Features of care and protection against pests
After the flowers are planted, they need regular care and watering.
It is important!
Container plants are best watered with moderate amounts of water. Remember to loosen the soil frequently to allow air to reach their roots.
Flowers in flowerpots need additional feeding. For this, mineral fertilizers are used in the form of:
- granules (characteristically slow action, it is enough to apply 1 time per season);
- solutions (top dressing is done during watering, the recommended frequency is 1 time in 10 days).
It is necessary to remove dried inflorescences in time. This improves the appearance of plants and prolongs their flowering period.
Heat-loving species (fuchsias, pelargoniums, coleus, etc.) for the winter should be transferred to a room with a temperature not lower than + 5 ° С.

The area around the house is the calling card of any site. Its design is always given Special attention. Outdoor flowerpots with a variety of plants are an excellent decor option. With their help, you can create whole compositions of flowers, or place accents throughout the site.
Pros and cons
Flowerpots as a landscape decor, involving the manufacture with my own hands have both positive and negative sides.
The benefits include:
- Transportability. Thanks to their easy movement around the territory, you can create new compositions, and during bad weather or in winter, transfer plants to the attic or veranda.
- The ability to decorate a yard where the ground is covered with concrete or tiles, and planting plants in the ground is not possible.
- fencing function. With the help of street containers, you can divide the site into zones, make a cozy corner.
- The ability to create favorable conditions in each flowerpot for an individual plant: special soil, fertilizer, watering.
- Low cost. Compared to many other garden décor items, containers can save you money. Do-it-yourself products allow you to do this doubly.
- Space saving. In containers, you can place not only flower beds, but also cultivated plants, use them instead of beds for growing cucumbers, tomatoes, herbs, berries. This is especially true for small areas in order to save space.
Flowerpots for the street have practically no drawbacks, however, depending on the material, several of them can be distinguished:
- fragility. Refers to products made of plastic and wood.
- Plastic flowerpots are harmful to health, as they can release hazardous substances into the air.
- Ceramic products very fragile.
- Plants in ceramic and metal containers require frequent watering due to the excessively rapid drying of the earth.
- Big weight. This disadvantage is possessed by products made of concrete and stone.
Shapes and sizes
Outdoor flowerpots can be of a wide variety of shapes, sizes and colors. By making them with your own hands, you can be sure that you will get a product that meets all the required criteria. And its appearance may be due to the material used and manufacturing technology.
When choosing a size for a future flowerpot, you should consider the space on the site.
In a small area, large, massive containers will look ridiculous and cumbersome. Bulk plant compositions should also be avoided. At the same time, in a spacious area, small, modest containers will get lost and will not fulfill their decor function.
The shape of the container can be any. It is limited only by technical possibilities and imagination. If the site is planned to be designed in a certain style, then it will dictate the appearance of the street decor.
Choosing a material
The choice of material is determined by such factors as the cost of the finished product, the features of its manufacture, the availability necessary tools for crafting and craftsmanship. Decorative flowerpots for a summer residence or a garden can be made with your own hands from wood, concrete, stone, plastic, ceramics, metal, or from improvised materials.
Wood
It belongs to short-lived materials, since on the street the product is constantly exposed to moisture. Such a product must be processed special means preventing decay. In this case, it can be used for several years. The most common version of a container for flowers made of wood is to make it based on a stump. The inner part is scraped out in the trunk, holes are made for drainage, a plant is placed inside. It is better if the earth is first poured into another container, and then placed inside the stump.
Concrete or plaster
Simple and inexpensive materials to work with. Concrete and gypsum products are durable, practical, resistant to impact environment. With their help, you can make almost any shape of a flower girl. However, it will have a lot of weight, so it is better to do it right away at the place where its further location on the site is planned. Peat can be added to cement as a variety when mixing concrete. In this case, a hypertuff product will be obtained, which outwardly practically does not differ from real tuff or sandstone.
Stone
Stone vases are heavy and expensive. They look very presentable, have a long service life. The process of making a stone container is quite complicated, so it is better to purchase such a product ready-made.
Plastic
Plastic products are characterized by a short service life and a simple appearance. However, they are inexpensive and come in a wide variety of colors, shapes, and sizes. Plastic containers are usually purchased ready-made.
