DIY office sofa. Do-it-yourself sofas for the dacha for the home and terrace. Soft seats for a simple homemade sofa
A sofa, a corner one, and even more so a folding one – the design is much more complex than a bed. The fact is that it combines the features of frame and upholstered furniture. In addition, a sofa, unlike a bed, is not a utilitarian object. It is designed for a comfortable, pleasant pastime and should also decorate the interior. And these functions - additional convenience and grace, require much more skill.
A sofa of any shape is a complex project. Its production begins with the development of a drawing. And the expected size is far from the only factor that will have to be taken into account. The shortest list includes the following:
- Dimensions of the sofa - general and all its parts;
- back angle;
- transformation mechanism if a folding sofa is intended;
- drawer drawer mechanism or storage compartment arrangement;
- thickness and rigidity - seat, backrests, armrests, pillows;
- height of legs.
In addition, it is necessary to at least approximately calculate the total load on the sofa - its own weight, the weight of all users and dynamic load, and, accordingly, strengthen the frame elements properly.
The drawing includes projections of all working components of the sofa, so that without the ability to draw or knowledge of the relevant computer programs it’s impossible to get by.
You can use a ready-made scheme on website pages. The working drawing must take into account all the above factors and include three projections of each module. At the same time, it is not recommended to change the dimensions of the sofa or its parts: the design is designed for a certain load, and if you change the dimensions without taking into account the redistribution of the load, it will lose both strength and reliability.
The only change that can be introduced here is the color and texture of the upholstery. Even using a different material for filling is not always advisable, since the project is developed for a seat and cushions with a certain rigidity.
If you have no experience in creating furniture, but have skills in working with wood and soft materials, then it is recommended to order a drawing according to custom sizes, but carry out the project yourself. Collect by ready-made diagram
Below you will find drawings and diagrams with dimensions that will tell you how to make it yourself, for example for the kitchen or living room.

Materials and tools
After the drawing has been developed, and the determination to make furniture with your own hands has not faded, you can begin to select the material.
Coniferous timber – 30*50 or 50*50 depending on the size of the structure;
- Chipboard - always laminated, plywood - birch is best, fiberboard for the bottom of drawers;
- legs for the sofa - at least 9 pieces;
- transformation or lifting mechanism - purchased in the store, taking into account the load calculated according to the project. If expected drawers, you will also need roller mechanisms;
- foam rubber, foam rubber crumbs, holofiber, padding polyester or some other soft filler. It is recommended to add non-woven material to the list, like agrotextiles, which are used to lay foam rubber: this way they prevent abrasion of the material;
- threads, upholstery fabric:
- fastening - screws, nails, self-tapping screws, etc.;
- various glues - for different materials you will need different adhesives.
Before use, wooden beams are treated with antiseptics. Plywood and chipboard do not require preparation.
You can cut out the parts yourself from sheet material, or you can order cutting. Most hardware stores offer this service. At the same time, the sheets will not only be cut faster and with better quality, since a professional tool is by default more powerful, but the edges will also be processed.
The list of tools includes both mechanical and electrical mechanisms for making a corner sofa from scratch or reupholstering a corner sofa with your own hands:
- electric drill and screwdriver;
- hand saw or hacksaw for wood, miter box, clamp;
- sewing machine for processing fabric edges;
- furniture stapler for upholstery.
We often have old sofas that are a pity to throw out and unpleasant to look at. Then knowledge of how to cover a corner sofa with your own hands will help you. Believe me, there is nothing complicated about it, and the sofa turns out like new.
The following video will tell you how to reupholster a corner sofa with your own hands:
How to make a corner sofa with your own hands
The general assembly diagram is as follows:
- assembled from fiberboard timber and foam rubber, if soft upholstery is intended. The details mirror each other, they are not the same;
- install the frame of the left side;
- assemble the frame of the right side. The corner module, depending on the model, is included in one of the parts;
- upholster the sofa with the chosen fabric.
Making furniture with your own hands always takes much longer than in a workshop or workshop. This is also related to the manufacture of parts. non-standard sizes, and with fastening conditions. Each of the units, assembled with glue, requires drying under pressure - in a clamp, and this takes at least a day.
However, it is precisely this feature that ensures the greater strength of such products.
You can also use the following video when you decide to make a corner sofa with your own hands. it contains 3 options for a homemade frame:
Soft The transformation of a frame product into a soft one is carried out directly last stage
- . The first step is to make the armrests, otherwise, the sides of the model. Typical dimensions for them: height – 55 cm, length – 90 cm, width – 20 cm. The height is given without legs, that is, only the sidewall itself. The dimensions may be different, but it is important that they exactly correspond to the parameters specified in the drawing. The base is cut out of chipboard according to the dimensions of the sidewall, the top and bottom - along the length, and secured with screws wooden blocks
- in increments of 20 cm. A hole for fasteners is drilled with a diameter of 3 mm, a screw or self-tapping screw is screwed in the direction from the chipboard to the block. The top and bottom of the armrest are also cut out of chipboard according to size and secured to wooden slats
- . Then install and fix vertical support bars - 3 pieces, in the upper and lower parts of the sidewall. Fastening to the end of the beam with two self-tapping screws. They get something like a box with one side, top, bottom and an open front wall with vertical elements.
- The remaining parts of the “box” are cut out from fiberboard and fixed with nails in increments of 10–15 cm. You can duplicate the fasteners with glue.
- On the inside of the sidewall, where the seat will be located, a chipboard overlay is fixed.
All sides except the back and the part where the pad is placed are covered with foam rubber 2 cm thick.
The second armrest is also made, taking into account the fact that it is a mirror image.
- To produce the main part of the sofa - the left one in this case - more effort will be required.
- Cut out two of the same parts in a mirror image for the second part of the frame and fasten them together in the same way. You can cut out the entire sidewall, but in this case the material consumption increases significantly.
