly. If everything costs as you need, you can safely drive the screws or dowels all the way. But be careful, with a strong tightening of the screws, the box may bend, so that this does not happen, you can use wooden wedges. Just in case, we again check the door frame with a level and if everything is fine, then you can install the door in place. We check for opening and closing, we also check the gaps between the door leaf and the box.
There is another way to attach the door frame. We will need mounting plates, direct hangers for attaching the profile to the wall, used in working with drywall. They can also be used in conjunction with the above method. You just need to apply them fine finish walls or drill seats for them, fix the door frame, cut off the excess from the plates and finish at the attachment points.
You may be interested in articles and.
Instead of hangers, you can use metal mounting corners.
And if beauty and aesthetics are not important to you or you are in a hurry, then you can fix the door frame by simply drilling the stand-alone holes in two or three places on each side and drowning the self-tapping screws.
A little advice. Try not to anchor into the masonry joints, there are dowels in them, the anchors almost do not hold.
Now, with the help of mounting foam, we finally fix the door frame, after pasting it with adhesive tape. To increase the adhesion of the foam to the wall, it must be moistened with water. Since the foam increases in volume when it dries, about a third of the empty space between the doorway and the box needs to be filled. Vertical seams need to start filling from the bottom. After foaming, the door must be closed, pieces of cardboard should be inserted between the box and the door so that the foam does not squeeze the door frame, otherwise the door may not open, or open the door frame with spacers. For complete drying of the foam, you must wait one day, and then it will securely fix the box.
After that, you can remove all unnecessary and proceed to the installation of platbands.
doorway decoration
Platbands on the door
The seam with foam between the box and the wall is closed with platbands. In the corners, the platbands are connected to the "mustache", with the help of a bevel or miter box they are cut at an angle of 45 degrees. The platbands are attached to the door frame with finishing nails or screws with special plugs, initially drilling holes about 50-75 cm apart. The platbands should recede from the edge of the door frame by 10-15mm. on the thickness of the hinge connection.
Dobory in the doorway.
Since sometimes the thickness of the doorway is greater than the thickness of the door frame, the opening is trimmed with an additional strip. You can attach the bar to the opening with building silicone.
If the doorway is wider than the door frame and you do not want to install extensions, then you can plaster the “surplus” of the opening. How to do this, you can read in the article. If the door frame is made of fiberboard, then such a finish cannot be used, since fiberboard is afraid of moisture and can swell.
Do-it-yourself assembly and installation of interior doors, as you can see, does not require a lot of time and effort of many people. Doors can be installed by one person, the main thing is to do everything right, take your time, measure everything accurately and you will succeed no worse than professional installers.

- Step 6: Secure

- Step 8: Hanging and Cladding
Replacing interior doors is not as time-consuming and complicated as it seems. You can fill a double or single opening yourself without the help of a specialist. Of course, you will not save time, but you will save money and acquire new skills when repairing an apartment or house.
How to install an interior door: in this article we will tell you how to choose a good door leaf, what the block for filling the opening consists of and how to mount it.
Opening measurement
Making a mistake at the stage of measuring the doorway is unacceptable: if you purchase a system of large dimensions, you won’t be able to insert it, smaller ones won’t be able to fix it well.
The doorway is best measured after dismantling old door when there was access to a bare wall. In this way, you can assess the situation and make the right measurements. Removing them is simple: take a tape measure and determine the height and width of the entrance along the wall in the narrowest place (relevant for buildings where the vertical structure is poorly observed). With this data, go to the store behind a brand new door.
Manufacture of the product according to individual sizes will not be required: in houses with apartments, builders initially lay standard openings, and fillings for them are always available on the open market.
Interior doors in a private wooden house may differ from the standard ones, then you will have to order new ones and wait for their manufacture.
Door selection
The first thing you should pay attention to when choosing a canvas and a box is the material of their manufacture.
