Therefore, the choice of material should be approached not only from the side of “oh how beautiful it will look”, but also pay attention to practicality. After all, each room has its own functional areas. Let's look at the most popular options for wall decoration in an apartment, the pros, cons and photos.
Wallpaper
Wallpaper is perhaps the most popular option for decorating a room. Exist different types wallpaper: from simple paper to vinyl or even 3D. The material is selected depending on the room. For example, in the kitchen, vinyl (washable wallpaper) is better suited. This is very convenient, because at any time the walls can be cleaned of "soot" and other dirt. And in the bathroom it is better to choose moisture-resistant ones, otherwise the material will absorb moisture, it can peel off and, in addition to everything, a fungus will appear. In the nursery, there are several options for solving the problem: washable and light paper (density up to 110 g / m 3). The first option is more expensive and practical, it will be an excellent solution for various "surprises" from the most active family members. It's no secret that children are inventive people, and not all creativity can be corrected. Soon the material will still have to be re-glued. Paper ones are cheaper and here the calculation is that as soon as the wallpaper gets very dirty, they can be easily re-pasted. But this will have to be done an order of magnitude more often than with washable ones. Non-woven, liquid, textile, photo and 3D wallpapers will look great in the living room, and one or another option is selected depending on the design. The interior of the room directly depends on the interior of the material (ceramic, glass, PVC, etc.), each of which has its own characteristics. More about styling, types and other nuances.

The design of the walls in an apartment can be the most exclusive, unusual and creative interior solutions, which are an expression of fine taste and individuality.
The initial stage of any repair includes finishing the "box" of the room: walls, ceiling and floor. Only after carrying out these works in the room can you arrange furniture and decor. The design of the walls in the apartment is represented by numerous options: from ordinary painting to the original combined finish with modern stone imitation and textured plaster. Surfaces play the role of a canvas against which the decor of the room can play in a special way. After the completion of the main work on the design, they put the finishing touches in the form of decor: paintings, photographs, bas-reliefs, panels. Let us consider in detail the features of choosing a suitable finishing material, the rules for using each of them and decorations that will look unusual in the interior.
What to consider when choosing a finish
Finishing materials for each room must be selected separately. When buying, there are a number of factors to consider:
- Eco-friendly and hypoallergenic. Naturalness is now in vogue, although the development of technologies for the production of imitations has reached its peak. High-quality PVC is no longer considered unhealthy material, but its fake, concocted on hastily, may release toxic substances into the air when heated. A similar situation has developed with chipboard, fiberboard, MDF. crushed wood waste must be fastened with special glue. If earlier they used a synthetic composition, now manufacturers are trying to resort to natural resins.
- Price. The price plays an important role when choosing a material for finishing, as repairs are limited by the budget. Expensive options, as a rule, are natural, have a long service life. Those materials that are cheaper are not suitable for every interior, and can quickly become unusable.
- Thermal and moisture resistance. These indicators are of particular importance when choosing materials for finishing a bathroom or kitchen.
- Terms of operation. Of course, any apartment owner wants the interior to retain its gloss and attractiveness for a long time. The only exception will be creative people with a changeable mood, who like to change the situation every few years, but this is expensive.
- Material care. External beauty requires constant care. Before purchasing a finishing material, be sure to familiarize yourself with the intricacies of caring for it. It may be too sensitive to abrasive products or household chemicals. In this case, each time you have to buy expensive compounds or polish the surface with gentle sponges. Not everyone has time for extra chores around the house.
- Compatibility with specific rooms. This nuance is extremely important especially for the kitchen and bathroom. They are perfectly combined with tiles, washable wallpaper, brick or stone, but are completely unsuitable for wood, which without special treatment will quickly turn into a rotting hotbed of fungus and mold.
The aesthetic characteristics of the material are also taken into account: color, texture and texture. They are selected in accordance with the chosen style of the decorated room.
Methods and types of finishing
- Sheathing, that is, fixing any elements on the surface. This includes decorating with tiles, PVC panels, wooden modules (lining or timber), artificial and natural stone, brick, drywall.
- Finishing by applying a composition that changes the natural texture or color of the wall surface. This group includes painting, plastering or painting.
Now let's look at each method in detail. This information will be useful for those who intend to make repairs with their own hands, but do not know what type of finish will look beautiful and original.