- A vertical beam is screwed to both sidewalls with screws - it covers the part of the seam that was left free. Then, to each side panel at the end, be sure to use 2 self-tapping screws, fix three transverse beams on the back of the future product.
- The front beam connecting the upper corners of the “seat” is temporarily screwed on with one screw and without glue.
- The rear wall is reinforced with two vertical support bars. The vertical elements and the beam connecting the inclined parts of the two sidewalls are tightened with slats.
- Assemble the frame for the inclined part of the back - a support frame and 2 vertical slats. The fragment is inserted at an angle, and therefore, in order for it to fit tightly into the parts of the already assembled structure, the shape of the longitudinal bars is adjusted.
- The vertical bars of the inclined part and the bars of the rear straight part are tightened with slats.
- Assemble the seat support frame. The linings are secured to 2 longer elements - the fastening screws are at different heights, and then the frame is assembled and reinforced with at least 3 transverse bars.
- The frame should fit tightly into the already assembled frame. To do this, loosen the temporary fastening on the front beam, insert the frame, and then tighten the screws.
- A seat is made and tried on from plywood 8 mm thick. If the upholstery fabric chosen is thick - synthetic leather, for example, then holes are made in the plywood every 30 cm for ventilation. The seat is installed only after pasting with foam rubber, padding polyester and upholstery with fabric.
- A corresponding fragment of fiberboard is attached to the side of the backrest. Then the entire “seat” and “back” are covered with foam rubber in 2 layers: first with a thickness of 4 cm, and then with a thickness of 2 cm.
- For the lower part of the seat, a drawer is assembled - a part made of chipboard, reinforced with bars. It is installed later, after upholstery.
- The frame of the rear part of the backrest is reinforced with corner slopes. If the sofa will be placed in the center of the room, then the back part will be covered with chipboard.
Assembly of the left part, which includes the corner module, is more difficult. As a rule, it is equipped with a linen drawer and, in addition, may have the most different shapes depending on the type of sofa. The left part is assembled according to the same scheme: first, the sidewalls are cut out - the lower and upper parts are made of chipboard, fastened with plywood and wooden beam. All workpieces are mounted on a frame made of timber, reinforced with vertical bars according to the drawing - in the corners, of course. If the design provides external corner, here the parts are assembled onto metal corners.
If the left part is lifting, or a storage box is assembled under it, then this part of the sofa also has a bottom made of chipboard. It is recommended to cover all internal parts of the drawer or storage box with wear-resistant fabric.
The order of assembly is different: here the lower part is assembled first, and then the frame for the back is made. The lifting mechanism, if provided, is installed according to the instructions depending on its type. The assembled frame is covered with foam rubber - first with a sheet 4 cm thick, possibly in fragments, and then with a whole piece of foam rubber 2 cm thick.
The next step will be cutting out the fabric and upholstering the sofa with fabric.
- Measure the parameters of all parts that will be covered with fabric. When cutting, allowances for seams and an allowance for the softness and fluffiness of the seat are taken into account - about 1 cm.
- Before upholstery, each element of the sofa is wrapped with padding polyester. When fabric and foam come into contact, the latter wears out noticeably faster. The padding polyester will prevent wear of the foam and add fluffiness to the seats and backrest.
- On the armrests, instead of padding polyester, foam rubber is covered with agrotextiles, spunbond and others nonwoven materials. Agrotextiles are stretched over foam rubber and secured with staples. Then a cover is put on the part, straightened and secured with staples.
- The backs, seats, drawers, and so on are upholstered in the same way, taking into account that there is a larger layer of foam rubber, and a layer of synthetic padding is also placed.
- 3 or more pillows are made for the back of the sofa. The inner cover is made of non-woven fabric - the same spunbond; foam rubber chips with a padding polyester layer, holofiber and more are used as filler. The outer cover is made of upholstery fabric.
For kitchen
The corner sofa for the kitchen has its own characteristics. In most cases, it is not folding, although such options exist. The space under the seat is almost always used as a storage compartment with a hinged lid. Angular kitchen sofa always stands on legs, since in the kitchen dirt appears on the floor much faster and should not be allowed to accumulate under the furniture.
- The main load-bearing parts are the sidewalls. At least 7 of them are required, or even more, and each is cut from a single sheet of plywood with a thickness of at least 8–10 mm. You need two side panels for the right and left sides of the sofa and at least three for the side module.
- According to the drawing, the frame for each part is assembled separately. In fact, the sidewalls are fastened together with a beam with a cross-section of 40*40 mm, forming a frame for the seat, a lower support and an upper one, at the front corner of the backrest.
- Then the parts of the storage sections are secured. They are cut from chipboard and reinforced at the corners with bars. The bottom is also cut out of chipboard or plywood, since light objects will not be stored here.
- The corner module is assembled from three sidewalls, taking into account its shape - rectangular or rounded.
- You can do it differently: assemble a seat with a right angle and a smoothly curved back and the same back from three fragments of chipboard on a frame made of timber. The parts, except the back, are cut out of plywood. This entire structure, covered with foam rubber and upholstered in fabric, is attached to the sidewalls of the left and right parts.
- Another specific detail is the reclining seats. They are cut to size from plywood no less than 10 mm thick, mounted on a frame made of timber with a cross-section of 25*25 mm, covered with foam rubber and upholstered with fabric. The parts are attached to the sofa seats using piano hinges.
- The kitchen sofa is quite hard, so they use one layer of foam rubber on the seat and back with a thickness of 40–50 mm. Before upholstery, the foam rubber is covered with non-woven material.
- For finishing, choose materials that are easy to wash and do not absorb dirt and grease - furniture upholstery, synthetic leather. Covers for backs and seats are cut out with an allowance for seams and for the softness of the seat - no more than 1 cm. The material is stretched over the part and fixed with staples, first at the corners, and then along the entire length on the back side of the product.