Pottery or clay
These flowers are fragile and break easily. A ceramic or clay product can be made with your own hands, if you follow the technology correctly, including firing.
Metal
Metal vases are durable and will last a long time. Forged products look very original, although they have a rather high price. The process of manufacturing a metal flower girl is laborious and requires special equipment.
improvised materials
The choice of improvised means for making a flowerpot is limited only by imagination. A container for flowers can be made from a huge number of things that are usually unnecessary in the household: tires, bottles, old barrels, carts, baskets, buckets, tires, foam, rubber boots and bicycles. Such products will be original and unique.
Master classes
From improvised materials you can make a beautiful flowerpot.
from wood
The easiest way is a flowerpot from a piece of a sawn tree or stump. Birch is best suited for this. Of the tools for work, you will need a drill and a chisel.
- Several holes need to be drilled on the surface of the stump. The more of them, the closer they are to each other, the easier it will be further work.
- scrape inner part stump to the desired depth.
- Place a container with earth in the recess.
- Treat the entire surface of the tree with a special anti-rotting agent.
In addition to the stump, you can use ordinary boards or timber to make a wooden flower girl. In this case, you will need a hacksaw and a hammer.
If the source material is boards, four shields must be put together separately from them and connected to each other. It turns out a rectangular container that needs to be processed protective agent and decorate as you wish.
If timber is supposed to be the material, the flowerpot is assembled according to the principle of a log house, like a designer.
The bars are cut to the desired size, and on each side a drink is made to half their thickness.
Then the whole structure is assembled and fastened with nails and self-tapping screws. The finished product is polished and coated with a protective agent.
Concrete
On the basis of cement, flower girls of various shapes and sizes can be made. For this:
- It is necessary to prepare a form, most often it is plastic, which suits in all respects.
- Prepare the mixture to fill the form. It consists of cement, agroperlite and peat in proportions of 2: 1: 2. All components are poured into a suitable container and diluted with water to a thick consistency. The mixture turns out to be a lot, it is very difficult to stir such an amount, so it is worth doing it in several approaches, dividing the solution into parts. To make the flower container colored, dyes are added to it while mixing the solution.
- Line the bottom of the mold with cellophane. The main thing is that its surface is smooth, without wrinkles. Any unevenness will be imprinted on the finished flowerpot.
- Put the prepared mixture on cellophane. To begin, fill in the bottom, making it about 5 cm thick. To control the depth, you can use a toothpick or a straw. Previously, a cork wrapped in polyethylene is laid on the bottom of the future flowerpot to provide a drainage hole.
- Then spread the solution over the entire remaining surface of the mold.
- When the form is completely filled, it must be left for 10 days to solidify. If the mixture dries out, it must be moistened with water.
- Pass the finished container with a metal brush over the entire surface to remove all irregularities, and give a slight relief to too smooth places.
- After that, the flowerpot should be washed with water, dried, wrapped in foil and left for about a week.
- When the product brightens, you can remove the film and put it in the right place. The weight of such a flower girl is very large, so it is better to deal with the process of its manufacture immediately at the place where its further location is planned.
To increase the strength of the structure, a metal frame can be inserted into the concrete layer.
In addition, crushed fiberglass can be added to the composition of the mixture for the same purpose.
From car tires
Car tires that have not been used for their intended purpose are a material that often lies idle or is thrown away as garbage. From them you can easily make a bright and original decor for a garden or a summer residence. It is better to choose winter tires without studs, they are softer and thinner.
To make a flower container in the form of a flower, you need:
- Draw the desired outline on the sidewall of the tire.
- Cut out the detail. To do this, you can use a rubber knife or a jigsaw.
- Next, you need to turn the tire inside out. To do this, cuts are made throughout the tire every 5-10 cm.
- The vase is ready. It remains to decorate it as you wish, fill it with earth and plant a plant.
From plastic containers
Very easy way to make flower pot- take as a basis a plastic bottle, barrel or any other container. It is enough to cut a hole in it for planting a plant, make several drainage cuts and fill it with earth.
However, in the case of a plastic pot, you should take care of its stability. If the container is small, its bottom can simply be covered with small stones or pebbles. If we are talking about a large container, it is better to make it stationary.