Wallpaper
Wallpaper decorate the surface of the walls in any room. The material has no restrictions due to the large range of species. It arose in parallel with classic style and walked with him hand in hand until the beginning of the last century. At this time, new technologies for the production of wallpaper appeared, which made it possible to adapt them to various areas: constructivism, modern, art deco, provence, ethnicity. If earlier the material was not intended to be used in rooms with an unstable microclimate, then its new types have become more durable. Wallpaper is classified into the following types:
- Paper. The simplest and shortest option. It is produced in two types: simplex and duplex. The first wallpapers are single-layered and serve at most for several years, as they are quickly rubbed and frayed. Duplex wallpapers consist of two layers, and sometimes have a relief. They have a reasonable price, are easily fixed to the surface and allow the walls to breathe, as the paper allows air to pass through. Unfortunately, wallpapers absorb odors, are afraid of moisture and quickly fade. It is not recommended to use the material for finishing the kitchen, bathroom, hallway.
- Non-woven. They are made from the same paper, but with a slightly modified structure. To make the wallpaper denser and stronger, fabric fibers were added to them. Non-woven wallpaper lasts much longer than paper, but at the same time retained all their advantages.
- Vinyl. The wallpaper has two layers: the bottom is made of paper or non-woven, and the top is made of foamed vinyl. The option is durable, strong, can have a relief texture that will hide surface flaws. Vinyl wallpapers can be washed, their colors burn out very slowly, and thanks to the paper back, they also easily fall on the wall.
- Acrylic. They are created using a technology similar to that for vinyl. The surface of the wallpaper is decorated with foamed acrylic. Since the method of its application is spot, the material can pass air. The acrylic layer is slightly thinner than vinyl, so it is considered less durable.
- Linkrust. A special kind of two-layer wallpaper. It is made by applying a mixture of crumbs to a fabric or paper base. natural materials, which with the help of alkyd resins is brought to the state of a liquid paste. Linkrust can be dyed. It is durable, but does not allow the walls to breathe.
- Foil. original version double layer wallpaper. Their front side is covered with foil, on which an unusual pattern is applied. Foil wallpapers are very capricious, they are difficult to glue. They emphasize wall defects due to the metallized surface and are expensive.
- Fabric. They are considered wallpaper classics, the use of which is still relevant today. Matter passes air, but is very capricious in care. It collects dust and absorbs odors, does not tolerate high humidity, so wallpaper is used only in the design of living rooms and bedrooms.
- Fiberglass. Wallpaper has a relatively low cost and is very hardy. Due to the presence of long fiberglass in the structure, the material allows the walls to breathe, does not accumulate moisture and is slowly covered with dust.
- Liquid. Innovative wallpapers are sprayed over the surface of the wall and after a certain time freeze on it, forming a neat crust. Wallpapers are very easy to use, because you no longer need to dilute glue, splatter them not only on walls, but also on the floor, and carefully align each sheet.
- Natural. These include wallpaper upper layer which is made of cork, bamboo, seaweed, reed, straw or jute. They are environmentally friendly, have a pleasant to the touch texture, repel dust, thanks to special formulations on the surface and allow air to pass through. However, natural wallpapers do not withstand constant contact with moisture, and their cost leaves much to be desired.
Separately allocate photo wallpaper. They can be represented by almost any of the above types, except for liquid, natural and linkrust. The surface of the photo wallpaper is decorated with a print.
It's important to know. There are special types of vinyl wallpaper that are designed for coloring. Their color can be changed up to 10 times.
wall painting
Although coloring is considered one of the most simple ways finishes, it is readily used even in expensive interiors, where conciseness is valued above all else. The paint is suitable for loft, classic, provence, pop art, scandinavian, spanish, rustic, mediterranean, colonial styles, country and eclectic. It looks great both in the kitchen and in the children's room. Modern styles usually use combined method when a room or studio is zoned using different textures: smooth paint and embossed plaster, wallpaper, brick or stonework. All types of coloring compositions are divided into four large groups:
- Adhesive. These include casein and dextrinated. This is a special type of environmentally friendly paint, which is made exclusively from natural ingredients without any harmful chemicals. They do not tolerate contact with moisture, therefore they are only suitable for interior decoration. For example, painting a facade from the outside with adhesive paints will inevitably lead to their cracking and “sliding” from the surface.
- Water or emulsion. These include acrylic, latex, dispersion, silicone and polyvinyl acetate. The composition of paints contains pigments, a binder base and water, which form an emulsion. It is easily washed off hands and clothes until completely dry, but it does not react to contact with water in a hardened form. Emulsion paints fit well on any surface except glossy, and they are also not recommended to be applied to unprimed metal, as it can lead to corrosion. Paints dry quickly and do not exude bad smell. They are not resistant to frost, therefore, compositions for decorating external walls in private houses cannot be used. Paints almost do not fade, allow the surface to breathe.
- silicate. make mineral compositions glass based. They are mainly used for external work due to their increased resistance to temperature extremes. Silicate paints do not adhere to smooth surfaces: ceramics, metal, glass, stone, plastic. Their application to the plaster of the same name is considered ideal. Silicate paints are almost not washed off. Their service life will be calculated in years. Of the shortcomings of the composition, only the lack of the ability to protect the surface from moisture is noted.