From pallets
A pallet or pallets is a wooden box of decent size 1*1.2 m and a very small height - 12 cm. As a rule, the distance between the bottom boards reaches the width of the board itself or so. Less common are options with a solid bottom.
Making a sofa from pallets comes down to assembly structural elements– pallet, into a single whole of the required shape, and its decoration.
- Some of the design work is done before assembly. Even if you want to maintain an authentic look, the boards need to be sanded - with a grinder or just sandpaper, and then the product must be covered with a transparent matte varnish.
In addition, the pallets can be painted, stained, aged, or varnished with colored varnishes.
- The sofa seat consists of several pallets stacked on top of each other. The back is made from a vertically standing pallet. The angle is formed by the simplest L-shaped joining. Fastening - self-tapping screws.
- The top of the seat is covered with a sheet of plywood or chipboard. You can do it differently: cut out a part from plywood, cover it with foam rubber and cover it with padding polyester and fabric. Thus, a soft, removable seat is obtained. You can use the most ordinary mattress and pillows in covers made of thick, easily washable fabric.
- Between the pallets you can place solid chipboard sheets and form shelves.
This option looks great in dachas and open verandas, but it will also be useful in modern urban interiors, decorated in loft, industrial, and avant-garde styles.

Advice: if the room is cramped, you won’t be able to cut the materials efficiently. Then this can be done upon purchase - most companies and stores provide this service.
The design manufacturing process: step-by-step instructions
Before you start assembling the sofa, parts are marked on pieces of chipboard in accordance with the drawing and dimensions. Afterwards they are cut out and adjusted to each other.
What details should you get?
- The frame or linen box is the main part of the structure; everything else is attached to it; it is made of boards and bars. The middle is reinforced with transverse slats, the bottom is made of fiberboard or plywood. Slats are placed on the frame to support the mattress.
We make a frame-box with a storage box
- Armrests - they are made of chipboard, two identical or different, depending on the intended design. Assembly occurs by attaching smaller parts to large parts.
The armrest frame of the required size is wrapped with padding polyester, and then the cover is pulled on
- The back - it is attached when all the parts are already connected. It has the form of a rectangle with at least one transverse strip; lamellas are also attached to it.
We make the frame of the back, sew it and the lower part of the sofa with a slab
- Seats - they are assembled in parts, and it is important to take into account the coincidence of the diagonals of the boxes in order to obtain a normal shape, a stable frame.
For the seat, a sheet of matching size is cut out, foam rubber is glued onto it, spandbond and synthetic padding are laid
- Legs - cut out of wood or purchased ready-made, wooden, metal.
We attach the frames with legs to the frame and connect them with long screws through the holes in the legs
Before assembly, the sides are drilled; to make a folding sofa, special mechanisms are used, sold in furniture fittings stores. The frame of the product is assembled very carefully - the strength, durability, and stability of this piece of furniture depend on it.
Advice. After assembly, all parts are glued. They must first be well sanded.
Sewing a cover, covering
Before starting the sheathing, check all the joints - the fastening should be as rigid as possible, nothing should “lobble”. The surfaces to be sheathed are measured, each part is cut out, glued, then the next one is measured, cut, and glued. The elements are joined to each other, they must be properly trimmed, and the trimmings must be used to form the joints. A thick layer of foam rubber is laid on the seat - at least 100 mm. To do this, it is glued together from several thin sheets. To design the sidewalls, 40-60 mm is enough. At the end, check how tightly the upholstery fits, whether all protruding corners and sharp parts are well covered.
We attach the side parts to the corner part, connecting the lower parts of the walls
Then they move on to upholstery with furniture fabric - it is chosen to be wear-resistant, high-quality, and beautiful. The appearance of the finished product depends on this. Fabric can be purchased at any textile or furniture store.
We sew the cut parts for the seat, back and pillows from upholstery fabric
The most popular types are:
- jacquard - premium upholstery, character traits– deep texture, silky sheen, average wear resistance, difficult to clean;
Jacquard colors and patterns hold up well and do not fade
- tapestry - suitable for “elite” finishing of a sofa, this fabric has a special durable structure, a unique pattern, and a pleasant texture;
Tapestry is a fabric with an incredibly aesthetic appearance, but its price is quite significant for any budget
- velor - natural is quite expensive, artificial is cheaper, looks like soft suede, sometimes with patterns;
Velor is a fabric similar to velvet, but with a denser and longer pile
- matting - the most a budget option, reminiscent of burlap, pleasant to the touch, does not wear off for a long time;
Furniture fabric matting with unusual weaving, sometimes various colors and shades
- flock is a textile with dense pile, suitable for those who have pets, has high wear resistance, and is not afraid of animal claws;
Flock is a pleasant and soft fabric with artificial pile
- leatherette - very resistant to abrasion, has a luxurious appearance, indispensable on armrests, places where increased friction occurs, unpleasant when in contact with a naked body in the heat;
Artificial leather is a modern upholstery material with improved dust- and water-repellent properties.
- genuine leather is pleasant to the touch, environmentally friendly, durable, but extremely expensive.
Genuine furniture leather is a durable, elastic, wear-resistant upholstery material
If you combine two or three fabrics at the same time, the product will come out very original, but it is important to choose the upholstery correctly.
How the upholstery is made:
- Patterns of each part are cut out from newspapers or wallpaper, their coincidence is checked by applying them to the surfaces of the sofa;
- on the wrong side of the fabric, borders are drawn, details are cut out, leaving allowances of at least one centimeter on each side;
- the tensions are made symmetrically, so the finished sofa will look harmonious, there will be practically no folds;
- so that the fabric holds better, buttons and loops are secured through holes on the body;
- if you put a layer of agrotextile or synthetic padding under the upholstery, the foam rubber will crumble much less;
- textiles are fastened using a construction stapler, first one side, then the opposite, the edges are tucked in.