To do this, at the selected place you need to dig a metal pin.
The bottom of the bottle is cut off. Then the bottle is “put on” on a metal pin with a neck and goes a little deeper into the ground. The finished flowerpot can be decorated as desired and covered with soil.
From pipes
The original idea is to use plastic and metal pipes for making flowers.
Pipes can be installed vertically. In this case, only the upper part of them is used for planting. If you install several pipes nearby, different in height and diameter, you get an interesting composition.
You can install pipes horizontally by making holes for plants on the surface.
Such original flower pots look beautiful along paths, lawns, along the perimeter of houses and greenhouses.
Finish options
For large outdoor flowerpots, you can choose an original decor that will be the finishing touch to their design.
The easiest way is to paint the product with paint. You can use one shade for all made flower girls, or you can create a multi-colored composition of all the colors of the rainbow. The main thing is that the planted plants are in harmony in color with the painted container.
For sites with houses in old styles, artificially aged flower girls are suitable. To do this, they are covered with the selected paint, and a layer of craquelure is applied on top.
To keep the paint for a long time, the surface must first be coated with a primer.
Another way to design an outdoor flowerpot is to decorate it with various materials at hand. Decor can be created from cones, branches, small stones or pebbles, broken tiles, mirrors or colored glass, creating a mosaic effect. This requires only special glue.
If it spills or stains the surface, it must be removed immediately, otherwise it will be impossible to do it later after solidification.
After that, the flowerpot must be allowed to dry. If tiles, glass or stones are used as decor, the surface can be additionally treated with grout to complete the work. In addition to natural stones, you can use artificial ones, which will be perfectly matched in size and look more aesthetically pleasing than natural ones.
How to arrange a summer cottage?
When choosing containers for flowers as a decor for your site, you should first of all evaluate their safety for people. For example, the commonly used tires from car tires- not the safest option. They can release toxic substances into the air and be dangerous, especially if there are small children in the family.
In addition to safety, the flowerpot must meet the requirements for appearance: match the size and style of the site.
Its size should harmoniously fit into the space. In addition, if the house and the entire plot are decorated in a certain style, the flowerpots should correspond to it.
Not all plants are suitable for planting them in outdoor pots. To decorate the site with flower arrangements, it is worth considering the features of their root system, watering and the need for sunlight.
The following plants are suitable for planting in flower beds:
- Petunia. These are easy-care flowers in a variety of colors that bloom all summer.
- Pansies. Their flowering continues for a long time. They are unpretentious, differ in various colors and varieties, grow low, but fluffy.

- Fuchsia. Due to its cascading appearance, it creates the impression of being in a blooming, fragrant garden.

Varieties of flowerpots
- Indoor
Indoor flowerpots are divided into portable and standard, with simple and complex shapes. The material of manufacture can be the most diverse: polymer concrete, natural and fake diamond, wood.
- street
Outdoor flowerpots are much larger than indoor ones, and they are located only on the street. They can be made both from plastic - more economical material, and from polymer concrete - a more expensive option.
- Decorative
Such flowerpots are especially relevant in those places where literally every centimeter of the plot counts. Very often, such flowerpots can be found in urban small courtyards.
- For registration of entrance groups
This type is the most common, can be placed on poles, pedestals or just on the ground.
The shape and dimensions of flowerpots
Outdoor flowerpots should be in harmony with the overall style of the suburban area. In some cases, the geometric shapes of flowerpots will look more concise, and in some cases specimens with unusual, extravagant notes will do. It should not be forgotten that in large areas, small flowerpots look ridiculous, and, conversely, large ones will not fit into the landscape of a small area. At the expense of the coloring of street flowerpots, one basic rule plays here - the pot should not be brighter than the plants in it. Also, do not pay special attention to various shades, monotony will best emphasize the style of the entire site.
In vase landscape fashion, the main colors are brown, grey, terracotta and white.
Wooden flowerpot from a stump and sawn trees
The stump is not at all an unnecessary dead tree, but on the contrary, it can become a precious landscape potential, a container for flowers. How to transform a stump into a beautiful flowerpot? To do this, you will need a chisel and a drill.
- Initially, holes must be drilled on the surface of the stump, and the closer they are to each other, the easier it will be for you to process the tree further.