- Alkyd. Paints are used to color plaster, metal and wood. They are non-toxic and allow the surface to breathe. Compositions are made on the basis of alkyd resins. The group includes only two types: oil and enamel. The first ones are created on the basis of olive and are used for external work, since during prolonged drying the composition releases harmful volatile substances. Enamel is made from lacquer. They can be used in any room, as the composition is not afraid of moisture. The colors have a nice sheen.
Coloring is considered the most simple option decorating walls on a par with plaster. It is also often seen as a quick and cheap way to make temporary repairs.
Decorative plaster
Although initially plaster was used only to correct the surface of walls before applying the base material, now it has also been used as a finish. It is classified into the following types:
- Mineral. The material has high vapor permeability, does not allow moisture to pass through and is durable, since it is based on cement, lime or gypsum. It is recommended to use mineral plaster for decorating concrete, brick or stone walls. Only the basic white color of the composition is presented on the market. If you need to get a certain shade, then pigments are added to the plaster when diluted. In addition, special additives with sparkles or stone chips for texture are sold.
- Acrylic. It is based on synthetic polymers. The plaster has elasticity in the hardened state, therefore, when the walls are deformed, it does not crack. High moisture resistance allows the material to be used for finishing wet rooms (kitchen, bathroom). Initially, the surface of acrylic plaster is smooth, it can be textured manually or with the help of special additives that are sold in hardware stores. Unfortunately, it ignites easily, so it is not recommended to apply the composition to wood.
- Silicone. Relatively new material, which does not allow moisture to pass through, has high elasticity and vapor permeability, is capable of self-cleaning when used outside the house. The plaster is based on silicone resins. It has a high cost, which pays off with a long service life (more than 20 years). In terms of the number of color variations, the composition has become a champion, since there are more than 6 thousand of them.
- silicate. It is based on liquid glass, which quickly hardens. Working with the material will require skill. Silicate plaster is durable, elastic, does not allow moisture to pass through, but at the same time it is expensive and has a limited range of colors.
Now relevant in interior design is considered Venetian plaster. It is sometimes also called "seamless marble", as the composition imitates the surface of this particular stone. The plaster can be acrylic, silicate or silicone. It belongs to the textured types, which are applied by spraying, using a roller or spatula. You can get a relief thanks to mineral crumb fillers, or by working with special tools. Stucco is considered a stylistic all-rounder and suits most trends in design.
Wood wall cladding
Wall cladding with wood is only suitable for rooms with a stable microclimate. It is not recommended to trim the kitchen and bathroom with wood. Of the variety of varieties of material deserve attention:
- Plywood. It has a rather dull surface texture, so it needs to be painted.
- Clapboard. Long modules are suitable for Russian, Scandinavian or Scandinavian themed decor. country style, provence, chalet.
- Veneer. It is thin sheets of wood. It has flexibility, original texture and color, used as a final finish.
- Cork. Soft, pleasant to the touch material allows you to create an incredibly cozy, homely interior.
- Bar. The material has a rough look, so it is used exclusively in a rustic style.
- An array of wood. Differs in high cost. Strong and durable material suitable for a range of classic styles.
You can even sheathe the walls with different-sized boards, which will have an original, textured look. A similar design is suitable for eco-style and Provence. In rare cases, surfaces are trimmed with thin wood cuts. Complement the unusual decoration with the help of a "path" in the room.
Ceramic tile
Ceramic tiles are traditionally used to decorate kitchens and bathrooms. The material is moisture resistant, durable, resistant to household chemicals and abrasive compounds. Depending on the production technology, tiles are classified into two large groups:
- Bicottura. The tile is subjected to double firing due to the application of an additional layer of enamel. Use material for interior decoration.
- Monocottura. Subjected to one firing. Some types are used for exterior decoration, as they have frost resistance.
The tile may have a protective and decorative layer of glaze. Such material has an attractive appearance and has a reflective effect. There are also varieties such as cotto, monoporosa, porcelain stoneware, majolica, clinker. The latter option has a particularly dense base, which is obtained by pressing. Clinker is one of the most durable types of tiles. Porcelain stoneware or gres is obtained from several types of clay and fireclay bricks. It is considered a high quality alternative to natural stone.
Decorative rock
Decorative stone is used for finishing kitchens, bedrooms, living rooms and hallways. The material has no restrictions in use. Quartz, acrylic look and porcelain stoneware, conglomerate have high strength. plaster decorative rock is considered the only imitation that is afraid of moisture and mechanical stress. The material, in comparison with the original, has a lower weight, which allows it to be used both for decorating the entire wall and for partial decoration (the area around the doors, window openings, niches or accent elements). Decorative stone is flexible, has a rich assortment of colors and textures. It can even be used to finish plasterboard partitions. The stone organically flows into a number of ethnic styles: Spanish, English, French, Italian, Mediterranean.