After this, the sofa is assembled again and made decorative pillows, harnesses, brushes, machine stitches. Legs and wooden pads are attached at the very end.
The final stage is decoration
Ready-made corner sofa made to measure
The sofa is decorated with bright pillows or in the color of the upholstery. This is the easiest way. If you make several sets of different covers, you can change them depending on your mood, time of year - for winter decoration Faux fur is suitable, for summer - cotton, linen. Sometimes one side of the pillow is decorated with embroidery, appliqué, bright prints, small soft toys, cords, knitted elements, while the other side remains smooth. Design using the patchwork technique is also acceptable, and sometimes a removable cover is also made. Regardless of the size of the sofa, you should not use more than five pillows. It's better that they are various shapes, size, texture.
The cover for the sofa is selected to match the interior: it should go well with other textiles in the room - curtains, carpet, chair covers, etc.
The material most often used for it is:
- fur - natural or artificial, creates a unique comfort;
- acrylic – very durable, non-allergenic;
- terry fabric - available in all sorts of colors;
- tapestry - suitable for a “rich” classic interior;
- silk, satin - look luxurious and expensive.
Blankets for decorating upholstered furniture are made from bamboo, fleece, viscose, acrylic, cotton, and silk. You can also make your own or buy a sofa cover in a store - it is convenient because it does not slip, it is easy to wash, but store-bought ones are quite expensive. A homemade one is sewn on a machine according to patterns made according to the size of the structure.
Conclusion
Make a regular or corner sofa with my own hands, with some carpentry skills, quality materials, tools, quite easily. Detailed master classes, photos and video reviews are available on many websites dedicated to the subject of furniture and repairs. It will cost like this homemade design much cheaper than store-bought analogues, and besides, it will be made with soul, according to individual sizes.

- Pride in the work done. A self-made sofa will always be a source of pride for its owner, which he can boast about to his acquaintances and friends.
Anyone with a low level of training and a certain set of tools can make a simple sofa on their own using assembly diagrams.
What is a sofa bed
In Soviet times, it was enough to say that a sofa bed was needed, and it became clear to everyone what a person needed. Modern sofas, which can also be used as a bed, differ not only in appearance, but also in the method of transformation.
Type of mechanism | Description and method of transformation |
The mechanism of a simple book can safely be called the oldest, but at the same time the simplest. In order for such a sofa to turn into a bed, it is enough to raise the front part until a characteristic click appears and lower it. To assemble the sofa, the steps are repeated. Among the positive characteristics, we can note the presence of a box for storing linen and the low cost of the mechanism, but there is a significant drawback - you need to make a lot of effort to transform it. A certain distance from the wall must also be maintained for the backrest to be lowered freely, which is not always convenient in small apartments.
|
This sofa is an improved “book” model and is distinguished by the fact that the backrest can be installed in an intermediate state, that is, reclining. The transformation mechanism is more expensive, but more functional. When unfolding the sofa, you need to focus on the number of clicks of the backrest locking mechanism - one or two. From design features The size of the department for storing linen depends. |
|
The mechanism of such a sofa is very durable, so you don’t have to worry about it wearing out if you unfold it frequently. Folds out without special effort– just pull the strap, and the front part will extend, followed by the entire mechanism. After these steps, the sofa can be used as a bed. |
|
This mechanism is most often used in corner sofas. The transformation mechanism is very simple - there is a retractable part at the bottom, with a soft pillow in it, which is manually fixed in place. Even a physically weak person can decompose. This sofa does not have a drawer for linen. |
|
The mechanism of such a sofa is hidden under a soft pillow, which will need to be removed each time before laying it out. After this, the mechanism extends and unfolds. The bed consists of 3 sections, which are not very comfortable to sleep on, so a sofa with such a mechanism is extremely inconvenient for everyday use. It’s better if you have to lay it out occasionally, for example for guests. There is no drawer for linen. |
|
Unlike the French version, the American version uses a different principle - folding occurs along with the backrest. It’s not at all difficult to unfold – just pull the back towards you. When unfolded, such a sofa bed is more comfortable for sleeping, and the convenience of the layout makes the model more popular. |
|
A sofa with an accordion mechanism is very comfortable for sleeping, as it is wide and the mattress is flat. Unfolding such a sofa is also not difficult - just lift the seat until a characteristic click appears, and then pull it out. It is during the transformation that it becomes clear why this mechanism is called that - it moves apart like the bellows of an accordion. A sofa with such a mechanism is quite reliable, takes up little space when folded, and it is possible to use drawers for linen. |
|
“Eurobook” is very reliable, since there are no mechanisms at all. Having pulled out the front part, the back is simply lowered - it is fixed on hinges. It is comfortable to sleep, and there is also a large drawer for linen. To avoid damage flooring legs, they need to be upholstered with soft material, nailed with plastic extensions or installed with rollers. |

What is a sofa sofa
People sometimes say that they need a sofa sofa. It is important to define what is meant by this name. Now the differences between a sofa, sofa and ottoman are gradually disappearing. For example, on the website of a furniture store there is no division: a sofa, sofa, and ottoman are called sofas, but on another website they sell a sofa-ottoman, calling it a sofa. The comparative analysis provided in the table will help you understand this issue.

Now let's move on directly to the process of making the sofa.
How to make a Chester sofa
To do the job you will need the following tools:
- hand circular saw;
- jigsaw;
- stapler (preferably pneumatic, but if there is no compressor, then you will have to work manually);
- drill;
- screwdriver;
- marker and pencil;
- ruler and tape measure.
This standard set of tools will be necessary when making any sofa.