The ideal option is to purchase a box and a canvas from the same material. You should not give preference to fiberboard, doors made of it are short-lived, they are installed at construction sites so that new owners can replace them with permanent ones made of more durable materials. Ideally, you should get a solid array as a door filling; to reduce the cost, the canvas can be replaced with MDF, which is also a durable raw material for making a cheaper door frame.
Additional slats and platbands can be made of fiberboard, wood or MDF. They do not carry loads, they only decorate gaps and mask connections.
Double doors are more often chosen for large rooms and halls, single-leaf blocks are installed in bedrooms and kitchens. In any case, the size of the box and the number of sheets are determined by the size of the opening.
Step-by-step instructions for installing from scratch
Installing interior doors with your own hands will not take much time, just stock up on the right tool, purchase necessary material and you can get to work. Follow the detailed step by step instructions and your success is guaranteed.
This plan is valid for the installation of swing doors, sliding doors are mounted a little differently, but in a similar way.
Step 1: prepare the tool and material
To install an interior door you will need:
- Drill or perforator;
- Drills for 3 and 4 mm for wood;
- Drills 4 and 6 mm for concrete;
- Saw;
- Screwdriver;
- wood screws;
- Level / plumb;
- Mounting foam;
- Roulette;
- Pencil.
In addition, a door block must be purchased in advance.
Step 2: determine the tactics of action
Installation of wooden doors is carried out according to the standard scheme shown in the photo.
- door frame;
- door leaf;
- Nail/screw;
- Mounting foam.
First, we will assemble the box, then insert it into the opening and hang the door.
Step 3: assemble the box
There are 2 options for assembling the box under the canvas.
To understand whether the extra parts of the tree are cut correctly, assemble the box on the floor like a mosaic: everything should fit perfectly. Then we fix the strips on the screws from the side of the wall.
For the threshold, you also need to determine the place by attaching a canvas to the box assembled along the upper part. Step back 2.5 mm from it and take a risk. At this mark, attach the lower bar - the threshold.
Step 4: markup for hinges
At the stage of assembling the box, it is worth determining the attachment points for the hinges. To do this, on the side stand, measure 20-25 cm from the top and bottom, attach loops and make risks with a knife or pencil. Screw the product with self-tapping screws, thereby determining the future location of the loop, which will facilitate its fastening. Now insert the canvas, measure the gaps to the side edges and make risks on the canvas. In the same way, make several fasteners, so as not to lose their location later.
Remove the screws and the loop, they will need to be fixed after mounting the box in the opening.
The box is ready for installation. More detailed process demonstrates the author of the video.
Step 5: Installing the box
Now do-it-yourself door installation is suitable, and it begins with the installation of the assembled box. To do this, you need to put the structure on the threshold and align the vertical. For verification, use a plumb line and a level. To prevent the box from falling during the verification, fix it with spacers or temporary wedges from wood scraps.
Now you can check the canvas: will it open or not. To do this, insert it into the installed box, focusing on a flat wall. If the opening does not occur or is not fully realized, it may be necessary to correct the struts and adjust the position of the post and cross bars.
If you managed to install everything correctly and the canvas fits well into place, you can fix the box. How to do it:
- On the sides of the upper crossbar, wedges are driven in, then over its fastening to the uprights;
- Wedges are driven in along the entire height of the opening, constantly checking the evenness of the installation and the absence of displacements in any plane.
Step 6: Secure
The delivered and verified box must be finally fixed so that it can take on the canvas. There are 2 solutions:
- Screw the box to the side walls with screws. it reliable way, for its implementation, a few screws or wood screws are enough. Choose inconspicuous attachment points, mainly use the areas under the door hinges and under the lock plate. They take a concrete block and make a hole for a screw. Now tighten the fastener so that its cap does not remain above the plane of the tree. If this amount of fasteners is not enough, you can drill through holes in other places and also plant self-tapping screws, the caps of which are covered with plugs to match the surface.
- The second way is to use hidden plates. A feature of the method is the absence of the need to drill the box and the wall.