- After that, using a chisel, carefully remove the inner wood. Carry out this procedure until the depth of your future flowerpot reaches the required parameters. The dimensions of the flowerpot depend on the strength and dimensions of the stump itself, and the more rotten the wood, the thicker the walls should be.
- Everything, on this the process of creating a wooden flowerpot is completed, it remains only to fill in the ground.
Highly interesting option flowerpots are obtained from sawn trees, and especially from birch. It is not worth planting plants directly in the flowerpot itself, since the wood is susceptible to moisture, and with frequent watering, the tree will simply simply begin to rot. It is better to put a pot inside the cut wooden branch. It is advisable to treat the tree with a special protective agent in case water gets past the pot while watering the flowers.
Vases from old things
For the organization of street flowerpots, any old things are suitable, ranging from various jugs, buckets, ending with old shoes and beer bottles.
- Any old plate is a potential option for organizing flowerpots. To do this, you just need to hold the plate over the heating device and when the material heats up, it will become plastic, after which it can be given any shape. In this way, you can create real masterpieces, the main thing here is to be very careful and not get burned.
Suitable for decoration broken glass, various small pebbles, shells, nail polishes. This version of flowerpots is a pure flight of fancy, the most difficult thing here is correct selection and arrangement of decorative elements. The easiest and safest way is to finish with colored glass, which is attached with tile adhesive.
- Stuffed bowls, mugs, jugs will perfectly cope with the task of landscape decoration of the site. If your old dishes are made of clay, then you can stylize absolutely any part of the site by lining up a flower arrangement.
You can always dream up and combine unnecessary dishes with old furniture. For example, a beautifully painted and decorated pot can be placed on chairs or a cabinet, which will serve as an excellent basis for a flower garden.
- You can organize a small flower bed using a table from an old sewing machine and a plywood box.
To do this, we separate the legs from the machine, carefully wash and wipe the box dry. We fasten the box between the legs, after which we paint the entire surface with a spray gun. Initially, apply a black base, then take a silver or golden paint and casually with a brush, barely touching the table, make horizontal strokes. The result is a beautiful antique flowerpot.
Plastic flower vases
Variants of flowerpots from plastic bottle mass, but this option is not for everybody.
The easiest way is to cut a two-liter bottle, and on the back side, make several holes for water to drain, some spray paint, shells and your flowerpot is ready.
A twenty-liter bottle can become a completely full-fledged outdoor flowerpot, but it requires a more serious approach. To make the pot as stable as possible, it will have to be made stationary.
- In the place of the proposed placement of the flowerpot, dig a piece of reinforcement.
- Cut the bottom of the bottle so that the height of the sides adjacent to it is about 20 cm. This will be the lower part of the future flowerpot, covering the "technical solution" with fittings.
- In the bottom, you need to drill a hole the size of a bottle neck.
- Then this entire surface must be painted with waterproof paint.
- After the paint has completely dried, you can assemble the structure: we put the neck on the dug-in fittings, and we string the “skirt” from the bottom onto the neck.
- Now you can start backfilling the earth and planting plants.
Outdoor flowerpot made of tires
A flowerpot from a tire is a quick, free and at the same time original way to create flowerpots that emphasize the beauty of the plants planted in them. To create it, you need a little imagination, half an hour of free time, a pencil for marking and a knife or a jigsaw. The size of the selected tire can be the most diverse, it all depends on the desired dimensions of the flowerpot.
- Tire marking. The cut is made with a knife along the border between soft and thicker rubber. Inside the tire there is a metal cord, which will serve as a natural border, to which cuts should be made. An ornament should be applied around the entire tire, along which the rubber will be cut.
- Making cuts. They should be made with a well-sharpened knife or a jigsaw, the depth of the cuts can vary from 5 to 10 cm. The width of the cut ornament should be at least 10 cm, since in the future it will act as a decorative element of the flowerpot.
- Reversing cuts. After you have made the cuts, you should turn them inside out. For this, the force must be applied from the center of the product and at an angle of 25 degrees. Turn out a third of the incised part, then the work will go easily.
- Decoration. The tire turned inside out now looks like a real flowerpot, it remains only to transform it by adding small elements and painting it in the desired color. The incised areas can be shaped into triangles, ovals, or rectangles.