So, you should prepare all the blanks and cut grooves into them in accordance with the presented sketches.
The assembly diagram is presented with a series of photographs, sequentially showing the stages of the work.
Inserting the workpieces into pre-sawed grooves, we secure them with self-tapping screws.
First, crossbars coated with PVA glue are attached to the racks.
The holders are screwed to the rail with self-tapping screws and fixed with brackets, after which the part is fixed to the frame.
The armrests and the front part of the sofa are upholstered with fiberboard.
We draw a center line and mark 14.5 cm on it - this is how the markings are made for the buttons, which will then be installed. Then, using a feather drill, holes are drilled in the marked places.
After covering it with fabric, we begin gluing the foam rubber to the frame. In those places where gluing is inconvenient, you can shoot the foam rubber with a stapler.
Now let's draw up two sketches, taking the necessary measurements.
First, measure the distance from the top button to the side bar. We do the same with the back - from the button to the back bar. You also need to measure the distance from the front pillar to the first top button on the armrest. We put all these dimensions into the sketch.
- Size L is the length of the arc from the button to the top bar.
- L+50 is 50 mm to shoot.
- 155 is the distance between the rows.
- These data are not final, as they will still change.
- 195 is the size between the buttons horizontally. On the bar it was 145mm but now has 50mm added for the pleats.
- Each row comes with an offset of 97.5 mm.
- Green shows an edge allowance of 50 mm.
- Bottom distance N this is the distance from the bottom button to the allowance block.
Taking into account all these dimensions, we get the dimensions we need.
In the second picture we see that there is also a distance IN from the front bar to the top extreme button.
After receiving these dimensions, we transfer it all to the fabric.
Now let's make the carriage tie. You can find out how to make it correctly, and how you can do without a press for making buttons, by watching the following video.
Video: correct and incorrect carriage tie
Now we need to make a mattress. To do this, a snake spring is attached to the base, and a dense woven material is placed on top of it. Then a coconut trunk is laid, then 35 (or 42) density foam rubber 10 cm thick. We lay padding polyester on top, and only after that can we start covering the sofa with fabric (or leather).
Such a sofa will be comfortable, beautiful and durable.
By viewing the following slide show, you can watch the assembly process of a similar design.

As you have already noticed, the work cannot be called easy, so without experience it will not be easy to make a high-quality Chester sofa.
How to make a corner sofa
Nowadays corner sofas are very popular, but this is not only a tribute to fashion. This design allows you to save space in a small apartment. However, this is not an economical option; such furniture will decorate both small and large rooms.
Video: making a corner sofa in an apartment
In our case, we will consider the manufacturing process soft sofa For small apartment. The basis will be chipboard.
As a rule, the size of each sofa is individual, as it is adjusted to the dimensions of the room, but the presented sketch will help you navigate the further work.
In order for all the parts to be the right size, it is necessary to make a pattern and outline the outline of the workpiece along it. Using a jigsaw, all the parts are cut out using the applied markings, after which you can begin assembling the sofa. Instead of wood screws, it is better to use confirmats, since they are specifically designed for reliable fastening of chipboard parts.
Since our sofa will not be solid, but from two parts, we will assemble them one by one. First, let's take care of the sofa, and then the attached corner part.
We will not dwell on the process of manufacturing the soft part, since this information was presented in the previous section.
As a result, we should get a small sofa like this. Please note that the spacer installed in the middle is recessed enough so that it does not prevent the springs from stretching to their maximum level under the weight of a person.
The back of the attached part of the corner sofa should be a continuation of the main part, but the lower part is made liftable, which allows you to hide bedding inside.
The lower part is made in the form of a box, the lid of which will serve as the soft part of the sofa.
The lid will be maintained in a raised state by a mechanism that also acts as a hinge.
It turned out to be a very decent and comfortable corner sofa.
What should a sofa be like for a kitchen?
Since even in the same house the sizes of kitchens can vary slightly, it is necessary to determine as accurately as possible the dimensions of the sofa for this room. Since the design is usually simple, it will not be difficult to draw a sketch containing the necessary data.
Particular attention should be paid to the seat height. Your legs will constantly be in an awkward position if the seat is too high or too low. If your height is “non-standard”, you are probably familiar with this problem. In any case, it is better to measure the height of your favorite chair, but you should not forget about other family members.
You can also make a simpler non-folding structure, which is often called a sofa chair.

How to make a Eurobook sofa
Everyone knows what a sofa book is, but few people know what a Eurobook is. Essentially, this is an improved model of the ordinary folding sofa. The design of this model allows you to install it close to the wall and even in the middle of the room. The method of transformation is also different, since the seat moves forward and the back rests on the free space. Another pleasant feature of the Eurobook is that when unfolded, such a sofa is in no way inferior in comfort to a bed, since there is no deep depression in the middle, and the 2 halves are the same size, almost flat.
There are not so many disadvantages, but one significant one is worth mentioning: when the seat is pulled out, the sofa legs sliding along the floor can scratch and even ruin the floor covering.
Frame assembly
First, we will make frames for the soft parts of the future sofa. To do this, we will need 4 two-meter straight beams without knots 40x40 mm, and from the same beam 14 pieces of 72 cm each.
Sections of bars are screwed to the four bars along the edges - they will play the role of amplifiers. To fix the frame we will use 4.2×70 mm wood screws.
Now you can assemble the frame, but for now use 1 screw per corner.
A sheet of plywood 5 mm thick, prepared to size, is placed on the assembled frame. It needs to be fixed on the narrow part of the frame with self-tapping screws (or staples), and then level the frame and check that the plane of this part is level. Then you can screw the sheet completely.
Now it's time to secure the crossbars. If they are attached to the seat at equal intervals, then one rib should be installed in the back in the center, and 2 - spaced 195 mm from the edge. The rest are attached arbitrarily.