After that, fill the space between the opening and the box mounting foam 2/3 of the total thickness. To prevent the structure from being squeezed out, install spacers inside the passage contour for the duration of the foam polymerization.
Step 7: attach the hinges
With the correct installation of interior doors, the hinges are fixed only before the direct hanging of the canvas. Screw the parts for the box to the previously marked places, repeat the steps for the canvas.
Step 8: Hanging and Cladding
The most difficult part is over, now you can hang the canvas and close the joints with platbands. How to install an interior door clearly tells the master in the video.
As you can see, it is quite possible to replace or install a new interior door on your own, following a clear procedure. The technology is described in detail and given in the accompanying videos, so it will not be difficult to understand the issue.
At first glance, there is nothing difficult in installing doors: just install a door block in the opening, blow it out with foam, embed locks, nail trims and that's it. This is how the installation process looks in general terms, let's take a closer look at it in order to determine a rational sequence of actions.
To install an interior door, you will need:
Tools:
- a hammer;
- plumb;
- roulette;
- drill;
- feather drill for wood Ø 24 mm;
- end saw or miter box and hacksaw;
- level;
- screwdriver or screwdriver;
- milling cutter or chisel.
Materials:
- wooden wedges;
- mounting foam;
- self-tapping screws;
- handle, door latch, hinges;
- door, box, platbands, extensions.
Preparatory work
Training doorway installation depends on the initial condition of the room. In a new building, install the doors after all the "dirty" construction and finishing works: the ceiling and floor must be ready, the walls must be plastered. You can even paste wallpaper: installing doors is a clean job, if everything is done according to the rules, there will be no dirt. When replacing the door block, it is necessary to dismantle the old door frame, clean the surface of crumbling plaster and repair the chipped areas.
Assembling the door frame
The dimensions of the door frame parts are determined based on the dimensions of the door leaf. In the assembled state, the gaps from the door leaf to the frame should be 2 mm on the sides and top and about 4 mm from the bottom. In a U-shaped door frame (without a threshold), the side posts should be 1-1.5 cm longer than the height of the door leaf. Cut the parts to the desired size and assemble the box by connecting them with self-tapping screws. For greater strength, the joints of the box can be glued.
Insert hinges
Lay the door frame on the floor, place the door leaf in it. Using strips of cardboard, set the gaps indicated above, mark with a pencil the attachment points of the hinges on the box and door leaf. The edge of the hinge should be at a distance of 20 cm from the edge of the door leaf. If the doors are heavy, you can install a third hinge. The main part of the load falls on the upper loop, so it is advisable to install the third loop not in the center, but closer to the top.
Attach door hinge to the installation site and trace around the perimeter with a sharp knife, cutting through the wood to the depth of the thickness of the hinge plate. With a sharp beveled chisel or handheld electric mill, remove the layer of wood so that a seat is formed exactly the size of the plate. Install the loop, it should fit snugly in the recess and not protrude beyond the edges. Screw the screws into the holes. Thus, install all halves of the loops.
Hang the door leaf on the hinges and check the gaps between the leaf and the frame. Next, install the door block vertically and check the opening of the doors, the canvas should open freely and not spring when closing.
Door block installation
Remove the door leaf from the hinges. Position the door frame in the center of the opening and fix its position with wedges. Check the location of the box relative to the edge of the walls - they should be in the same plane. The hinged side of the box is attached first. Align the rack vertically with a plumb line or level. Drive in the wedges just above the junction of the box post with the top rail, secure the entire box by placing the wedges at the corners. Hang the door leaf on the hinges and, tapping the box riser with a rubber mallet, adjust the position of the door so that the door closes freely and, when closed, adjoins the porch with the entire plane.
Next, close the door, insert strips of cardboard folded several times into the gap between the door leaf and the box. This is done in order to prevent the box from being deformed by mounting foam, which expands when it solidifies. Fill the space between the door frame and the wall with mounting foam, after it has completely dried, cut off the excess with a knife.