Wall panels
Panels are considered to be a universal material used to decorate walls, ceilings and objects of complex configuration (columns, pilasters, partitions, arches, niches). They are easy to mount, provide an opportunity to replace a damaged module with a new one without violating the integrity of neighboring ones. If the panels were not damaged, then reuse is allowed. Depending on the form, the material is divided into three groups:
- Sheet.
- Tiled.
- Rack.
They make panels from wood, plastic or mixtures based on forest industry waste (MDF, chipboard, fiberboard). In the first case, the material can be used in rooms with high humidity only if a layer of protective wax has been applied to its surface. Fiberboard and MDF can be used for finishing kitchens, but it is better to leave chipboard for living rooms and bedrooms. PVC panels are universal, they are characterized by durability, lack of sensitivity to moisture or temperature changes and low cost. Of the minuses, only fragility and possible toxicity are noted if the plastic was made with violations of technology.
PVC panels are suitable for modern styles where plastic would look appropriate. MDF, chipboard and fiberboard harmonize in technical areas in which the use of wooden surfaces is encouraged: classic, modern, minimalism, provence, country.
Drywall
The use of drywall is advisable in cases where the walls have obvious irregularities or you need to give the surface a special configuration. The material is easily cut, mounted, and the work itself is considered clean and does without a protective film on the floor and soiled clothes. After finishing, drywall can be painted, plastered or wallpapered, covered with decorative stone. You can not use only heavy materials as a finishing design, since the base itself is light in weight. For cladding the bathroom and kitchen, a special moisture-resistant type of drywall is used. Finishing material is used for various styles: minimalism, high-tech, colonial, Scandinavian, modern, fusion and even gothic or Moorish. Versatility comes from the freedom to choose a secondary surface.
From the author: welcome, dear reader. As a rule, articles on the practical part of the work are published on our website. But today, in fairness, we decided to make an exception and talk about how to finish the walls other than wallpaper in the bedroom, in the hall, in the hallway, in the kitchen or in another room.
The topic is really interesting and worthy of detailed consideration. After all, situations often arise when, for some reason, you simply don’t want to use wallpaper in the interior. There can be quite a few reasons for this:
- First, there is the issue of originality. Sometimes it seems that wallpaper is already somehow banal, so there is a desire to bring something original to the interior. In general, I want something "such";
- Second, it's a matter of functionality. In some places, such as in the kitchen, wallpaper may simply be an inappropriate solution. Especially when it comes to working area, which, as a rule, is finished with wall tiles;
- Thirdly, the question of aesthetics. Perhaps, in the style of the interior in your room, the wallpaper will be very, very inappropriate. For example, you decide to choose the Loft style for decorating a room. In this style, the wallpaper will, as they say, "neither to the village nor to the city."
And so on. So, today we are going to talk about different styles interior, about in which cases the wallpaper will be really inappropriate and about what material you can choose for wall decoration other than wallpaper. In general, after reading the article, you will most likely decide which of the finishing materials to choose for your interior.
As is customary on our repair and construction portal, we will consider the material in a consistent and structured manner.
wall painting
If you do not want to glue wallpaper on the walls, then why not paint them? This solution is not costly or difficult to implement. To properly paint the walls in the hallway, in the kitchen or in the room, it is not at all necessary to be experienced in the painting craft.
But, nevertheless, some nuances must be taken into account.
First, you need to know what paint to choose for the walls. From myself, I would recommend a water-based composition (the well-known “water-based emulsion”). Why is she so good? This paint does not have a sharp specific smell and is harmless to health. Therefore, everyone can work with it, even people whose bodies are prone to allergic reactions.
In addition, the paint interacts well with almost any kind of surface. A wall painted with “water emulsion” becomes resistant to moisture, so it can be wiped with a damp cloth when cleaning and even washed: nothing bad will happen to it.
Secondly, the surface must be carefully prepared before painting. Walls must be cleaned of old, peeling paint, old wallpaper, plaster that is about to collapse, and so on. Then apply to the surface antifungal agent(antiseptic). This is especially true for those rooms in which there is a risk of increased humidity. Then - apply a layer of penetrating primer. It is necessary for better adhesion of the working surface and finishing materials. Next - apply a layer of putty (it may be necessary to plaster on the lighthouses) and apply finishing plaster. After it dries, you can start painting the walls.
If you decide to paint the walls water-based paint, - it will be useful for you to familiarize yourself with the presented video on preparing the walls for painting or wallpapering.