Making a box
For the drawer you need to make 2 guides from 40x40 mm bars. Cuts are made on both sides, reducing the height by 15 mm.
We will use the same 40x40 mm bars as legs. We grind down their corners a little.
First, we will step back 50 mm along the edges from the top of the sidewall, since we have a boss 50 mm high. If you have a different boss, then the distance should be equal to its height.
We screwed the guide, then screwed the legs flush against the guide. The second side is done in exactly the same way.
Then it is taken longitudinal part, all this is laid on a flat surface and twisted with 50 mm self-tapping screws.
A jumper is screwed to the finished box, and then a plywood bottom.
Having installed the box on the legs, on one side we will make an amplifier for the hinge from a block.
Sofa legs
Now we will make the legs for the sofa. It will be necessary to make two legs for the seat. For this purpose we also use a 40x40 mm block. The length of the leg will be equal to the height of our box from the floor. We retreat 8 cm from the edge and grind down the edges. We treat the edge with stain to make it beautiful. We do the same with the legs and on the box.
If desired, the legs can be upholstered in leather, and a plastic heel can be nailed underneath, which will easily slide across the floor.
So we assembled the frames of the back and seat. We sew the back frame on the back side of the fiberboard. We do not trim the seat frame. In addition, we will screw blocks onto the seat frame, which will act as supports for the legs.
Seat assembly
Now let's start installing the drawer. We take our drawer and lay it flat. Where the blocks pass, you will need to make cuts. We mark a little with reserve the places where the boards will pass. Cutting depth 40 mm.
Having made cuts in the drawer, we install it on the seat and screw it on. The height of the drawer should not be less than 150 mm.
Now the legs are screwed on. Additionally, the fastening can be strengthened with a furniture screw.
We cut out this figure from the remains of plywood. Its size can be arbitrary. Then we cut out exactly the same second figure using it.
Each part is attached with 35 mm screws to the frame and leg.
The remaining fiberboard can be used to smooth out the transition by attaching it with staples.
Now you can start covering.
Drawer lining
We will cover only the front and sides of the box with fabric.
Let's start nailing the fabric from the top of the front wall. Then the side ones.
Having nailed the fabric, a strip of thick cardboard 15 mm wide is nailed on top of it.
The fabric is stretched over the body, the box is turned upside down, and the fabric is secured from below.
Making foam pillows
To complete the work, you will need 3 sheets of foam rubber, with a density of at least 30, 1 x 2 m in size and 40 mm thick. You will also need a small piece of foam rubber 20 mm thick.
We cut foam rubber for our pillows. To do this, use a sharp knife and a ruler.
We will make a second layer from foam rubber scraps, resulting in a mattress thickness of 80 mm. If the weight of the person who will sleep on this sofa is more than 90 kg, then it is better to use foam rubber with a thickness of 50 mm.
To glue foam rubber, it is best to use glue that is specifically designed for this purpose. You can also use Titan glue, which is sold in hardware stores. It will also glue the foam rubber well, but it will just take a little longer to dry.
And now, the foam rubber is glued. At the back the foam is flush with the base, and on the sides and front it protrudes 2 cm.
The protrusions of the pillow foam are made in such a way that these voids can be sealed with 2 cm thick foam rubber.
Having covered the frame with foam rubber, you can begin further work.
Seat cover
Let's consider 2 options for upholstering the sofa seat. One of them is sewing a cover on a sewing machine. Using another option, you can cover the sofa with a single piece of fabric without using a sewing machine. To do this, the fabric is assembled in the front part with an accordion and nailed in this state. From the back of the pillow, the fabric is simply laid so that the excess is inside, and also nailed.
We will use a ready-made cover with drawstrings sewn to it.
Having pulled the cover over the front part, use a wire to pull it out through drilled holes tension ropes.
The cover is adjusted to the sofa.
Having upholstered the sofa, you can start tightening. Each rope is pulled up from the reverse side so that all points are lowered to the same depth. After adjustment, the edge of the rope is stapled to the bottom of the sofa.
Back upholstery
Now you can start lining the back. Just like the seat, the foam rubber will be glued on the inside along the edge of the backrest, and its side parts will have a protrusion of 2 cm.
In those places where the mattress protrudes above the base, we glue 4 cm strips of foam rubber 2 cm thick.
We make markings on the top of the pillow for tightening, and cover the bottom with batting.
We do not sheath it all the way to the bottom, since there will be a box there and there is no need for sheathing there. In addition, if you sheathe it to the bottom, it will be inconvenient to install hinges.
Now let's put on the cover.
Having secured the cover to the back, you need to take another piece of fabric and upholster the back part over the trim.
When using a standard cover, the upholstery is done in the same way as the seat upholstery.
Hinge installation and assembly
The middle loop is screwed in the middle using self-tapping screws. When attaching the outer hinges, the lower self-tapping screw goes into the block. The upper holes are secured with screws, since there is no block in that place.
After we have screwed the hinges onto the box, we lay out our sofa in the way it should be when unfolded. That is, we put a box, we put a seat on the box. We push the seat forward as far as possible so that the bosses rest against the front wall.
Why do we lay the backrest in a lying position so that it lies flat next to the seat. You need to measure the distance from the edge of the back to the drawer. In our case it turned out to be 21 centimeters.
Turning the back over, we place the box on it and set the distance that we measured, that is, 21 cm.
Now all that remains is to screw the hinges to the back with self-tapping screws.
At this point, the assembly of the Eurobook is completed, and the product can be used.

Sofa with tick-tock mechanism
The manufacturing process of such a sofa is not much different from similar ones. The main difference is the use of a tick-tock mechanism, the operating principle of which is shown in the video.

Assembling a sofa from pallets
Is it possible to make a sofa out of pallets? Of course, you will answer, adding that it will be in the country house, in the garage or on the veranda, and in most cases this is where products made from pallets are located, but furniture can also be made from this material for a living space.