Platband fastening
To join the trim, the trim must be cut at 45°. It is most convenient to work with an electric end saw, if such a tool is not available, use a miter box and a hacksaw. The vertical racks of the casing are cut and fastened first, then the upper horizontal bar.
Installation of interior doors with additional trims
Additional strips allow you to beautifully decorate doorway in a situation where the width of the box is less than the thickness of the walls of the doorway. Dobory on the door frame can be installed in the groove or in a quarter. In the first case, in the box, on the side opposite to the opening of the doors, a groove is made along the thickness of the extension. The slats are attached with glue after the box is installed. The space formed between the extension and the wall is filled with mounting foam. The platbands are nailed to the extension after the foam dries and the excess is cut off. In the case when the extensions are installed in a quarter, the slats are attached to the box before installation in the doorway with self-tapping screws from the outside.
Insertion of latches and handles
Decide on the height of the handle from the floor, usually it is 95-100 cm. When choosing a distance, be guided by the convenience and design features of the door leaf.
Let's take a look at the cutout of a door latch with separate handles. Mark the places for drilling the holes for the handle square on the door leaf rack and for the latch itself in the center on the end side of the door. The distance from the edge of the canvas to the center of the hole for the square is determined based on the measurements of the latch, for most latches it is 45 mm.
Using a drill and a Ø 24 mm wood drill bit, make a hole for the square. To make the edges neat, stop drilling as soon as the tip of the drill appears on the opposite side. Continue to work, but on the reverse side. Then drill a hole for the latch.
Insert the latch into the end hole, temporarily fix with self-tapping screws for convenience. Cut the wood along the perimeter to the depth of the thickness of the latch plate. Unscrew the screws, remove the latch and remove the wood under the seat with a chisel. Insert the latch into place, check the alignment of the hole for the square and fix it with self-tapping screws.
Now let's move on to the handles - remove the decorative trims from them, insert a square into one of the handles, fix it with an internal screw using a hexagon, which usually comes with the handles. Install the handle in place by inserting the square into the latch, then screw it with self-tapping screws to the door. Install the opposite handle and also secure with self-tapping screws, do not forget to tighten the inner screw that fixes the square. Check the handle for operability, after which you can screw the decorative trims.
The next step is to install the counter bar on the box riser. In order to determine the place where the latch tab will rest, apply a little paint on it (it is better to use water-soluble paint). In the marked place, make a recess under the tongue with a chisel and a hammer.
Screw the counter plank with self-tapping screws, outline the perimeter with a knife, remove the bar and select the wood for the seat. After installing the counter bar, screw in the screws, close the door and check the operation of the latch.
The ability to handle carpentry and measuring tools is already a reason to try to solve such difficult task how to install interior doors with your own hands. The work is simple, but tricky in its own way. It will take scrupulousness, and even tediousness in marking and adjustment, otherwise it will not work to install the interior door with the box correctly.
Features of installing interior doors
At first glance, nothing complicated, but this is only a superficial impression. We are talking about not just installing the frame and the door leaf in the interior opening, but doing it beautifully, without distortions, scratches and sagging hinges. If this is the first experience, then it is best to make detailed step-by-step instructions for installing interior doors with your own hands before starting work. It's not embarrassing for newbies. Even experienced craftsmen often make notes with their own hands - what not to forget and what to look for when installing a door frame on a specific interior partition.
During the installation process, you will need to solve the two most difficult tasks with your own hands:
- Correctly assemble and install the frame of interior doors, align and fix it so that the frame does not sag under the weight of the door leaf;
- With your own hands, mark and cut out the mounting grooves on the vertical rack of the box and on the end of the interior door leaf.
An experienced craftsman takes 2-3 hours to install an interior door, a beginner will need at least a day to fully install the frame and hang the door leaf.
Advice! It is not necessary to stupidly follow the instructions for installing interior doors, which recommend consistently inserting lock fittings, attaching hinges, and only at the very end to solve problems with hanging interior doors. The main thing is to install the box and the door leaf with a fresh head with your own hands, and the platbands, locks and handles with platbands can be postponed for the next day.