- Soil filling. Before filling the ground, agrotextile material should be laid on the bottom of the flowerpot, which will prevent the germination of weeds and ensure water drainage.
Concrete flowerpots
To organize a concrete flowerpot you will need:
- two dishes of different sizes;
- cement;
- water;
- vegetable oil;
- spray.
Depending on the desired size of flowerpots, take a large container of the same dimensions. With the help of a smaller dish, you will make the concrete walls of your flowerpot.
Steps to create a concrete flower pot:
- The first thing to do is to treat the inner side of the large and the outer surface of the smaller container with vegetable oil.
- After that, take a small plastic tube and make four identical pieces about 5 cm long from it, which will be used for drainage.
- You also need to take care of the cement mortar, but if you plan to make a colored vase, then it's time to add dye to the mixture. Mortar ratios: two parts cement, three parts sand and water.
- After all preparatory work you can proceed to the direct organization of an outdoor concrete flowerpot for flowers. To do this, initially fill a large container with cement mortar, the layer of which should be approximately equal to 2 centimeters.
- Then insert 4 tubes and wait for the solution to set.
- Then lower the small container into a large container, which should cover the tubes. Carefully fill the gap between the larger and smaller containers with the remaining solution.
- After about a day, when the cement mortar hardens, slowly remove the inner vessel, and sprinkle the cement with water. In a large container, our future flowerpot should be kept for about a week, while wrapping the entire structure with a film and regularly moistening with water.
- After seven days, the pot can be carefully knocked out of the mold. Our flowerpot is ready, it remains only to fill it with earth and plant the plants.
Capsho vases for flowers
Kapsho differs from the usual flowerpot in the absence of drainage, an unusually designed surface and mainly perform decorative functions. As a rule, a flower pot is placed in the capsho container itself, but in some cases it is possible to plant plants directly in it, then in this case it is necessary to ensure good drainage.
The size of the capsho should be 3-5 centimeters higher and 5-8 centimeters wider than the plant pot. You can make a capsho yourself by buying an ordinary container and decorate it with pebbles, ribbons, beads, dried flowers, artificial flowers or other decorative elements, but a capsho made entirely by yourself will look much more original and harmonious. Also, building baguettes are perfect as a decoration, which, when slightly wet, will adapt to any shape of the flowerpot. It is enough just to stick a baguette on the prepared bowl and coat the surface with clay. Completely processed with this material, the flowerpot will look like real modeling.
For example, you can take old shoes, tin can or waste bucket, paint them and decorate with decorative elements.
Kapsho made of bamboo sticks look very nice, they must be carefully wound together and pasted over with burlap from the inside, and a small bow can be attached on top.
From the point of view of comfort for flowers, the most optimal capsho material is ordinary clay, gypsum or asbestos.
- We take an ordinary vessel of the required dimensions and wrap it with a gauze bandage, pre-soaked in gypsum or asbestos, which have the consistency of sour cream. The wall thickness of the capsho should be at least two centimeters.
- After the flowerpot is completely dry (after about 12 hours), the capsho should be carefully cleaned with sandpaper to a smooth surface.
- Then you can start decorating, for example, show your imagination and apply some kind of drawing with acrylic paint, after which you definitely need to cover the plane with acrylic varnish.
Flowers for outdoor flowerpots
Most often, plants of two or three types are planted in small flowerpots.
Dimorphotheques, gazani, dwarf ursinia look very nice, which are distinguished by unusual and bright inflorescences. All these flowers are grown as annuals, with the exception of the dimorphoteca, which is transplanted into a room with good lighting for the winter.
In large flowerpots, compositions are made up, including flowers of various heights, shapes and colors.
If the flowerpot is viewed from all sides, then more than tall plants, and around are surrounded by flowers half the size. Asters, dahlias, pelargoniums, marigolds, pansies, verbena, iberis and snapdragons look very impressive in large flowerpots.
Falling flowers are planted in flowerpots placed on hills - lobelia, begonia, petunia, bell, thunbergia and fuchsia. For outdoor flowerpots, you can choose a huge number of colors, but if you want it classic version, then opt for petunias, balsam, lubelia, dichondra, budre, etc.