Depending on the purpose of the sofa, you need to select pallets. So, for making furniture for a cottage or garage, old pallets are suitable, but for a living space it is better to purchase whole, slightly worn pallets.
The process of making a sofa from pallets
Having purchased pallets, the first thing you need to do is inspect them, determining which one will go where. Niches for insert drawers will be cut out in our design. After preparing the pallets, they must be thoroughly sanded.
During the assembly of the sofa, the pallets are fastened with metal plates, which are screwed with self-tapping screws.
Where possible, pallets are rolled directly together.
We also cut out and install armrests from pallets.
To strengthen the fixation of the backrest, spacers are installed on the sides.
Fiberboard is used to cover the bottom, and the armrests and back are upholstered with fabric over laid foam rubber.
Linen drawers will be installed in these niches.
All that remains is to make the soft part. For this purpose, a mattress and 3 pillows were used, for which covers were sewn from the same fabric that was used for the upholstery.
Now the sofa can be used.

Making a sofa from a bathtub
Although such a structure can hardly be called a sofa, the structure still has a right to exist.
So, to make a sofa you need an old cast iron bath, which is time to throw away. The first thing you need to do is clean it of rust and debris.
Now let's unscrew the legs. If the nuts do not budge, then they need to be moistened with kerosene and waited for half an hour. If they still do not unscrew after this, the procedure should be repeated.
Let's start marking the bath. To do this you will need a marker.
Using a grinder, we cut off the unnecessary part according to the markings.
The cut must be processed by rounding the edges.
We will paint the bathtub with blue paint.
Let's make the legs yellow.
When screwing the legs to the bathtub body, use new nuts, not forgetting to add a washer.
In order for the paint to adhere well to the inside of the bathtub, it needs to be sanded.
We will paint the inside with white enamel, but you can choose any color that suits you.
To make the mattress we will use 50 mm thick foam rubber, and we will sew a cover from fabric.
All that remains is to install our mini sofa and put the mattress inside.

How to sew a cover
Making the body of a sofa is already a lot, but it is also important to trim it beautifully. Considering the fact that the fabric is expensive and cannot be bought in reserve, it is important to make the right patterns and sew a cover from them.
Which fabric to choose?
Depending on where and under what conditions the sofa will be used, a suitable fabric is selected. Let's look at a few examples.
Where is the sofa | Type of fabric |
|
In the living room, the sofa is often used, and not only by people living in the apartment. Guests often sit on it while eating, so there is a high probability that a cutlet or a piece of fish in vegetable oil will fall on it. Taking this into account, it is better to use synthetic fabrics, since they practically do not absorb moisture, including fats, and they wash well. |
|
In the bedroom, the sofa is used to sleep on or just relax. Instead of synthetic fabrics, it is better to use natural materials, or those containing at least 50% natural fibers. Flock is often used, as this type of fabric is durable, does not cause allergies and does not lint. |
Concerned about the health of the child, it is better to use cotton fabrics, not causing allergies. This type of cladding has one significant drawback - it gets dirty easily, which makes it impractical. The quality of the fabric can be improved by using Teflon impregnation.
|
In the area where you regularly eat, there is a high probability of soiling the sofa upholstery food products. Using fabric is impractical and unprofitable, so it is better to use high-quality leatherette, which is made specifically for these purposes. Low-quality leatherette will very soon begin to peel off from the base. |
How to cut
When repairing an old sofa, you can use the removed fabric as a pattern, but when upholstering a new sofa you will have to cut it yourself. How to make the right pattern?
Covering with a single piece of fabric
This technology has already been briefly mentioned in the article, but now we will describe the entire process in detail. For example, we will use a sofa seat and instead of a single piece of fabric, we will demonstrate it using a piece that was left after sewing the cover.
So, in order to upholster a separate element of upholstered furniture, you need to cut a piece of fabric that could be used to wrap the piece so that the edges can be secured from below.
Having stretched the fabric onto the parts, it needs to be stapled in front and behind. Then the hanging corner at the front is pulled tight and secured at the bottom. The fabric is laid out in folds so that they converge at one point and nailed with staples.
The back of the seat will be turned towards the wall, so you can not lay it out, but simply fold it, leaving the excess inside, and secure it in this state.
Sewing a cover for a non-folding sofa
The described technology will allow an inexperienced person to cut and sew a cover not only for a new, but also for an old sofa.
Sewing this cover took 3.5 meters of fabric and a spool of thread.
So, you need to throw the fabric over the sofa, wrong side up, positioning it in the same way as the finished cover will be located.
We will put marks so that we can then cut the fabric according to them.
In these places we cut the fabric all the way to the sofa.
The seat piece needs to be fastened to the back fabric.
Using needles, you need to pin the fabric along all the supposed seams. Instead of needles, you can use pins or sew with a basting stitch.
Having fastened all parts of the cover, remove it.
After basting the seams, put the cover on the sofa - it should fit without much effort, fitting the product being covered. If it turns out to be too tight or too loose, then this needs to be corrected by removing it.
Now you can sew the cover.
Then a frill is sewn onto it. If the cover is intended for upholstery of a sofa, then there is no need to sew on the frill, as it will be inconvenient to fix the fabric. The frill can be nailed on later if the need arises.
The result is such a cute sofa. Based on this example, you can cover any sofa, but for a new one it is better to sew separate covers for the back and seat.
As you can see, making a sofa and upholstering it at home is quite possible.
Sketches of sofas with dimensions
Sofas that can transform into a full-fledged double bed are gradually replacing standard beds from apartments, especially small ones. After all, they are more compact.
An important factor is the wide selection of finished products that can fit into any interior and decorate it. They have standard sizes and have a high price, so sometimes it becomes necessary to make a custom sofa bed with your own hands.