Thirdly, - on our repair and construction portal there is a separate article on how to use water-based paint. Don't let the fact that the article is about ceilings fool you. The fact is that the technology for painting walls and ceilings is not fundamentally different, and if you decide to start painting, then you should definitely familiarize yourself with this information.
To summarize, we can say that wall painting is a universal solution for an apartment, house or office. Among other things, paint is also good because it is possible to choose any color scheme that suits your interior. Of course, no one has canceled the rules of good artistic taste, but no one limits you in your choice.
Decorative plaster
Another worthy alternative to wallpaper can be decorative wall plaster. Now we will list several reasons why you may choose this finishing material.
- durability. Most likely, plaster applied to the wall will last you longer than wallpaper, which is changed about once every 10-15 years;
- versatility. The material is suitable for use in the living room, bedroom, hallway or even in the kitchen. In addition, plaster will be an excellent solution for most interior design styles: from classic to minimalism and hi-tech;
- original appearance. The pattern applied to the wall will be unique, since it will not be possible to copy it exactly. Actually, this material is designed for this;
- ease of application. To work with decorative wall plaster, professional skills are not required. It is quite possible to do the work on your own and with your own hands;
- ecoholicity. The material is environmentally friendly and safe for the health of people and pets.
Decorative plaster for walls may differ in the type of filler:
- textured. The most affordable stucco finish available. Stones, sawdust or even mica can act as a filler;
- structural. It does not fundamentally differ from the first option, but it is filled with quartz particles. The surface will not be as structurally pronounced as when using textured plaster, but you can, for example, use larger filler elements that will achieve the effect of a mosaic laid out on the surface of the wall;
- Venetian plaster. It is filled with marble particles, thanks to which we get a visually even, smooth, even shiny surface. In appearance, such a wall will look as if it is entirely made of marble.
decorative canvas
I dare to suggest that this method of wall decoration is rooted in the era of the late Middle Ages or the Renaissance (Renaissance). Already then there was big choice draperies for wall decoration in rich houses and palaces. What can we say about our era? ..
The modern market of finishing materials offers huge selection various wall coverings. If your idea is to recreate the interior in the style of the European Renaissance, then fabrics with a variety of highly visible patterns will suit you. If you consider yourself to be more adherents modern style design, - a fabric on which the patterns will not be so pronounced visually is suitable for you.
It would seem like a great finishing solution, right? In fact, it also has its drawbacks. Do not forget that dust will settle on the walls, which the fabric absorbs very well. It will not be possible to remove it with a damp cloth, as, for example, from a wall painted with a water-based composition. Most likely, the walls will have to be vacuumed regularly, which is not very convenient. And not to say that this method is a budget solution. As we understand, it cannot be called practical either.
Decorative rock
One of the most common and practical solutions. This material is strong, durable, aesthetically attractive and safe for health. But, of course, finishing the entire area of \u200b\u200bthe walls of the room in this way is not the best solution (unless, of course, this is not implied by the artistic design).
Let's put it this way, if you want to create coziness in a room, then it would be right to stone separate zones in the room with stone or make, in a way, "islands" of stone. The main thing here is a sense of proportion, because if you overdo it with a stone, then the finishing material will visually weigh down the interior of the living space. But if you are looking for a solution for interior design in a cafe, bar or restaurant, you can take note of the abundance of decorative stone.
clapboard
Here we mean not a plastic lining, but one that is made of natural wood. Of the advantages of this finishing material, I propose to highlight the following:
- environmental friendliness. Wood is not only an environmentally friendly material. It helps to create a special microclimate in the room, so to speak, “its own atmosphere”. Therefore, from this point of view, the lining is suitable for decorating the walls of any of the rooms;
- incredibly attractive, original appearance. The structure and shade of wood will differ depending on the selected type of wood;
- strength / durability / functionality of the material;
- ease at installation work. Definitely installation. wooden lining cannot be called a pleasant rest, but, nevertheless, this type of activity is somewhat more pleasant and easier than, say, applying plaster to the walls or installing decorative stone;
- additional soundproofing;
- additional thermal insulation.
With all the advantages of the material, keep in mind that wood is susceptible to moisture and temperature. This, by the way, is especially true if you are engaged in finishing. But now we are talking about living quarters. If there is a risk of high humidity (and without it, too - for prevention), the tree must be properly processed. An antiseptic agent will protect it from fungal formations, the use of which should not be neglected.
Cork
Yes, indeed, cork is widely used for wall decoration in residential (and non-residential) rooms. Moreover, it has been used for quite a long time and very successfully. The coating is natural, i.e. - environmentally friendly, aesthetically attractive and durable. Of course, this design option will not be to everyone's taste, and it will not suit every interior.