You will have to measure and cut a lot. All cuts are made by hand with a hand saw, therefore, in addition to fresh forces, you will need to stock up on high-quality tools.
Tools for installing interior doors
A day or two before the start of work, it will be necessary to assemble a working arsenal for working with lumber. It can be collected from friends or rented. Why two days before installation? Because ahead of time before the start of work, you will need to check with your own hands the serviceability and performance of each tool:
- Building levels - small, 70-100 cm, and large, 150 - 200 cm, with a working bubble indicator. Usually, they do not pay attention to the condition of the camera and the lighthouse, considering them to be in good condition, but at the box office, it happens that there are bent and even broken specimens, this is the most important tool in installing interior doors;
- Marking tool - a carpentry corner with a ruler, a tape measure and a meter metal ruler. We check the presence of marks of angles of 90 o and 45 o;
- Screwdriver or electric drill with a bit nozzle for cross heads of self-tapping screws. We check with our own hands how the cartridge holds, and the serviceability of the wiring - batteries;
- A cutting tool, you can cut the timber of interior doors with an electric jigsaw, but it is best to stock up on a pair of hacksaws - carpentry and metal. The first is used for cutting the details of the box, the second is used for thin cutting of the platbands.
In addition to the tool, you will need a hammer, a clamp, a carpenter's chisel, mounting foam in a can, adhesive tape and gloves. When installing interior doors, there is little dust and waste, but you still have to periodically clean it with your own hands so as not to spread it throughout the apartment.
In addition, it would be right to have a puncher with a spatula-bayonet in stock, because when installing the interior door frame, there may be problems with the doorway in the wall. Ideally, the gap between the racks of the box and the ends of the opening should remain 10-20 mm, for normal alignment and foaming of the cracks. In reality, the opening may be uneven, and you will need to use your own hands, a puncher or a hammer with a chisel, to knock down part of the concrete or stone.
How to assemble an interior door frame
The best option would be to buy a ready-made door kit, which usually includes:
In this case, the entire process of mounting the box of the interior frame comes down to transferring the second parts of the hinges to the frame parts with your own hands, assembling the loot with self-tapping screws and installing it in the opening.
The entire job will take less than two hours. One of the options for installing interior doors with your own hands on video
The only drawback of the above scheme is that not all manufacturers modern models interior doors produce their products in kits designed for do-it-yourself installation. Most often, the customer buys a door leaf, and platbands and frame parts are purchased in order to install an interior door with a frame on their own.
How to install an interior door with your own hands
First of all, it is necessary to lay out the door leaf on a flat area. Next, the selected pair of beams is laid to the left and right ends of the sash. With a tape measure, we measure the width and estimated height of the future carrier frame. Then, with the help of a building level and a tape measure, the dimensions of the interior passage are checked.
Important! This is done in order to determine whether the platbands will close the edges of the gap in the wall, and how thick the additional elements should be used.
If you “miss” with the height or width of the frame, you will have to redo the trim with your own hands or, even worse, you will need to raise the interior door in height.
We assemble the frame of the door frame of arbitrary size
In order for the installation of the interior door to turn out without distortions, it is important to choose the right distance between the left and right pillars so that the door leaf enters the frame with a small gap, no more than 2 mm per side. In this case, the door will open freely without wedging in the loot.
The easiest way is to assemble the frame with your own hands using a clamp, a saw and two blanks. Vertical racks, as in the case of preparation, are attached to the ends, aligned and fixed with clamps.
From the side of the upper and lower edges of the web, an allowance equal to the thickness of the beam is left on the blanks. At the same time, a cut line is applied to the left allowance with their own hands at an angle of 45 ° for further docking with the horizontal crossbars of the frame. Without disassembling the structure, they apply markings for cutting grooves for awnings, locks and handles.