What is a sofa bed
The sofa bed is a symbiosis of two separate pieces of furniture. When folded, it functions as a comfortable sofa for relaxing. After transformation, it turns into a comfortable sleeping place that can easily be used by two people.
The shape of sofa beds can be corner, straight, round, modular. Thanks to the installation of a folding mechanism in the sofa, the furniture is transformed into a double bed.
Device and dimensions
All sofas come off the assembly line in standard sizes:
- permissible length – 120-190 cm;
- width – 55-70 cm;
- armrest height – 10-40 cm;
- back height – 20-70 cm;
- seat height – 40-45 cm.
Before you start making a sofa with your own hands, you need to study in detail the structure of numerous types of this product, which is directly related to the folding mechanism:
- The book is represented by metal corner plates that connect the seat, back and armrests. They have been familiar to everyone for many years. The sofa-book unfolds by lowering the backrest from a vertical position to a horizontal one. It is necessarily equipped with a linen drawer and requires some wall space for transformation. For this reason, the product is placed with a slight indentation or moved back a little before turning it into a bed.
- Click-clack is a kind of book, but instead of soft upholstery, the base is made up of a metal frame and slats. The mechanism received its name because of the characteristic sound that is heard during unfolding. The advantage of the design is the additional moving armrests, which are lowered and extend the berth. When folded, the click-clack takes up much less space than a book. In addition, the backrest can be fixed in a “half-sitting” position.
- The accordion is transformed by pushing the seat forward, which, in turn, pulls the folded backrest behind it. When folded, such a sofa takes up little space, and after unfolding it triples in size. The accordion mechanism is durable and reliable. Manufacturers often supplement models with removable covers.
- Meralat, or French folding bed, is a compact sofa. The sleeping area is hidden inside it under a seat attached to one segment. Folding occurs by lifting the seat from the back and turning it forward, supported by steel legs. One segment attached to the back of the seat pulls the others, and the sofa can increase 3 times. There are models in which the seat is made up of cushions and folds out after removing them.
- Sofas with a berth located under the seat. They are pulled forward through a roll-out mechanism. Then the segment rises up and the backrest lowers to a horizontal position.
When choosing any type of sofa for home production, you must first purchase a transformation mechanism and study the drawings for its installation and use.
How to make a sofa bed
Before you start producing a piece of furniture with a hidden sleeping place at home, you need to measure the available area for its installation and determine the maximum width of the sofa. Based on the data obtained, a detailed drawing of the product with assembly diagrams of the component elements is developed.
To understand how to make a sofa bed, consider the process of making a book.
Based on standard sizes, purchase:
- boards 190x20 cm long - 2 pcs., 80x20 cm - 2 pcs., 80x50 cm - 2 pcs., 100x50 cm - 12 pcs.;
- timber 5x5 and 6x4 cm;
- sheet of fiberboard, plywood or chipboard;
- wooden or metal legs (if provided for in the drawing);
- filler (foam rubber, spring blocks);
- fabric sheet for upholstery and lining of the frame and armrests;
- book mechanism;
In addition, you need to prepare measuring tool, pencil, scissors, screwdriver, electric jigsaw or hand saw, fasteners.
Frame assembly
It is necessary to begin production by assembling the linen drawer. To do this, fold a rectangle of 2 long and 2 short boards. Strengthen the corners of the structure with 4 bars 20x5x5 cm, placing them on the outside and moving the short side boards 5 cm inward. Additionally, 2 slats are installed across the box. The bottom of the box is sewn up with a sheet of fiberboard or plywood.
At the same stage, you need to paste over the outer part of the box with padding polyester and upholster it with fabric. For this, a long canvas is used, equal to the perimeter of the entire box, width – 30 cm.
On next stage You need to make the back and seat yourself. According to the diagram, they have the same size 189x65 cm. For production, a 6x4 cm beam is used, in which it is recommended in advance milling machine make grooves for the slats. Fastening can be done without grooves, directly on top of the timber.
Seat cover
The fabric covering of the seat follows the same pattern as the backrests. The slats are covered with foam rubber and covered with fabric. To form an even sleeping place after unfolding, the thickness of the filler should be the same in both parts.
In the places where the transformation mechanism will be located, the fabric is not nailed down, but left to hang freely.
Back upholstery
To create the soft part, foam rubber with a thickness of at least 6 cm will be used. The thicker the filler, the softer the upholstery will be. Since the lamellas are located in the center of the back, pre-cut foam sheets are glued along the perimeter directly to the beam. In order to avoid problems with installing the folding mechanism in the future, 5x10 cm pieces are immediately cut out in the corners in those places where the back and seat will be connected.
Then a piece of fabric is placed on a flat surface, which is 25-30 cm larger than the backrest. The workpiece is placed on it with foam rubber downwards. Along the perimeter of the entire product, the fabric is carefully wrapped and slightly stretched to avoid wrinkles. Fastening is done using a construction stapler.
Hinge installation and assembly
The next stage of production is the installation of the “book” mechanism. The back and seat are placed side by side, maintaining a gap of 10 mm between them. You can insert something to prevent the parts from moving towards each other. Then apply it in the corners metal device. TO wooden frame the mechanism is secured with self-tapping screws.
To install the top of the sofa, you need to pre-drill holes in the center of the side walls of the linen drawer. After placing the backrest and seat in the right place, you need to connect them with the bolts included in the kit. The holes in the mechanism and the boards must match.
Armrests
To make armrests, first assemble a frame from timber. Then a blank cut from fiberboard or plywood is screwed to it with self-tapping screws. The upper part of the part is softened with felt and foam rubber. A padding polyester is glued over the entire surface and covered with fabric.
When the armrests are completely ready, they are screwed to the bars that were previously installed in the corners of the linen drawer.