But the purpose of the article is not to persuade you to use any particular material, but to tell you about the advantages and disadvantages of each of them. So, if you are looking for a light (both in terms of weight and in terms of installation) material that would serve you for many years, you can safely use a cork - you will not regret it. Perhaps the lack of material is its relatively high price, but it is fully justified.
Tile
It's no secret that the walls are trimmed tiles. As a rule, to this method finishes are resorted to in the bathroom, toilet or kitchen. This is logical. A tile is a very practical finishing material for rooms with high humidity and those where there is a need for frequent wet cleaning.
Modern market building materials does not limit us in the choice of tiles. If desired, you can choose any shape, texture and color, choose a pattern for any style of interior - from baroque to modern.
So, if your plans include renovating a bathroom or kitchen, then you simply cannot find the best finishing material. In addition, gluing wallpaper in the bathroom (and in the kitchen too) is not the most practical and expedient solution. Most likely, the wallpaper will become unusable very quickly, but will serve you for many years.
Laminate
Well, what kind of heresy?! - you may be surprised. Actually, this is not heresy. Yes, the solution is rather non-standard, but in some circumstances it is very appropriate. No one says that you need to finish the whole room with laminate, but separate wall- why not... yes.
Of course, for these purposes, you can choose the least wear-resistant floor covering (which we have successfully reclassified as a wall covering). The main thing here is the appearance of laminated boards that could harmoniously fit into the interior of your room. If you decide to resort to this design option, then you can be 100% sure of the durability of the coating!
MDF
Material for wall decoration, which, along with the rest, is quite popular. Not as wide as, say, wallpaper, painting or, but still.
MDF panels can imitate many materials, so they can be used to recreate almost any interior. And, again, it is not at all necessary to sheathe all the walls of an MDF room. It is enough to finish only one wall in the room in this way to get the effect that you would like.
Lack of finishing
Yes, this option also exists and should not be discounted. But this is not at all about giving up finishing materials to save the budget. Here it is necessary to pursue some kind of artistic design - then the unfinished building materials will look appropriate and organic.
Here we are talking about special interior styles, for example, such a style as Loft. This style originated in the middle of the 20th century in the USA, and now it has safely reached us. The main idea of the loft is to recreate the interior, which would be similar to the interior of an old factory or other production premises converted into a studio, exhibition hall, art workshop and so on. The loft is especially popular among representatives of the creative intelligentsia.
Again, the idea is not to completely abandon the finishing materials. But in some places you can leave unfinished brick wall or OSB board. Often, public places, such as bars, exhibition halls, shops, and so on, are decorated in a similar style. But for decorating a kitchen or office, this style is also perfect. Don't be afraid to experiment, but don't overdo it either.
Conclusion
I really hope that you have got a three-dimensional idea of the finishing materials alternative to the usual wallpaper. Creative success to you in the design of the interior of the home and more creative ideas that you will bring to life.

How to solve the problem: wall decoration in the apartment - 5 ideas for your peace of mind
Modern finish walls in the apartment - one of milestones any repair. A well-chosen type of decoration will help not only make the interior of your dreams come true, but also save money and time.
And so that you are not based only on the feeling of “oh, but this looks nothing” in the process of choosing a finish, I suggest that you familiarize yourself with the most popular and proven materials with their advantages and disadvantages.
What to choose
During the repair process, many may encounter the problem of choosing the right options. It is not surprising, now there are a lot of materials, each of them has its own advantages, it is not clear what to buy. I hope my article will greatly facilitate your task, and you will not regret the money spent.
Idea 1. Wallpaper
For many years, wallpapers still do not want to give the palm in the competition for the most popular finishing material. The range is more than impressive: here you can find relatively inexpensive paper ones, more expensive and durable vinyl ones, and even wallpapers with a 3D effect.
When buying wallpaper, you should consider what room they are intended for:
- So, what is the best way to finish the kitchen? Of course, vinyl washable wallpaper, which is not afraid of drops of fat and soot.
- For a nursery, you can stop at light paper or vinyl wallpaper. The second ones are good because it will be possible to remove all the artistic “masterpieces” of your child from them. The first option captivates with its cheapness and the ability to simply replace them with others after a certain time as it gets dirty.
- If you still decide to decorate the bathroom with wallpaper (not the most the best solution), then it is better to buy moisture resistant material. Otherwise, do not be surprised at the appearance of the fungus in the places of the main accumulation of water drops.
- For the range is not much limited. Depending on the interior, you can opt for non-woven, liquid, fabric, photo and 3D wallpapers.
Sticking
When all the options for decorating the walls in the apartment have been reviewed, and the choice fell on the wallpaper, it's time to figure out how to glue them. This must be done according to the following scheme:
- Remove old wallpaper, also clean the walls of the glue on which they were held.
- Use a spatula or a special brush to remove all previous layers of plaster, whitewash or paint.