If the interior door is too wide or has a complex shape, then usually at this stage the conformity of the frame configuration with the door to the shape of the interior opening is checked. To do this, a pair of nails is hammered onto a wooden plank at a distance from each other equal to the outer width of the frame. The bar must be fixed above the opening, and a couple of construction plumb lines are hung on the nails. If the gap between the frame and the wall is 10-15 mm, then the calculation is correct.
Installing hinges on an interior door
After all the checks have been completed, it is necessary to cut mounting grooves for the canopies in the canvas with a chisel or a carpenter's knife and a hammer. The easiest way to mill a niche is with manual router, but, as practice shows, the work can be done with your own hands and without expensive power tools.
If this operation is difficult, then overhead hinges or models for drilling can be used for interior doors. For installation, you only need to drill holes for screwing fasteners.
Fasten the frame in the doorway
- We mark with a marker on the steppe the level of the upper horizontal cross member of the frame, this will help to complete correct installation horizontally and vertically;
- With the help of wedges and a building level, we align the frame vertically and horizontally with our own hands. We fix the position of the frame in the opening with wooden plugs and wedges.
Advice! If the frame and door leaf are light, then the frame can be fixed with mounting perforated petals to the wall of the interior partition.
Next, it is necessary to blow out the space between the frame and the wall with mounting foam, while installation on the PPU is being carried out, it is necessary to check again and, if necessary, finally align it vertically using a long building level. We apply a small building level to the upper mark and, if necessary, knock the frame to the desired height.
Door leaf installation
After the loot is firmly fixed with hardened foam, it is necessary to install the mating parts of the canopies. To do this, initially the door leaf is lifted with wedges so that a gap of 1-2 mm is obtained between the threshold and the lower edge.
It remains only to install the sash on the awnings, and you can proceed to decorative trim interior doors.
Installation of platbands on the interior door
Facing the frame with platbands is not particularly difficult. First of all, install the vertical strips of the platbands. The height of the bar is measured according to the mark made earlier, after which the casing is applied to the frame and the line is washed down at an angle of 45 °.
Advice! It is best to make an undercut with your own hands using a thin hacksaw blade for metal. Preliminarily, adhesive tape is glued to the cut line. The bar is nailed with wallpaper nails or put on glue.
In a similar way, install the second vertical platband. After the vertical parts have been installed, you can mark the cut line on the horizontal bar, and install it on the door frame in the same way.
What are the sizes of extensions for interior doors
Additional strips are used as an additional element to increase the width or thickness of the door frame. Most often, the installation of extensions on interior doors is required in a situation where the wall is much thicker than the canvas, and there is a gap between them that needs to be closed.
The width of the additional rails ranges from 10 mm to 200 mm, for interior structures, the most popular size is 10-20 mm, and often, due to the non-standard profile of the slot, the extensions have to be ordered or cut out with your own hands from the trim strips.
How to install extensions on an interior door
If, after installing the box, the unpleasant fact is revealed that the vertical plane of the frame is recessed into the space of the interior opening relative to the wall surface, then the only way to correct the situation is to use additional trims.
It is first necessary to determine the size of the extension, for this the building level is applied to the wall and the distance to the front edge of the box is measured with a ruler. Thin planks are nailed with wallpaper nails, wide extensions are glued to the frame.
Professional advice on how to install interior doors
Among the features of installing home doors, the following problem areas can be noted.
Before mounting the platbands, you need to make sure that the frame or additional plank is located in the same plane with the surface of the interior wall. Otherwise, even if you make the edges washed down with your own hands perfectly, a gap will definitely appear between the platbands.
The second problem that one has to face is the sagging of the doors when installed incorrectly. To correct the situation, it is necessary to remove the canvas, put washers, or cut the edge and install the door in place.
Conclusion
Do-it-yourself installation of interior doors will require a little practice in installing canopies and extensions, but in general the work is simple, and with proper skill, the canvas can be hung in a few hours. Masters claim that with each installation, the quality of work with their own hands doubles.