- Level the surface with putty to give it an ideal (or so) smoothness, primed.
- After the final drying of the primer, you can begin the gluing process.
- If you purchased wallpaper without a pattern, then they should be cut into strips of the same size, while leaving gaps of 2-2.5 cm on both sides. If a pattern is applied to the coating, then the wallpaper will have to be combined according to the pattern. In this case, the consumption of materials will be more.
- Next, the wallpaper must be smeared with glue and applied to the wall.
- When the material is attached to the wall, it must be well smoothed from top to bottom and remove air bubbles.
Here is such a small instruction that may be useful to you in the repair process.
Idea 2. Paint
Previously, paint was most often used for cladding the outside of the house, but over time it moved to apartments. Among its main advantages, I can include:
- a huge range of colors;
- variety of textures;
- the ability to decorate the walls with any pattern using special figured rollers and special tools.
The most popular options include the following types of paint:
- alkyd;
- adhesive;
- water emulsion.
I will analyze each of them in more detail.
- Oil and enamel paints, which are alkyd. This finishing material is excellent for both exterior and interior decoration. Additional benefits include UV and moisture resistance.
Of the minuses, I can single out helplessness against acid and a not very attractive indicator of fire safety.
- Adhesive paint, or rather its composition, is much more gentle for the body in the process of decorating walls. In addition, it perfectly passes air, which is important for children's rooms and bedrooms.
- Water-based paints are easily soluble in water, which makes them easy to use with your own hands. They lay down perfectly in an even dense layer and look great on matte surfaces.
Just keep in mind that on walls previously opened with varnish or adhesive paint, the water-based emulsion will not hold.
Application features
Wall painting is as follows:
- First, the joints with the floor and ceiling are glued with masking tape to protect them from contamination.
- This is followed by the process of cleaning from the remnants of the previous coating, sealing cracks and coating the wall with a primer.
- If necessary, you will need to walk in some places with sandpaper for the surface.
- Next, you should dilute the paint to the desired consistency and proceed directly to the application.
You can use the brush in any direction: from top to bottom, from left to right or crosswise. The main thing is not to combine these methods with each other.
Idea 3. Plaster
For many, plaster may be associated with preliminary leveling of the wall before the main repair work. Only now decorative plaster breaks into the top of the list called " modern materials for finishing the walls in the apartment "and is beginning to be in great demand.
Depending on the appearance and characteristics, plaster is divided into:
- mineral;
- acrylic;
- silicate.
Why is decorative plaster so good? At least in that it allows you to create a beautiful imitation of almost any material on the walls. Even a couple of simple strokes with a spatula can advantageously update the interior of the room.
Decorative trim has at least several advantages:
- The ability to create an imitation of a more expensive material (granite, textured wallpaper, metal).
- A wide range of textures and colors.
- The ability to carry out wet cleaning of the coating after its application.
- The ability to hide all sorts of bumps and flaws on the walls.
- No need to level the walls to perfect condition before decorating.
- Long service life. With proper care, plaster can last from 35 to 60 years (impressive numbers, right?)
- Such finishing methods will ideally fit into almost any interior.
But, as you know, in a barrel of honey you can not do without a fly in the ointment. Despite all the advantages of plaster, it also has its drawbacks. Among them stand out:
- The price of plaster most often exceeds the average cost of wallpaper at least one and a half times .
- Improper application of the material significantly reduces its service life. Therefore, in the absence of certain skills and experience, it is worth paying extra for the work of specialists.
- The plaster is not so easy to remove if necessary.
Idea 4. Plastic panels
Decorative wall decoration is a real testing ground for all kinds of experiments with colors and textures. So why not think about a rather unusual, but no less bright version of the lining? I can refer decorative plastic panels to it, which every year more and more often appear in modern interiors.
- When installing panels, it becomes possible to insulate the walls, which is definitely important in the cold season.
- With the presence plastic panels you will no longer need to think about how to finish the corners in the bathroom, because the material perfectly tolerates moisture and prevents the appearance of fungus.
- On sale you can find panels with a variety of parameters, texture and appearance.
- This finish is very easy to install and does not require special skills.
- Installation of panels does not require preliminary cleaning and alignment of the walls.
- Material creates good sound insulation due to the small distance between the panel and the wall itself.
- The cost of panels is suitable even for the most modest budget.
- Plastic panels look very similar standard sheets plywood. Moreover, if there is a flat wall, they can be fixed simply with ordinary liquid nails.
Among the main disadvantages of such coverage, three important factors can be distinguished:
- The panels are not made from natural materials, and accordingly, in small doses, they can release toxic substances.
- Such a coating is difficult to attribute to durable, since it does not tolerate mechanical stress quite well.
- For lovers original solutions special 3D panels were created. According to their characteristics, they are similar to ordinary ones, but they win against their background due to their unusual convex shape.
Despite the visual appeal of 3D panels, I would not recommend covering all the walls of the room with them. But to make one of them accent is a very sensible decision.
Idea 5. Drywall
Finishing materials for cladding uneven walls in fact, they can not boast of a wide range. Not every coating will look perfect with a "bumpy" base. But this nuance does not apply to drywall.
Among its distinguishing features are:
- In any condition of the walls, in the end you will get a perfectly smooth coating. Even if you decide to change the interior, you will have at least 4 smooth surfaces at hand.
- Drywall makes it possible to additionally insulate the room, while the thickness of the insulation will depend solely on your capabilities and desires. According to the same scheme, you can install waterproofing, thereby solving problems with sound insulation.
- The process of installing sheets is not so complicated, and it is quite possible to do it yourself.
Agree, the benefits are quite significant. But I can’t just praise, it’s time to move on to tangible shortcomings:
- Such a design would be inappropriate in a room with high humidity.
- If you install drywall sheets relatively far from the wall, you won't be able to place heavy objects on them.
Alternative Solutions
Above, I have described far from all the options for finishing. The list includes only the most popular and popular. But my article would be incomplete without mentioning, albeit not so common, but no less spectacular ways of decorating walls.
Tiled outrage
Until recently, I (I think, like many of you) considered tiles to be a material, the lot of which is the bathroom and kitchen. Latest fashion trends they point to the opposite. Tiles, with proper handling, can be successfully applied in the interior of the hallway, or what the hell is not joking - the living room.
Why is it worth at least thinking about using tiles outside the kitchen? There are several reasons:
- The material is very durable and easy to clean.
- Tiles are characterized by fairly good sound insulation, which will come in handy with thin Khrushchev walls.
- This material is fireproof, so in terms of fire safety he is practically unmatched.
- The range of colors allows you to decorate any decor.
Everything is clear with the pros, are there any disadvantages to this coverage? But, alas, there are drawbacks. Among them:
- the complete inability to lay tiles with high quality without the help of professionals;
- ceramics can hardly be called one of the most budget options, but it is hard to deny that quality tiles looks luxurious and fully deserves its hefty price tag.
By the way, here's some more useful information which may come in handy during the repair process. Ceramic tiles divided into 5 types depending on the scope of its application:
- Tiles exclusively for wall decoration.
- Material for floor covering(excluding walking on it in street shoes).
- For office and residential premises, in which there is not particularly a large crowd of people.
- Tiles for use in high traffic areas.
- Versatile material suitable for laying anywhere.
Why not stone?
Decorative stone, despite all its showiness and beauty, is not included in the TOP-3 of the most popular materials. The point is its high cost, which is not available to everyone. But besides this, decorative stone (or brick) has a lot of advantages, which I have no right not to mention.
- This material is very durable, its service life is approximately 50 years..
- Not having special skills, but having studied good instruction, even a simple layman will cope with the installation of the coating.
- All kinds of additives, which are now part of the decorative stone, allow you to create a coating with all kinds of textures.
- Such material is completely environmentally friendly.
- The stone brings originality and unusual notes to the interior.
Of course, artificial brick or stone cannot avoid comparison with its natural counterpart. Against this background, it has only three drawbacks:
- Its shelf life is still less than natural analogues.
- He is inferior to them in strength.
- In large quantities, decorative stone cannot be used, as it makes the interior heavier.
What is linkrust?
I confess that I learned about such a magical material with a strange name relatively recently. For the unenlightened, like me, I will explain: linkrust is a material in the manufacturing process of which a thin layer of gel based on linseed oil or alkyd resin with a filler (cork or wood flour) is applied to a dense paper or fabric base.
One of the main features of the coating is that it mixes equally well with both water-based and oil paints.
If at first linkrust was positioned as a more affordable alternative to expensive stucco, now it is used to implement the most unusual and original ideas.
What gives us the use of material?
- Unusual and original appearance of the walls.
- Environmental friendliness, which is based on the use of natural resins and additives.
- Plasticity, which allows the linkrust to successfully adapt even to uneven surfaces.
- Resistance to high temperatures.
- High strength index.
- Durability.
And by tradition, after describing the advantages, I will point out the obvious disadvantages, which, of course, are:
- Installation of linkrust can hardly be called simple, and it requires special skill.
- Low temperatures are detrimental to such material.
- After the installation of the coating, it becomes necessary to constantly maintain its original appearance. Accordingly, periodically you will have to finish it with paint or varnish.
Finally
I can't tell you the only right way to cover the walls in your apartment, it's simply impossible. But I can (and tried to) be objective about the options available, you just need to choose the one that suits you best. If you are still in doubt, then perhaps the video in this article will make your choice easier.
